From Representation to Discovery of Geographic Dynamics in GIS Databases
Fri, October 10, 2003 from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm Admission: Free Doheny Memorial Library (DML) University Park Campus As part of the USC geography department public lecture series, University of Oklahoma geography professor May Yuan presents a GIS representation framework to meet the challenge of query support on geographic intelligence. The representation is based on hierarchy theory developed by ecologists to examine processes across spatial and temporal scales. Hierarchy theory provides working principles to examine dynamics in a complex system. These principles suggest not only how to observe and analyze a complex system but also how to interpret organizational structures and mechanisms in space and time. The proposed GIS representation framework organizes geospatial data according to hierarchy theory principles to detect geographic dynamics embedded in geospatial data that are acquired routinely through sensor networks.
