Programs School Administrators Article SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS ARTICLE Parents On Board: Persuading Parents to Join the Team Most administrators recognize the need to get parents involved in school activities, but often efforts to draw them into the educational equation yield disappointing results. Education World writer Cara Bafile tracked down some educators who have worked hard to win over parents. Included: Strategies for Parent Days, parent teams, more! "We began Parent Day last year," Jan Jewell told Education World, "to provide another avenue for middle school parents to remain involved at school." On that day, parents “shadow” their children as they move through a typical school day. "It is hard to tell whether the day is more enjoyable for the parents or the students!" said Jewell, a special education teacher at Cheyenne Middle School in Edmond, Oklahoma. "The students enjoy having their parents at school, and it's really an enriching time for parents to be able to see what a typical day is like for their child."

The Unschooling Handbook : How to Use the Whole World As Your Child's Classroom
by Mary Griffith
Unschooling, a homeschooling method based on the belief that kids learn best when allowed to pursue their natural curiosities and interests, is practiced by 10 to 15 percent of the estimated 1.5 million homeschoolers in the United States.
Oklahoma Homeschooling Welcome to A to Z Home's Cool Oklahoma Homeschool page. Oklahoma is the only state in the U.S. where the right to homeschool is provided for in its constitution. This makes homeschooling in Oklahoma very easy and unregulated. Although school officials occasionally sends out notices requiring notification, this is not the law and is not recommended. All you are required to do is keep track of 180 days of school, teach the basics (reading, writing, math, science, citizenship, U.S. constitution, health, safety, physical education, conservation), and enjoy! One of several good contacts about homeschooling in Oklahoma is Cindy Downes at

Buck Central District Director Wisconsin Cooperative Extension Stevens Point, Wisconsin Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service has been involved in parent education through home visitation since the mid-1980s. Initially this program used volunteers. In 1991, an Extension Service/U. S. Department of Agriculture Youth-at- Risk grant enabled one county to employ trained home visitors. Oklahoma Child Abuse Prevention funding, instituted in 1991 through the Oklahoma Department of Health, enabled Oklahoma State University to employ home visitors in additional counties. In 1992, Healthy Families Oklahoma evolved through a statewide collaboration initiated by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service and the Oklahoma Committee to Prevent Child Abuse. At the national level, the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse and the Cooperative Extension Service submitted a proposal to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to develop pilot programs around the country using the Healthy Families America model. Pottawatomie County was selected in 1994 as one of the three national pilot sites funded. Additional grants, available in 1996 from federal Family Preservation and Support and Office of Child Abuse, expanded the Healthy Families program. Currently, Oklahoma State University operates Healthy Families programs in ten counties. There are a total of nineteen Healthy Families programs statewide.
