CONTINUING EDUCATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
Several years ago (during a severe budget crisis) the College decided to discontinue Continuing Education as a separate department. Not only was the department a substantial drain on the College's finances, but the CE market was really overbooked. The College, the Oklahoma Dental Association, the Oklahoma Dental Foundation, local and district dental societies, dental laboratories, and dental supply companies were all sponsoring courses. While our CE department was disbanded, we have continued to offer a variety of courses sponsored by the Robertson Society and individual academic departments. We have also continued the Faculty Lecture Series and our association with the Oklahoma Dental Foundation and its courses. Ms. Vicki Coury is currently our Coordinator of Continuing Education. She can be reached at University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, Department of Dental Hygiene, P.O. Box 26901, Oklahoma City, OK 73190, telephone (405) 271-4435.
Faculty Lecture Series
The Faculty Lecture Series program offers one to two hour evening presentations by faculty for local dental societies and study clubs. Arrangements for FLS presentations should be made through Dr. Frank Miranda, Associate Dean or Dr. Stephen Young, Dean. You may contact either of these people at (405) 271-5444. Honorariums for FLS presentations are in the form of contributions to the J. Dean Robertson Society. $150 to $200 has been the norm. Direct payments to presenters are not expected. Either Dr. Young or Dr. Miranda will usually accompany the faculty member to the presentation.

"This settlement reaffirms the principle that public schools cannot require students to check their faith at the schoolhouse door."
Assistant Attorney General R. Alexander Acosta
(AP) A sixth-grade Muslim girl in Oklahoma can wear a head scarf to school under a settlement between the school district and the Justice Department, officials announced Wednesday.
The six-year agreement, filed in U.S. District Court in Oklahoma, also requires the Muskogee Public School District to change its dress code to allow exceptions for religious reasons.
"This settlement reaffirms the principle that public schools cannot require students to check their faith at the schoolhouse door," said R. Alexander Acosta, assistant attorney general for civil rights. The government filed suit in March on behalf of 11-year-old Nashala Hearn. She had been suspended twice by the district for wearing a head scarf, or hijab, to class. School officials said her clothing violated a dress code banning hats and other head coverings.

OKLAHOMA STATE LAW AFFECTING HOMESCHOOLS
The Oklahoma State Constitution is unique in that it includes a provision guaranteeing the right to homeschool. The framers specifically intended "other means of education" to include homeschooling and gave the state no authority to regulate it. Following are the portions of the constitution and statutes that affect home education:
Oklahoma Constitution, Article XIII, Section 4:
"The Legislature shall provide for the compulsory attendance at some public or other school, unless other means of education are provided, of all the children in the State who are sound in mind and body, between the ages of eight and sixteen years, for at least three months in each year."
70 Oklahoma Statute 1997, Sect. 10-105:
"A. It shall be unlawful for a parent, guardian, or other person having custody of a child who is over the age of five (5) years and under the age of eighteen (18) years, to neglect or refuse to cause or compel such child to attend and comply with the rules of some public, private, or other school, unless other means of education are provided for the full term the schools of the district are in session or the child is excused as provided in this section.
B. It shall be unlawful for any child who is over the age of sixteen (16) years and under the age of eighteen (18) years, and who has not finished four (4) years of high school work, to neglect or refuse to attend and comply with the rules of some public, private or other school, or receive an education by other means for the full term the schools of the district are in session."
