Special Staff for Special Kids
PSRPs play vital role in providing services to the students who need them the most At A ndrew J ohnson E lementary S chool in Oklahoma City, the principal sometimes takes applicants for jobs as special education paraprofessionals on a school tour. They usually stop in Terry Goforth's room, where the veteran paraprofessional works with disabled preschool kids. That's often the last time Goforth sees the job applicants. "Once they get a view of what's involved with the job and the pay," they decide they can't handle it, says Goforth, a member of the Oklahoma City Federation of Classified Employees. Of the six children in her roomstaffed by a teacher and two education assistantsonly one can walk on her own. The job applicants "are just not prepared for special education," Goforth says, adding that starting pay for some positions works out to less than $9,000 a year. Wilma Rose, a Colorado paraprofessional working as an occupational and physical therapist, knows exactly what Goforth is talking about. "It's hard to find someone who will stay with it because of the needs that are required," says Rose, a member of the Colorado Classified School Employees Association who works in Brighton, Colo. Some of the duties are "not fun," as she delicately puts it.

One of the major issues addressed by the legislation is the quality of teachers for children with special needs. IDEA ’97 requires students receiving special education services to be educated with their non-disabled peers to the “maximum extent practicable.” As a result, according to a 2001 report from the Study of Personnel Needs in Special Education, 75% of students receiving special education services spend 40% or more of their day in general education classrooms. Consequently, 96% of general education teachers currently teach, or have in the past taught, children with special needs.
Teacher Preparation and Certification
Special Education Training for General Education Teachers
How have states responded to the challenge to prepare general education teachers to meet the needs of students with special needs? According to ECS’ Teacher Preparation Policy Database (http://www.tqsource.org/prep/policy/), 46 states and the District of Columbia currently have statutes or regulations requiring teacher education programs to provide some instruction on teaching children with special needs to individuals seeking initial training in elementary or secondary education. The amount and content of this instruction, however, varies dramatically.

Assistive Technology (AT) Task Force
Abstract of the Executive Summary Report
Assistive Technology is Devices, Services, Strategies, and Practices which are designed to address problems faced by individuals with disabilities that can be utilized at school, work, home or in the community.
More simply put, technology makes things easier for people without disabilities; but for people with disabilities AT makes things possible. There can be multiple purposes and/or benefits derived from utilizing AT devices and services.
These include:
· Improvement or maintenance of one's functional ability,
· Prevention of secondary impairment or disabilities,
· Expansion of independent living,
· Reduction or possibly elimination of the need for caregivers,
· Facilitation of entrance into or return to work, school, or prior living situation,
· Provision of full access to, and participation in, the opportunities afforded the non-disabled citizens of Oklahoma, · The empowerment of disabled persons to compete with non-disabled persons within their capabilities. Consider this…
· Having technology and being able to use it has become a necessity of daily life.

The center thumb key is used in combination with the four finger keys to type "space" and "a" through "z". The two outer thumb keys are used for special keys like "Alt", "Shift" and cursor movement. "Sticky" or "latching" keys are used to enter multiple key sequences, i.e. Alt F to open a file.
