The Arts in Alternative Education
Part 2 - Who Ends Up In Alternative Education?
by Alice Lovelace

This article was delivered as a keynote speech at the 1998 Fall Conference: Expressive Arts in Alternative Education footnotes and references are available in a separate browser window - click on footnote numbers throughout text.
Who Ends Up In Alternative Education
Overwhelmingly alternative education students are black males, students with independent streaks, students with leadership qualities who often use these qualities for their own ends, and students who see themselves as possessing a multidimensional identity. The adventuresome, opinionated, assertive student who refuses to be pigeonholed. Many of these students have difficulties that include: behavior problems; adjustment difficulties, poor peer interaction, difficulty with authority figures, poor motivation, insecurity and a lack of self-confidence, talk too much or talk too little, are disruptive, destructive, aggressive, and many are chronically irritable/depressed/angry. Can you hear them in this poem (by Jhan Jackson): My Generation
My generation is confused.

Alternative Fuels Training
Alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) require proper maintenance, just as conventional vehicles do. It is important to have trained and competent AFV technicians to properly maintain and service AFVs. Technicians must understand the differences between various fuels and fuel systems, and have a good understanding of maintenance schedules and vehicle components. Here you will find information about AFV training providers and links to AFV training programs and courses.
Aftermarket Training Programs
OEM AFV Training
Most of the OEMs that sell AFVs offer technical training to their technicians who support their dealerships. Contact individual OEM training departments for more details. Links available to the public are provided below. General Motors Alternative Fuels Training
GM offers AFV service training for dealerships and fleet technicians.
Other AFV Training Resources
National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF)
For technicians not affiliated with the OEMs, aftermarket training is available for servicing AFVs. Some of the aftermarket AFV training providers have achieved certification of their programs or processes through the NATEF. NATEF evaluates technician training programs and providers against automotive industry standards and, if appropriate, recommends them for certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, commonly known as ASE. Alternative Method to Distribute Title I Funds
Ms. Carol Lingreen
Team Leader
Title I/School Support/Indian Education,
Oklahoma Department of Education 2500 North Lincoln Boulevard Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73105-4596 Dear Ms. Lingreen: We are approving your State's continued use of its current alternative method to distribute Title I, Part A Basic, Concentration, and Targeted Grant funds to local educational agencies (LEAs) with fewer than 20,000 total residents. Oklahoma's alternative method is based primarily on counts of children eligible for free lunch. We originally approved this method in 1999. The use of an alternative method is authorized in sections 1124(a)(2)(B), 1124A(a)(4)(A), and 1125(d) of the Title I statute. At this time, however, it is not clear whether you may use this alternative method to distribute Title I Education Finance Incentive Grants authorized in section 1125A of the statute. We may regulate in order to give States this flexibility. We hope to make a decision soon and will keep you informed.

The Center seeks to increase education and research in resolutions outside of the courtroom, with a special emphasis on cross-cultural and gender issues in dispute resolution. The Center holds a contract with the Oklahoma Supreme Court to operate its mediation program in central Oklahoma. How ADR Began Phyllis Bernard
Director Twenty-five years ago, the American Bar Association brought attention to the multi-door approach to client representation, and the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) movement was born.
