Education Moore Public Schools
The Moore Public Schools district is the fourth largest in the state with a student population of about 18,400. The district encompasses approximately 159 square miles and serves Moore and a portion of south Oklahoma City. The district comprises some 600 acres of property, and 2.3 million square feet of buildings. The district is founded upon strong student achievement, outstanding educators, involved parents, and an active business community. Children are cared for, nurtured and treasured, as well as informed, motivated and educated. The low teacher-to-student ratio of one-to-18 demonstrates this commitment. The professional staff of more than 1,250 certified teachers and administrators have an average of 13 years of experience, and more than 500 advanced degrees. The district includes two high schools (10-12), five junior high schools (7-9), and 20 elementary schools (K-6). There are specialized programs geared for students ranging from the academically gifted to high-challenge students, as well as an alternative school for those whose needs cannot be met in the traditional classroom setting. Students may participate in a wide variety of curricula and extracurricular activities which stress academic achievement and community service. Competitive athletics and activities offered in various grades include the academic bowl, band, golf, music, swimming, tennis, wrestling, basketball, cheerleading, football, track, baseball, cross country, gymnastics, soccer, softball, volleyball and pom pom.

School Board Bans Corporal Punishment
By John Perry The Oklahoma City school district became the first in the state to permanently retire the paddle Monday night, when board members voted to place an immediate ban on corporal punishment. School superintendent Arthur Steller said the ban on spankings will become effective as soon as the new policy can be distributed to principals "in a week or so." Board members voted 5-2 to approve the ban. Member Leo Hise and board president Betty Hills cast the two dissenting votes. The new policy states: "The board recognizes that corporal punishment is not an effective educational tool and its use shall not be permitted in any district school." Board member Thelma R. Parks said she was glad the issue was finally coming before the board for a vote. "I don't think I have to remind this board that I've been opposed to corporal punishment from day one," Parks said. Turning to Steller, Parks asked, "So all the pretty little paddles will disappear?"
