Success Stories: Alternative Education Yearly eval-uations of state alternative education pro-grams by the Oklahoma Technical Assistance Center shows that a carefully designed and implemented system continues to positively impact the at-risk student population in Oklahoma. In its seventh year of operation, the Statewide Alternative Academy program served 13,149 students during the 2002-2003 school year. Schools provide alternative education in a number of ways and each program is rated against 17 criteria established in Oklahoma law. Most Oklahoma schools are successfully providing an alternative program specifically designed to serve their students, from full-time academies in larger districts for more than 400 students to teachers working in once-abandoned buildings with up to 15 students. The National Dropout Prevention Network's Crystal Star Awards of Excellence in Dropout Recovery, Intervention, and Prevention have been bestowed on only 18 schools in the seven years of the program. Three Oklahoma alternative education programs have received this national award: Lincoln Alternative Education High School, Enid, 1997; Attucks Alternative Academy, Vinita, 2000; and Broken Bow Alternative Academy, Broken Bow, 2001.
