Setting Access Standards for High School Career/Technical Programs
West Virginia’s Policy In the fall of 2000, under the provisions of an equity law suit, a Vocational Offerings Committee addressed the programming, personnel, delivery and alignment issues associated with public secondary vocational-technical education in West Virginia. The committee proposed a program of study access recommendations that focus on local system capacity to serve a minimum percentage of high school students in vocational-technical offerings that have been approved by the state board and are in the public comment phase:
  • 30% of students in grades 11 through 12 be provided access to four units in a vocational- technical concentration and two technical electives; 30% of students in grades 11 through 12 be provided access to two units in a vocational- technical concentration; 80% of students in grades nine through 10 be provided access to at least one vocational-technical foundation unit; and schools should provide students access to skilled and entry-level preparation in a minimum of four of the following career clusters:
    • Health Business/marketing Science/natural resources Engineering/technical and adult education services Human services.

Athena Cinemas Company boosts area schools with grants to support arts programs ATHENS, Ohio (April 20, 2004) The Athena Cinemas Company recently made grants of $1,000 each to the six Athens County school districts to support their arts programs. "Since its renovation two years ago, the focus of the Athena Theater has been to best benefit residents of the Athens and regional community, and these grants continue that approach. The theater has been a successful enterprise, and it is our great pleasure to share this success with the area," said Michael Sostarich, vice president for Student Affairs at Ohio University and a member of The Athena Cinemas Company, which manages the theater. "We are pleased to receive this grant. Our programs can always use a little help," Athens City Schools Superintendent Carl Martin said. Alexander Local Schools Superintendent Robert Bray said, "This is a wonderful gift for our arts programs, and I'm sure it will be spent in a way that will be most beneficial to our students." Athens County school districts receiving the grants include Athens City Schools, Federal Hocking Local Schools, Tri County Vocational School, Alexander Local Schools, Nelsonville-York Schools and Trimble Local School District.

Career, technical classes arrive at high school Arts, communications courses offered through Joint Vocational School By BRIAN MILLER
Sentinel Reporter Some Granville High School students who want to leap ahead in arts- and communications-related fields will be able to do so, thanks to three new career and technical programs starting next year at their school. The three satellite programs of the Licking County Joint Vocational School will be in the theater arts, digital design, and TV production. During their junior and senior years, students would take a two-period block in one of those areas along with courses from the regular high school curriculum.

http://www.cga.state.ct.us/pri/archives/2000rvreportappenM.htm
APPENDIX M Vocational Education Options A recent U.S. Department of Education study of vocational education identified three common formats for high school vocational education: · comprehensive high schools, which offer a full range of academic and vocational education courses; · area vocational schools, which offer a range of occupational programs that students attend for a portion of the day; and · full-time vocational high schools, which provide academic and occupational programs. No up-to-date summary of information about the structure and graduate placement rates of secondary vocational schools in individual states appears to exist. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) compiles information about the number of vocational schools in each state as part of its annual report on elementary and secondary schools. Limited information about the entities operating the vocational schools is also available. Based on NCES data for school year 1998-99, Connecticut appeared to be the only state operating full-time vocational schools. In a majority of states, such schools were run by local school boards configured on a city/town, regional, or county basis. Fourteen states had no full-time vocational schools. In an effort to obtain specific data from as many states as possible, committee staff also posted a request for information on an internet CareerTech list service sponsored through the University of Ohio. Twenty-five individuals from 17 states responded. The information varied in scope, with some people able to provide quantitative answers and others suggesting potential resources.
