Mission Statement The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The mission is accomplished by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats; providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing and using information and ideas; and working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students. (Information Power, p. 1) This is the mission statement that I gave my administration when asked what is the purpose of the library. I needed this statement to show my administrators why the library is such an important part of the school. We as library media specialists are not people who just sit and check out books. Though we may not deal with students seven or eight periods a day, we do have many "chores" to do. When school started last year, I went in to visit my new principal. She told me that I was the third administrator of the school. I finally found someone who realized the work it takes to run a library media center. The administrative functions of the school library are often done behind-the-scenes but are essential to the operation of the library. The library must serve teachers and students to its fullest and it is your responsibility to make that happen. There are communities where the school library is the only library in town. Are you prepared to serve the community as well as the school?

School Librarian and Teacher Collaboration The instructional role of the school librarian (library media specialist, U.S.; teacher-librarian, Canada, Australia) has been expanding. One of the key components in this expansion is collaboration between the librarian and the teacher. Below are several online resources that discuss the evolution of the school librarian's role in the educational process followed by resources discussing related topics. This list of resources was initailly compiled for a February 25th, 2004 forum on librarian and teacher collaboration sponsored by the Education Library and the University of Virginia Chapter of the Student Virginia Education Association. Panelists included Edie Richards and Nancy Williams from Woodbrook Elementary School, Susan Guerrant and Katie Hill from J. T. Henley Middle School, and Lin Hill and Sandra McLaughlin from Western Albemarle High School. Carole C. Lohman, Reference Librarian UVa Education Library and Allison Gillen, SVEA Program Chair moderated the forum.

A groundbreaking in August 2003 signaled the start of construction of the new Massillon Middle School. The new 5-8 middle school will replace two middle schools that are 77-years-old. According the Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC) the two schools are beyond the point of cost effective renovation. The design of the school is curriculum driven and uses the “grade house” concept for instruction. The aim is to break down the scale of the 1,400-student facility, allowing teachers and students to work in small, familiar groups. Each “grade house” will have three pods that will have rooms for the core subjects (science with labs, math, social studies and language arts) to allow for team teaching. The grade houses are stacked in two wings with the fifth and sixth graders housed in one wing and the seventh and eight graders housed in the other wing. The wing design will allow the school administrators to focus on the parallel development needs of the fifth and sixth graders and the seventh and eighth graders. The wings will be connected with common/shared areas including fine arts spaces, a media center, a gymnasium and an auditeria. The configuration of the common spaces and wings is designed to provide the shortest travel distances for the lower grades, which are adjusting to movement between classes and longer travel for the upper grades as a transition to the greater time responsibilities of high school. This aspect of the design also addressed community concerns of the fifth graders moving into the new middle school.
