Staff Writer
The $1.2 million program, coined "Small Steps, Big Strides for Healthy Ohioans, Healthy Communities," has three main educational goals: nutrition, physical activity and tobacco prevention and reduction, said Mari-jean Siehl, spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Health. The health department designed the healthy steps program. The program stresses small steps and personal achievement, not goals that few people can achieve, Siehl said. "Anyone we reach that starts to take that first step is a success story," Siehl said. "They don’t have to ditch their current unhealthy lifestyle all at once, which can be a daunting task." A local health official said the program lacks new health information, but the marketing could be beneficial. Chuck Hammer, administrator of the Athens County Health Department, said the goal is good for Athens. "The single largest cause of illness and death in Athens are cardiovascular problems, because so many other health problems stem from that," he said. "And this is something that is absolutely under control of the people."
