Study: Ohio teen health habits improve
May 3, 2004 COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio's teenagers exercise, wear seat belts and avoid drugs, alcohol, tobacco and sex more often than their counterparts five years ago, according to a new study. ADVERTISEMENT In fact, the Ohio Department of Health study released last week indicates that almost all of the health habits of Ohio teens have improved during the past five years. "Ohio's teenagers understand healthy behaviors are important," department director J. Nick Baird said. "This bodes well for Ohio's future, as we often carry learned behaviors into adulthood." The study, conduct last year of about 1,200 high school students, found: 68 percent of Ohio teens reported that they exercise regularly, up from 62 percent in 1999, the last time the statewide survey was conducted. 76 percent reported having tried alcohol, down from 85 percent in 1999. 90 percent said they didn't drink and drive in the month before the survey. Tobacco use fell 45 percent to 22.2 percent.

Hunger in Ohio: Making Ends Meet How can nutrition programs help low-income families make ends meet? Even working families can have a very difficult time meeting all of their expenses, such as rent, utilities, and food. Because food is a variable expense, many low-income families spend less on groceries in order to pay for these other costs. Whether they purchase low-cost foods that lack nutrition or cut back on meals to save money, such behavior is dangerous for the health and well-being of all members of the family, especially children. But federal nutrition programs can help low-income families purchase the food they need to keep themselves healthy and nourished. Consider the following example: The Anderson Family
By accessing these federal nutrition programs, the Andersons are able to raise their income above the poverty level. Although they still struggle, these programs help ensure that they have enough nutritious food to eat.

The Wayne County Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (W.I.C.) is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Ohio Department of Health. The primary goal is to improve maternal and child nutrition and ultimately health status by providing not only supplemental foods (milk, eggs, cheese, infant formula, etc.), but also nutrition education. The Program provides nutrition education for pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five years of age. The Federal program provides grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children who are found to be at nutritional risk. Valerie A. Ubbes, PhD, CHES Position Associate Professor Scholarly and Professional Focus: My scholarship focuses on the professional preparation of teachers within health education, especially the ways in which health education has ties with other academic disciplines in education (preK-16). To date, health education has had only implicit ties to the education literature, borrowing mostly from the behavioral science literatures of psychology and sociology, and to a lesser extent, the historical roots of medicine. My primary interest is the relationship between education and health which explicitly connects health education to the field of public education rather than a more typical focus on public health. Although I am interested in how both public education and public health inform the discipline of health education, my developing work in educational renewal involves critical reflection and interpretation on how to frame these issues for future teachers, including teacher educators. The following are the foci of my research, teaching, and service: (1) How constructivism theory supports teachers to understand and think critically about their ongoing decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment, including the triadic effect of these factors on all participants in the teaching-learning process;

The goal of the Elderly Nutrition Program is to provide nutritionally balanced meals to those who are 60 years of age or older. With the high cost of utilities, prescriptions, and medical needs while on a fixed income, senior citizens sometimes face the agonizing choice of either paying the necessary living items or purchasing food. When many seniors are already at an increased health risk, nutrition is of the utmost concern to help reduce colds and illnesses. The meals furnished through the Elderly Nutrition Program provide one-third the daily recommended nutritional requirements. The Elderly Nutrition Program offers a variety of meal or nutrition programs to fit everyone’s lifestyle. Be realistic and make a meal choice that fits your lifestyle! Senior Dining Sites Senior Dining Sites are a place for seniors to go to socialize, meet new friends, join in fun activities, learn interesting facts, and receive a hot meal. Most dining sites are located in senior centers, senior housing facilities, churches, temples, or other community buildings.

Families, not social service agencies, nursing homes or government programs, are the main providers of long-term care for older persons in northwestern Ohio. The National Family Caregiver Support Program, implemented as a part of the Older Americans Act of 2000 recognizes the monumental role caregivers play in caring for older family members. Under this program five basic services are available: information to caregivers about available services; assistance to caregivers in gaining access to services; counseling, support groups, and caregiver training; respite care to enable caregivers to be temporarily relieved from their caregiving responsibilities; and supplemental services, to complement the care provided by family caregivers.

Help is available to certain low-income residents of Ohio who cannot afford to buy health insurance. Medicaid, Healthy Start, and Healthy Families offer free or subsidized health insurance coverage, direct medical services or other help. This chapter provides summary information about these programs and contact information for further assistance.
Medicaid
Medicaid is a program that provides health coverage to some low-income Ohio residents. Medicaid covers families with children and pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities, if state and federal guidelines are met. Those who qualify for Medicaid programs must be Ohio residents and U.S. citizens. Additionally, certain legal residents who are not U.S. citizens may be eligible for coverage. Non-citizens who do not have immigration documents cannot enroll in Medicaid programs. For all categories of Medicaid, eligibility is based on the amount of your household income. For children with family incomes over 150% of the federal poverty level, eligibility is restricted to uninsured children who have not had health insurance for at least 6 months. For those who are applying for coverage because they are elderly or have a disability, eligibility is also based on the amount of assets an individual may have. Assets are things like cash, savings, stocks and bonds, etc. Contact your local county department of job and family services for more information.

CommunityAction Agencies were first incorporated with the advent of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. They are locally controlled private nonprofit organizations whose purpose is to reduce poverty and to help low-income people become self-sufficient. There are over 900 community action agencies in the United States. Currently, there are fifty-two (52) CAA's in Ohio, with every county receiving services. During the last program year, they administered $523,407,248 of resources aimed at alleviating the problems of poverty in Ohio's Communities. Nationally, Ohio ranks second in the amount of resources developed by its community action network. The following chart illustrates the 2002 funding base of Ohio's CAA's.
Over the last thirty years, the CAA network has developed a broad base of programs and services. The chart below includes many, but not all, of the available services. These were compiled from reports required by the Community Services Block Grant.
