CHAPTER 5
THE MANUFACTURING CORE
M anufacturing is an important economic activity in the United States. The evidence of this is everywherein articles of clothing, items of preserved food, residential structures, means of transport and communication, and many other things. In spite of the presence of items manufactured outside the country, domestic industry remains paramount, and it is rare for any medium-sized U.S. town to be without at least some local employment in manufacturing. The northeastern United States, excluding northern New England, is the country's single most significant region of manufacturing ( Map 4 : 45K). This region is loosely defined on three sides by the Ohio River Valley, Megalopolis, and the southern Great Lakes. The western margin of the region is less clear; it blends gradually with agriculture-dominant landscapes across southern Indiana, Illinois, and beyond. In spite of the region's moderate extent and the growth of manufacturing elsewhere, the Manufacturing Core continues to be of tremendous economic significance in American geography. Its factories produce most of the country's steel, as well as a significant percentage of its motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Most of the important ports, the main centers of communication, and the primary financial centers are within or near the region, and the country's political capital is on the immediate margins.

MCPS Status of Book as of 4/4/96
Approved as Library Book for Grades K-5
Title Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson with illustrations by James Ransome (Alfred A. Knopf, New York, NY, 1993) Lesson Developed by Patricia King Robeson Literature Annotation : This story is based on a true, little-known chapter in African American history. As a seamstress in the Big House, Clara knows she's better off than the slaves who work the fields. But slavery has separated Clara from her mother, and she can never be happy without her. Clara dreams that they will be reunited one day and run away together - north to freedom. Then Clara hears two slaves talking about how they could find the Underground Railroad if only they had a map. In a flash of inspiration, she sees how to use the cloth in her scrap bag to sew a map of the land - a freedom quilt - that no master will ever suspect is a map to freedom. Grade Level Duration : 3 to 4 class periods; this lesson could be used to introduce other lessons or discussions on migration and the different reasons people have for moving.

Ohio County Student Wins State Geographic Bee Posted: April 06th, 2001
Paul Volpe, an eighth grader at St. Michael Parish School in Ohio County, today became West Virginia’s 2001 State Geographic Bee champion.
Paul has now earned the right to compete in the National Geographic Bee, which will be held May 22-23 in Washington, D.C. He won by correctly answering “Marseille” to the question, “Which French city serves as a major seaport and oil refining center for petroleum from the Middle East?”
The 101 West Virginia competitors earned their place in the State Geographic Bee by winning local Geography Bees and then earned a top score on a written exam prepared by the National Geographic Society. Second place winner was Christopher Fields from Roane County; third place honors went to John McHaffie from Cabell County. The 2001 State Geographic Bee was held at the Charleston Civic Center.
“These students have demonstrated a remarkable knowledge of geography that will prepare them for a successful future,” said State Superintendent Dr. David Stewart. “Students across West Virginia recognize the importance of geography in everyday life and its significance in competing in a global society.”
Students in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories competed today to earn an all-expenses-paid trip with a teacher escort to Washington, D.C. In addition to the trip, each state winner receives $100 and other prizes. The national competitors will be vying for a $25,000 first-place scholarship, second and third place finalists will receive $15,000 and $10,000 scholarships, respectively.
