Home IMPACT OF THE CANAL ERA ON INDIANA GEOGRAPHY
George Washington felt that canals offered the young nation the best hope of linking its regions into a united country. Although he never traveled to Indiana, he was a surveyor and always had a keen interest in geography and canals. He was the first to suggest that a canal might be built to connect the waters of the St. Lawrence via the Great Lakes with those of the Mississippi river. The connective passage for this link was a seven mile area between the Maumee river and the Little river at Fort Wayne. This historic "Glorious Gate" was used by Native Americans and the early French voyagers. In southeastern Indiana the Whitewater river, which flows into the Ohio near Cincinnati, also offered a natural route for taking goods to market. The problem there was the "white water." The rapids in the river made it largely unnavigable to commercial boat traffic. Canals offered the answer to a cheap, reliable transportation system and were built to open the Indiana frontier. With pick and shovel the natural geography could be modified to provide a manmade waterway that would be accessible almost year round. Canals allowed boats to go more than one direction. Goods could flow to eastern markets via Lake Erie and the Erie Canal of New York. Manufactured goods could be brought back to the growing state. Compared with railroads, canals could be built with native materials and the cash expended locally instead of flowing to outside interests or even out of the country. In the case of railroads, both the steam engines and the rails had to be imported.

Thursday, April 24, 2003 Ohio Moments State's geography, history reflected in flag
On April 24, 1902, John Eisenmann - creator of Ohio's flag - transferred his patent to the state. The General Assembly made it the official state flag May 9. Ohio had no flag until 1901, when Eisenmann, architect of the Ohio Building at the Pan-American Exposition, made the flag that flew over the building. Ohio's flag is distinctive because of its swallow-tail design (called a burgee) and is the only pennant-shaped state flag. Eisenmann said the triangles formed by the main lines of the flag represent Ohio's hills and valleys. The stripes symbolize roads and waterways. And the stars, grouped around a circle (which represents the Northwest Territory), indicate the 13 original states. Four additional stars indicate Ohio's position as the 17th state to join the Union. The white circle with the red center also represents the initial letter of Ohio and is suggestive of it being the Buckeye State. Rebecca Goodman

Ohio - Geography Midwestern state in the Great Lakes region of the United States. It is bordered by Pennsylvania (NE) West Virginia (SE), Kentucky (S), Indiana (W), and Michigan and Lake Erie (N). From the dunes on Lake Erie to the gorge-cut plateau along the Ohio River, from which Ohio takes its name, the land is fairly flat, with some pleasant rolling country and in the southeast small rugged hills leading to the mountains of West Virginia. Before the coming of settlers to the state, it was covered with miles of virgin forest, but today only vestiges of the trees that helped to build the many cities remain.
Columbus is the capital and largest city. Cleveland is the center of the state's largest metropolitan area. Other major cities are Cincinnati, Toledo, and Akron.

Ohio County Student Wins Geography Championship Posted: April 11th, 2000
Benjamin Bateson, an eighth grader at Warwood Middle School in Ohio County, today became West Virginia’s 2000 State Geographic Bee champion.
Benjamin now goes on to compete in the National Geographic Bee, which is May 23-24 in Washington, D.C. Benjamin won by correctly answering “Carpathian Mountains” to the question, “The source of the Dniester River is in southwestern Ukraine in what mountain system?”
The 100 West Virginia competitors earned their place in the State Geographic Bee by winning local Geography Bees and then earned a top score on a written exam prepared by the National Geographic Society. Second place winner was Ian Hicks from Hancock County; and third place honors went to Joseph Chambers from Raleigh County. The State Geographic Bee was held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Charleston.
“These students have demonstrated a remarkable knowledge of geography that will prepare them for a successful future,” said State Superintendent Dr. David Stewart. “Students
across West Virginia recognize the importance of geography in everyday life and its significance in competing in a global society.”
