The Ohio Geographic Alliance
The Ohio Geographic Alliance is part of the system of state alliances established by the National Geographic Society after the 1984 "Nation At Risk" report revealed a need to revitalize K-12 geography instruction. The Ohio Geographic Alliance is housed at the Mershon Center for Strategic Issues at The Ohio States University. Dr. W. Randy Smith has served as the coordinator of OGA since its inception. There are several classroom teachers serving as "senior Teacher Consultants", and a number of geography professionals from universities throughout the state working together to:
  • develop workshops and training institutes for Ohio teachers

GREAT LAKES WATTER MATTERS COORDINATOR'S COLUMN I know it is Winter because several "snowdays" have already been used. But I must admit that for me, as a Canadian, every winter day was a snow day so I cannot quite relate to a concept that apparently means "no school". Anyway this aspect of Ohio's physical geography will not stop the Alliance from its work. The Fall was busy. With Geography Awareness Week and several major in-service programs, mainly in Northwestern Ohio, Alliance teachers were very active. The Winter is the same. We are now planning our 1996 Summer Institutes. Elsewhere in this Newsletter you will see announcements for regional activities in the months ahead. Please consider participating. Here at Ohio State we will offer an advanced institute (June23-28) on the Geography of Ohio, open to those teachers who have participated in a previous institute on geography here in Columbus. Planning is also in the final stages for this year's Ohio Geography Bee, March 29,1996, organized by Teacher Consultant Patricia Bosh and hosted by Mifflin International Middle School in Columbus. In the months ahead you will see the Alliance becoming more heavily involved in two additional activities: helping teachers, in various formats, with implementation of the new Model Curriculum for the Social Studies; and taking steps toward pre-service work, interacting with colleges of education and the next generation of teachers. We are excited by the prospects of this work and if the Alliance can be of help to you, your school, or your district, please contact the Alliance office (614-292-1681) and let us know.

It borders Pennsylvania on the east, Michigan to the north, Indiana to the west, Kentucky on the south, and West Virginia on the southeast. Much of Ohio features glaciated plains, with an exceptionally flat area in the northwest being known as the Black Swamp. This glaciated region in the northwest and central state is bordered to the east and southeast first by a belt known as the glaciated Allegheny Plateau, and then by another belt known as the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau. Most of Ohio is of low relief, but the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau features rugged hills and forests. Significant rivers within the state include the Miami River, Scioto River, Cuyahoga River, and Muskingum River.

Not only do Sandusky and Cuyahoga Falls have no airports, but even if they did, it would take less than two hours to drive there. By flying from Sandusky to Columbus to Cuyahoga Falls, you probably have made about a four hour trip out of what would be normally about two. Also, in the end when Tommy mentions that the whole town is at stake, there is no mention of Cedar Point at all. Now it may be just me, but I think a multi-million dollar amusement park would sustain a city more than an auto parts factory. 3 of 3 people found this comment helpful. Did you?
