Organizations Supporting Staff Development:
Many of the United States provide some form of intermediate service centers to support educators who are working on state reform initiatives. In Illinois these are called Regional Offices of Education. In Michigan these are called Intermediate School Districts. In that case, ISDs have boundaries that overlap regular school districts and have their own taxing authority. In New York and Colorado these agencies are called BOCES which stands for Board of Cooperative Educational Services. Texas has 20 Education Service Center Regions. If you don't know how to access assistance from these agencies, click here to link to the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) which can connect you to the state board of education in your state. You should be able to find out there if such agencies are in your state. The only USA exception is Hawaii which has one school district for the entire state and so, the state provides the assistance directly.
In some countries, like Canada, the assistance for school improvement comes from provincial "ministries" of education. In other countries, like Singapore and Great Britain, the Ministry of Education is for the whole nation.

Looking for ways to make sure everybody is present and interested? Education World's "Principal Files" team has some ideas for you! Staff meetings can be the most important and productive professional development opportunities of the school year; on the other hand, they can be the most dreaded and squandered time a teacher will spend. So, what makes the difference between wonderful and wasteful meetings? That's the question we posed to Education World's Principal Files team . We asked team members to tell us about their best-ever staff meetings. According to Ed World's P-Files team, successful staff meetings are a function of the purpose, the planning, and the pace of those meetings.

SOUTH-WESTERN CITY SCHOOLS CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT PLAN A Work in Progress
July 2002
Continuous Improvement Plan Review
Executive Summary
The South-Western City School's Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) was reviewed by a district advisory team made up of representatives of the Board of Education, SWEA, OAPSE, SWAA, and program directors/coordinators. The purpose of this review team was to collect the data necessary to evaluate the goals, strategies, or lack thereof, toward achieving the performance indicators. Members of the review team were assigned to each of the tasks enumerated in the CIP based upon their interest and area of responsibility. The members of the review team determined that there was no need to change the overall goals and strategies of the CIP. Graduation, attendance, proficiency, and fiscal responsibility remain at the forefront of everything we do and continue to represent the focus of our efforts. A tremendous amount of data was collected to support the fact that we are making progress in achievement of our performance indicators in most areas. Changes were suggested in those areas where the data indicates we need to shift our focus slightly, develop new tasks because the previous ones had been achieved, or we need to refine our performance indicator to make it more measurable. The review team did suggest several revisions in the CIP tasks. These changes can be summarized thusly:

Setzer LOCAL IMPACT STATEMENT REQUIRED: No — No local cost
CONTENTS Estab lishes the Ohio Regional Education Delivery System
State Fiscal Highlights
There is no direct fiscal effect on the state. The bill requires the State Board of Education to establish the Ohio Regional Education Delivery System (OREDS) by July 1, 2007. With the exception of educational service centers, most other existing regional service providers and state funds they receive will be transferred into OREDS. The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) expects that OREDS will operate initially on the existing revenue streams. Current regional service providers received a total of $206.7 million in state funds in FY 2003. Over time, ODE believes that the efficiency and effectiveness of the new system may result in a potential decrease of expenditures.
Local Fiscal Highlights
There is no direct fiscal effect on school districts.
