Autism Resources in Ohio
Currently, there are several initiatives happening in relation to children with autism who live in Ohio. These initiatives include the availability of the Autism Scholarship Program, the efforts of the Ohio Autism Taskforce, and the possibility of the creation of an Autism Waiver. More information about these initiatives, as well as links to information from other organizations, is provided below.
Autism Scholarship Program
Ohio's Autism Scholarship Program, a Pilot Project Special Education Scholarship Program of the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) through House Bill 95, provides parents of a qualified child identified as having autism with the choice of sending their child to a special education program, other than the one operated by the resident school district, to receive the services outlined in the child's individualized education program (IEP). The program allows ODE to pay a scholarship to a parent of each qualified child with autism. The scholarship amount is the lesser of the fee charged by the provider or $15,000 per fiscal year. Refer to Ohio's Autism Scholarship Program for more information.

CHASER specializes in children born with congenital heart defects (CHD), "in utero to adult", and also acquired heart disease in infants and children. The primary purpose of the organization is to offer parents, professionals and patients, resources that may help these individuals in their dealings with financial, educational, medical, emotional and other issues that may concern them. CHASER is in essence working to fill a void which exists for many. CHASER collects information nationwide from a variety of clearinghouses, organizations, professionals, and the family. CHASER itself can be a clearinghouse of information for all. From heart defects to syndromes accompanied by heart disorders - from feeding to surgery and beyond - CHASER strives toward finding and linking the family to the "help". The organization maintains the national 'heart' parent/child database of families with congenital heart disease. By using information furnished by families and professional in various fields, they in turn are able to provide parents the opportunity to connect with others who truly understand their concerns and fears - CHASER's Parent to Parent Networking. They employ some of the most precise "matching" capabilities for CHD families found anywhere. Close similarities in condition and experience are considered a prerequisite to "understanding". While at the same time, "new" parents can find not only understanding, but resources and coping skills as well. Isolation and loneliness can be lessened or alleviated by CHASER's networking. They primarily work on a "One-to-One" basis when locating helpful information or contacts, with each case looked upon as being unique.

Helping At-Risk Youth Make the
School-to-Work Transition. ERIC Digest ERIC Identifier: ED321158
Publication Date: 1990-00-00
Author: Lowry, Cheryl Meredith
Source: ERIC Clearinghouse on Adult Career and Vocational Education Columbus OH. The changing demographics of the U.S. work force mean that programs and services to help youth make a successful transition from school to work will be increasingly needed throughout this decade. Such services are necessary if women, minorities, and immigrants are to make up the predicted 80 percent of new workers by the year 2000, and if the United States is to be successful in an increasingly competitive world marketplace. This ERIC DIGEST is based on Feichtner (1989), a synthesis of research on school-to-work transition. The digest describes transition services and the youth who need them, lists programmatic barriers to effective delivery of services, describes models for service delivery, and discusses successful practices. Services and At-Risk Youth School-to-work transition services are intended to help youth develop the skills and attitudes they need to find and keep employment, to obtain and maintain a meaningful adult life-style, and to develop positive social interactions. The most accepted outcome measure of success for transition service programs is the eventual employment of the at-risk youth. A wide array of services may be necessary, including legal help, housing services, health care, financial aid, employment assistance, career guidance, basic skills education, occupational training, language assistance, transportation, and child care.
