Ohio
The State Board of Education approved the Statewide Plan for Technology, which was developed by a broad-based advisory committee, in November 1992. The plan describes the goals and objectives for three areas: Administration/Management, Instruction, and Professional Development. Committees are working to develop action plans for each objective to include the steps for implementation, the responsible person or organization, the timeline, and the cost, if known. These action plans will be taken to the State Board this summer. Other actions will be taken this summer to implement a report from the governor's office that will bring together the users, providers, and state department staff who are most involved in technology. The Ohio Education Computer Network forms the infrastructure of the Department of Education's electronic connection to the school districts and other agencies. The network uses the microwave system of the state of Ohio as well as advanced telecommunication links to connect to more than 3,000 school buildings in Ohio. The Department of Education depends upon this network for the transmission of much of the data necessary to fulfill statutory requirements of the districts. This strategic data includes financial, staff, and student elements. The recently installed Education Management Information System relies solely on the infrastructure of the network.

US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states. Some states provide comprehensive information about residency requirements, loan, grant, scholarship and prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs. Others provide minimal information. We recommend visiting the sites for both your state of residence and for the states of the colleges to which you are applying. A B C D ...

About Ohio Project WET
OWEP is the state sponsor for National Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) in Ohio. Project WET is a national program that is grounded in the belief that informed people are more likely to participate in the decision making process and to make a difference through their actions. Project WET believes that the development of a water ethic should begin at an early age and that children benefit from parents, educators and mentors who recognize not only the scientific but also the social and cultural aspects of water. The core of the program is the Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide. The guide, for kindergarten through twelfth grades, is a collection of water-related activities that are hands-on, easy to use, and fun! The 90+ activities incorporate a variety of formats, such as large and small group learning, whole-body activities, laboratory investigations, discussion of local and global topics and involvement in community service projects. Supplementary resources are available which complement and enrich many of the activities. Project WET's curriculum is based upon sound educational theories. The framework of this curriculum contains the following elements:

NCADD/Northwest Ohio is an affiliate of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. , a national organization that was organized in 1944 as the National Council on Alcoholism to reduce the stigma of the disease of alcoholism and to advocate for proper treatment and recovery of addicted persons and their families. In the 1980's it expanded its coverage to include dependency and abuse of all addicting substances. NCADD/Northwest Ohio was organized in 1995 to educate the public about alcohol abuse, alcoholism, other drug abuse and addiction, and to advocate for appropriate treatment for those individuals and families suffering from the adverse effects of the disease of addictions. While our primary services are to the ten counties of northwest Ohio, we will respond to the needs of the residents of southeast Michigan.

TOPS in JFS Liaisons FROM: China Widener, Assistant Director
Robert Blair, Assistant Director
Melissa DeLisio, Assistant Director MEMO: AD 2003-06 SUBJECT:TUITION REIMBURSEMENT The June 25, 2003, JFS Memo AD 2003-04, addressed a suspension of Training Opportunities for Program Staff in Job and Family Services (TOPS in JFS) enrollments. The suspension was necessary to review TOPS in JFS cost allocation methodologies to assure compliance with federal program guidelines. As noted, an ODJFS workgroup convened to review TOPS in JFS issues. The workgroup's findings follow. Your feedback regarding the tuition reimbursement policy will be considered during the JFS Clearance process; however, the change in funding methodology is final. TOPS IN JFS BACKGROUND TOPS in JFS began in September 1989, in response to a Federal Food Stamp Audit that addressed a need for DHS to offer job-related training to promote consistency in the application of state/federal policy, statewide. The initial TOPS in JFS program operated as an inter-agency agreement between the Ohio Department of Human Services (DHS) and the Ohio Board of Regents (BOR); Hocking Technical College was contracted to develop curriculum and a training program for income maintenance, child support workers, and their supervisors. The development of job-related core courses met the DHS' federal mandate to offer job-related training. In 1995, BOR ended their involvement with TOPS in JFS and DHS continued the program via contractual agreements with educational institutions. Throughout the 1990s, TOPS in JFS expanded to include college/university-level courses and degree program approvals.
