RIVER EXPLORER EDUCATION PROGRAM
River Explorer is Ohio River Foundation's education program. River Explorer is designed to help children and adults learn about the ecology and importance of the Ohio River. Activities cover a wide variety of river and watershed topics and are designed to meet state education standards. Utilizing a variety of hands-on experiences, River Explorer allows participants to learn about the river through interactive discovery. LAND BASED RIVER BASED
Land Based
Where possible, River Explorer activities take place on the banks of the Ohio River. If necessitated by weather conditions, or other factors, the program can travel to schools or other indoor locations. However, our experience is that the program is more impactful and learning is more interesting and lasting when "brought to life" at the waters edge. River Explorer Land Programs are customized based on the age and interests of the participants. Generally, program participants rotate through several modules so they can learn about different topics. Areas of learning include:
  • Freshwater Mussels
  • Fish species
  • Plankton
  • River Chemistry
  • Pollution, Conservation, etc.

Through the Council of Great Lakes Governors, the region is now setting the pace in the global marketplace and protecting the world's largest single source of fresh water. STATE CONTEXT FOR CHANGE OHIO Governor Voinovich has established a Human Resources Advisory Council to guide state policy on workforce development issues. As an initial charge to the Council, it developed and published Windows of Opportunity, an inventory of Ohio's workforce development programs. This document identified $981 million in related workforce development funds that currently are channeled to at least 15 agencies, 31 workforce preparation programs, and 20 supplemental programs. The result is a complicated web of job training services, funding streams, eligibility requirements and performance standards. The Council is committed to developing a clear strategic focus from this confusing web. Most recently, in response to JTPA amendments, the Governor's Human Resources Advisory Council is developing a recommendation to the Governor for the transition to an "investment" council. The proposal will focus on streamlining the advisory process by expanding the Council's scope and role, and combining planning and oversight for multiple human resource programs. Three separate, but complementary, state policy frameworks have been completed which reflect the broad vision and scope of change in Ohio and the need to use a collaborative and comprehensive approach for addressing the issues:
