Dresden: Sister City About Dresden ] [ Additional Information Board of Directors Exchanges ... Contact Mission Statement: The mission of the Dresden Sister City Program is to foster an international understanding at all levels of the community on a continuing long-term basis. To achieve this understanding, both cities will promote the exchange of people, ideas, economic development, and culture through a variety of educational institutions, municipal, corporate, professional, technical, and youth projects. The focus of these exchanges will be to foster world peace. About Dresden: Location : Dresden is the capital city of the Saxony region, located in eastern Germany. It is 19 miles north of the Czech border and 100 miles south of Berlin. History : First settlements in the area took place during the 6th century, and the origin of the city of Dresden dates back to the early 13th century. Though struck by the Black Death (1349-1350) and a devastating fire (1491), Dresden became famous for its baroque architecture built during the 1700s. Unfortunately, much of it was destroyed during allied airstrikes (February 1945) as well as postwar efforts to build a socialist metropolitan area. After the cold war, renewed interest in rebuilding its historic center has restored much of Dresden's original beauty, exemplified by the restoration of the Frauenkirche.

Being 'College Town' Would Give Northeast Ohio Competitive Edge May 17, 2004 8:26 a.m.
CLEVELAND The Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education has begun work on a multi-year work force development project to enroll more students in northeast Ohio colleges and universities, engage them in the life of the community while they are here, and graduate them into the regional work force.
"Recent research shows that cities can grow wealthier without necessarily growing bigger. Austin, Boston and San Diego are examples of that," says Charles Hickman, council executive director. "The way they do it is by growing their student population, fostering strong connections to the larger off- campus community among those students during their period of study, and cultivating employment opportunities for an educated work force."
A recent study by CEOs for Cities, a national organization dedicated to advancing cities' economic competitiveness, identified higher education as the leading predictor of economic growth in American cities in the 1990s. The study found that for each two percent growth in the proportion of college graduates a region has, and keeps, that region enjoys one percent in income growth.
"There is no reason why we should be training the work force of other states," Hickman says. "We need to do a better job of explaining that northeast Ohio is an education hub of significant proportion making it a center of innovation, creativity, energy, vibrancy and youth."

Research News Study Ties Economic Woes to Murder Rates in Some Small Cities

Contact: Rick Matthews, (740) 593-1367, matthewr@ohio.edu , or Michael Maume, (740) 593-1374, maume@ohio.edu ATHENS, Ohio – Homicide cases in small to mid-size cities in the nation's Rust Belt rose in the 1980s and 1990s, according to a new study of 85 industrial cities in t he Midwest and Northeast. The findings point to economic decline as one reason for the rising murder rates and suggest that reports citing a drop in the national crime rate may not tell the full story. "You cannot celebrate the success of the nation as a whole and these major cities, while in their shadow there is so much crime and despair," said Rick Matthews, a criminologist at Ohio University who reported the findings in this month's issue of the journal Homicide Studies. "Policy ma kers must be cognizant that many places are being left behind in the ‘new economy.'"

Abraham Lincoln once wrote that " The legitimate objective of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done but cannot do so well for themselves in their separate and individual capacities ." This statement truly reflects the core business of city government. Leadership can be defined as influencing the future direction of the Kent community by establishing a framework for action by undertaking the small tasks that produce greater results. Many of the activities taken by the City of Kent during 2001 have built a solid foundation to achieve notable outcomes in the years ahead. The dozen or so issues highlighted in this year's "State of the City" message focus on these fundamental building blocks which will contribute to the prosperity of Kent in the future. The underlining theme is to view every challenge as an opportunity to navigate the Kent community toward a brighter destination.
Destination 2006
In May of 2001, the City of Kent completed a five-year strategic planning process to identify the top priority issues confronting the community with the intent of allocating resources to address these critically important challenges. A diverse group of city residents was convened to serve as a steering committee for the purpose of guiding this process, including input from citizens. Committee members studied earlier planning efforts and conducted a series of public forums to solicit participation in discussing the future of the Kent community. The steering committee then studied the information gathered from these public meetings as well as data collected from a questionnaire. Six common themes emerged from these deliberations:

City Council Passes Emergency Cat Ordinance Deadly To Felines. Boycott State of Ohio
To Whom It May Concern:
The following letter accurately expresses my views regarding this issue. I am writing to inform you that my family and I will boycott the State
of Ohio as long as the "Cats At Large" ordinance passed in Akron remains
in effect. We have chosen to boycott your state for the following
reasons:
1) We are upset to learn that homeless stray/feral/lost cats and kittens
are being rounded up and killed within hours of being caught, despite a
mandatory 5 day waiting period. We have been informed that cats and kittens are immediately killed for having fleas and/or ringworm, both very common conditions for any cat who has been outdoors for even a short period of time. [Source: http://www.newsnet5.com/ The cost to cure fleas and ringworm is significantly less than the cost of killing an otherwise healthy cat. This waste of taxpayer dollars and unnecessary

Thank you, Jody for that kind introduction. Appearing before the Roundtable for the fourth time presents certain challenges. I am keenly aware that many of you have been here 4 times before. It's a little like being Elizabeth Taylor's 4th husband ... I know what to do, but how do I make this interesting? I am also aware that this is the second time you have arranged your schedule to be here. Thanks to all of you. I'm deeply appreciative to you, Jody, and to the Akron Roundtable for your willingness to accommodate my recent illness. Those of you, who know me, understand that the principal effect of having two extra weeks was to place 14 more days of pressure on me to create an even more interesting presentation about the past, the present, and the future of Akron. Much was made of the turning of the clock this past New Year's Day. We had a pretty good celebration in downtown Akron. Watching the fireworks at Canal Park wasn't like Times Square...but on the other hand, we could all be home 15 minutes after our party ended. There are great advantages to living...and having fun...in Akron.

Founded in 1870, The Ohio State University is recognized as one of America's distinguished research universities. With more than 2,600 full-time faculty, more than 45,000 students on its Columbus campus, and a curriculum of 10,500 courses, Ohio State offers a learning environment few universities can match. The Ohio State University
At Ohio State, diversity and individual differences are recognized and valued. Equality of opportunity is a basic commitment. University policy, both traditionally and currently, is that discrimination against any individual for reasons of race, color, creed, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, handicap, or Vietnam-era veteran status is specifically prohibited. Columbus, Ohio
Columbus is the home to Ohio State's main campus. As the state's capital and largest city, Columbus is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the nation, with a population of about 1.4 million. Columbus is primarily a service-industry community, although there is some light manufacturing. The city is a national center for research and development and is home to an international airport served by most major airlines. As Ohio's capital city, Columbus' ties to government, business, and industry provide career and research opportunities for Ohio State students and their spouses.
