Polish Studies at Ohio State University
Overview
The Institution
One of the largest universities in America enrolling almost 50,000 students. Few universities can match our breadth of academic offerings and related interdisciplinary opportunities, including 176 undergraduate majors, instructional areas, 220 graduate f ields of study, and professional programs. It views itself as a student-centered research university that consistently ranks among the top national public universities for undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs.
Center for Slavic and East European Studies
Founded in 1965 as a United States Department of Education-funded (Title VI) Comprehensive National Resource Center based at Ohio State University, the Center promotes East European area and language studies at the University. It develops new courses and funds existing classes, sponsors lectures, administers an East European studies M.A. program, supervises exchange programs with foreign universities, provides monies for library acquisitions, awards fellowships to graduate students, and maintains a large video library. The State Climatology Office for Ohio
The State Climatology Office for Ohio strives to acquire, archive, process and disseminate all climate and weather information that is of value to public officials and organizations, corporations, research scientists, and private citizens of the state. The fact that there is a state climatology office is not widely known around Ohio and many of the requests are either from central Ohio or they are from other states, from persons that know of climate services in their home state. People come to this website because they are interested in finding Ohio climate data. The following web links will hopefully help you find such information. Many have free information but invariably the detailed and specific data needs that most people have will be available for a fee. Climate data is increasingly only available at cost, so appreciate the free sites listed in the second group.
    Major Climate Data Repositories
    • National Climatic Data Center . A wide variety of data can be purchased from the NCDC. It is the ONLY source for climate data admissible in court for legal cases. One of the most often requested forms of surface climate data available is:
Daily Local Climatological Data since 1996 for over 300 stations nationally and containing temperature, humidity, wind speed, cloud cover and significant weather data, both daily and for certain periods of the day. Other types of data are also available from the same Local Climatological Data web link.

Executive Summary
Yet, this shift occurred precisely as cities were losing political clout in state legislatures due to population decline within city limits and rampant growth in suburban jurisdictions. Overall, the authors find:
  • Cities' dependence on state government has increased as the federal government has ceded more power to the states. As cities' populations have declined, they have become weaker in state legislatures that have grown more powerful due to federal policy. In the peak year of 1978, about 15 percent of city revenues came from the federal government. By 1999 that had decreased to 3 percent. Concurrently, the federal government has shifted a number of programs to the states, which control the rules and revenue mechanisms cities operate under. Traditional political coalitions cities have used to achieve their state legislative goals are no longer as effective.

Columbus, Ohio, USA Technical University Dresden, Germany SYLLABUS Introduction Readings Dresden Part of Course Columbus Part of Course INTRODUCTION The course emphasizes housing issues, especially residential land use and development. Examining the process in a non-American context facilitates the understanding of that process. Seminar Focus Class readings and discussion will revolve around several questions:
  • Is the Americanization of German cities actually happening? What patterns do we see that support this idea? First, we need to define and identify the American pattern, with emphasis on spatial distributions and potential conflicts. Columbus will be our local laboratory, but the patterns are visible in most American metropolitan areas. Do we see these patterns in Germany-specifically in Dresden? What processes led to these patterns? Are they similar or different in the two places? How do they function in each place? What are the social and economic outcomes? What conflicts arise?

Ohio – A State Unit Study This mini unit on OHIO uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study OHIO. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child’s needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about OHIO and enjoyable for all who are participating. Ohio’s State Flag Ohio's state flag was adopted in 1902. The Ohio burgee, as the swallowtail design is properly called, was designed by John Eisemann. The large blue triangle represents Ohio's hills and valleys, and the stripes represent roads and waterways. The 13 stars grouped about the circle represent the original states of the union; the 4 stars added to the peak of the triangle symbolize that Ohio was the 17th state admitted to the union. The white circle with its red center not only represents the "O" in Ohio, but also suggests Ohio's famous nickname, "The Buckeye State." Create a State “Infodesk”: Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect.

Cleveland is located in northeastern Ohio in Cuyahoga County and serves as the county seat. It lies on the southern shore of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River , extending 14 miles along the lakeshore. The town was named for Moses Cleaveland, a surveyor for the Connecticut Land Company who chose this site for the capital of the Western Reserve. In 1831, the name was changed to Cleveland by a newspaper editor to more easily fit into a headline. Development accelerated with the completion of the Ohio Canal, connecting Lake Erie with the Ohio River Today, the city's population is about a half million people. But smaller and medium sized cities that link to the Internet through these major hub cities could be disconnected from the entire network.

Decentralizing Federal Employment: Feasibility and Impact on Ohio Cities [Posted June 26, 2003]
    [HOME]
Introduction The events of September 11, 2001 and the subsequent War on Terrorism may have prompted a rethinking of the federal government’s role and function. The attack on the Pentagon, in particular, demonstrated the vulnerable nature of many federal jobs and facilities. These events reinforced already strong trends in reorganizing and streamlining the federal workforce. For example, under “reinventing government” in the 1990s the Clinton Administration cut 115,000 federal positions. This trend should continue under Pres. George W. Bush who, under his Management Agenda, could subject almost 850,000 federal jobs to competitive bidding. In addition, the federal government is facing a human capital crisis, with more than 50 percent of the federal workforce eligible to retire by 2004. This report examines the feasibility of one innovative approach to these personnel challenges: moving non-policymaking federal employment from Washington, D.C. to other areas in the United States. Several diverse cities and metropolitan areas in Ohio were used as case studies to demonstrate that possibilities for geographic dispersal. Rethinking Federal Workforce Management Workforce issues are among any organization’s most important and vexing management challenges. This is particularly true for employers such as the federal government that are primarily service providers whose responsibilities include managing contracts and implementing programs.
