Vestal’s Gap Road, long used by American Indians, opened to colonists after 1722 when the Iroquois signed a treaty that opened the Piedmont of northern Virginia to European settlement. From the 1720s through the 1820s, Vestal’s Gap Road served as a principal overland route from northern Virginia through the Blue Ridge Mountains at Vestal’s Gap to Ohio and points westward. Planters traveled the road to transport tobacco to the port at Alexandria. Vestal's Gap Road When the Leesburg Turnpike was completed in 1825, the road was superceded as a major thoroughfare. Vestal’s Gap Road also served as a byway for troops in the French and Indian War. His father, Edward, who emigrated to America from Wales in 1795, was the first settler in the Welsh settlement of paddy's Run, the present town of Shandon. Having built a two-story log cabin on land purchased on the Dry Fork of the Whitewater in 1801, he went east to Philadelphia and returned with his bride, a widow, the former Margaret Roberts Owens. William, the first of their three children, who was born on December 8, 1802, is said to have been the first white child born in Butler County west of the Great Miami river. Before he was old enough to attend school, William received instruction in both English and Welsh from his mother. Probably from the age of seven or eight he received several months' schooling each year in the district school. One of his later teachers was David Lloyd, a well educated Welshman. When about twenty young Bebb began teaching. Accounts differ as to his first school, but they agree that he taught for a time at North Bend, the home of William Henry Harrison. At all events, he was married in 1824 to Sarah Shuck, who was also a teacher there. In 1826 the Paddy's Run school was organized under the new state law, a new building was erected, and William Bebb was employed as the first teacher. Two years later Bebb and his wife opened a boarding school in a frame building erected for the purpose on the farm of Edward Bebb. The "Sycamore Grove School" was successful from the start, having from thirty to fourty boys between ten and fourteen years old from Cincinnati and the South and a few local day pupils. One writer claims that Bebb's methods were similar to modern educational procedures. A number of his pupils became prominent. They included a later governor, William Dennison, and several eminent attorneys.

As word spread around the community of the choice, those close to MCI expressed delight with the selection. After 18 years on the job, current Head of School Douglas Cummings resigned effective June 30, 2004. Szadkowski will take over July 1. Michael Hodgins, MCI board of trustees chairman, said more than 50 people inquired about the head of school position and there were 30 applicants. Five finalists visited the campus, and the decision came down to Szadkowski and Frank Hackett, superintendent of the Bangor schools. In a prepared statement released by the school Sunday, Szadkowski said, "I have never felt so instantly connected to a school and its people as I have at MCI. I felt as though I had known these people before - their warmth, sincerity and generosity of spirit made it so easy to share their dreams for MCI. Everyone, students, staff, faculty, administrators, parents, alumni/ae, board members, community members, and friends of the school were so genuinely concerned and invested in this process that I couldn't help but become excited at the possibilities for this wonderful school.

It is a dramatic change in lifestyles for Yvette Ingabire, who at one point hid for several months in a forest during the war. "I lost more family members than you can imagine," she said through Jennifer Lane, the French teacher who was Ms. Ingabire's translator for her first couple of months at the Andrews School. In a 100-day massacre in 1994, militants from the majority Hutu ethnic group killed more than 500,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The genocide ended when Tutsi rebels captured Kigali, the capital and formed a government of national unity. Ms. Ingabire, her parents, two brothers and 10 other people were the only survivors in her village of Nyamirambo after the war, school officials said. Ms. Ingabire will not discuss her family's ethnicity. She arrived at Andrews in September with one suitcase. The school in Willoughby costs $26,000 a year and features a full equestrian program with stables and event arenas.

Such a contrast - Southside's 852 instances of corporal punishment to Batesville's 80 - is a perfect illustration of the contrasting philosophies on the application of the "board of education" to the "seat of learning" in Arkansas, which leads the nation in school spankings according to a national report. While most area schools reported more paddlings being given to junior high students than older and younger pupils, Batesville Junior High gave no paddlings in 1996-97 according to Department of Education figures and has almost never paddled for the past several years, principal Harry Crossett said.
