Lawsuit may destroy Hare Krishna, official says
Columbus Dispatch/June 14, 2000
George Myers Jr.
A spokesman denied the latest allegations that Krishna children were abused in the sect's community boarding schools.
One day after a $400 million child-abuse lawsuit was filed against the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, the group's U.S. spokesman said the case could destroy the Hare Krishna movement worldwide.
"The size of the lawsuit is larger than the combined assets of all the Krishna temples and communities throughout the world,'' Anuttama, a spokesman for the society's national offices in Washington, D.C., said yesterday.
Windle Turley, a Texas attorney who filed the federal case Monday in Dallas, said yesterday, "If they have to sell off a few temples to make payment to the children whose lives they've totally destroyed, that's appropriate.'' Turley said "several dozen'' more abuse victims from around the country contacted his office after learning about the suit.
Anuttama expressed pain that many of the Krishna children were abused in the sect's community boarding schools, called gurukulas, in the 1970s and '80s. But the latest allegations are "exaggerated and grossly false,'' he said. A temple cat purring yesterday at the quiet Krishna House at 379 W. 8th Ave. belied the international turmoil that could shut down the temple and its 20-year-old community food pantry.

Growing Up Plain
Wilmer Cooper
Excerpt from Chapter 3: "Growing Up Plain" in Growing Up Plain: The Journey of a Public Friend by Wilmer Cooper, Friends United Press, 1999. As a young boy growing up in a Conservative Friends home and community, I had a clear feeling of the greatness and goodness of God. As I look back on this, it is something of a surprise to me-especially since I chose to break away from that community and its expectations at a fairly young age. Nevertheless, this was the view of the created universe that I experienced. We did go through some very hard times, especially during the Great Depression-1929 and most of the 1930s. But even though I knew of bad things that happened in the larger world, and sometimes in our community, it never occurred to me to ask, "Why do bad things happen to good people?"-the theme of Harold S. Kushner's small book (1981) on the problem of good and evil and how to reconcile that with a good and loving God. As a boy, it just seemed to me that the world as looked at from the earth with the blue sky and the sun and moon and stars above constituted a friendly and supportive life here in this vast universe. For this I was, and continue to be, thankful, even though I have learned since that the natural world, as well as the world of people, can be much more unfriendly, violent and destructive than I was able to comprehend then.

75. History - Sisters Of Notre Dame De Namur
of Notre Dame de Namur came to Cincinnati, ohio from Namur they opened their first school with three divisions boarding, day and free (poor) schools.
http://www.sndohio.org/history/history.htm
HISTORY OF THE OHIO PROVINCE Eight pioneer Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur came to Cincinnati, Ohio from Namur, Belgium in 1840 at the invitation of Bishop John Purcell. Eager to bring the service of education to the "untutored Indians," they were somewhat disappointed to find Cincinnati quite civilized. Upon their arrival on October 31, 1840, Bishop Purcell offered them a beautiful and extensive property some miles from the city. They refused politely, stating that they would never find the poor outside the city. Within a few weeks, the Sisters were able to procure property at Sixth and Sycamore Streets, in the heart of Cincinnati. In January they opened their first school with three divisions: boarding, day and free (poor) schools. During this period the parish schools were beginning in America. These schools were to be the basis of the future works of the Congregation. By 1848 nine parishes in Cincinnati each had its own small school. A priest-friend of Bishop Purcell visited the Sisters of Notre Dame, a few years after their arrival, and was very impressed by their educational methods. He invited them to Boston in 1849 to establish a school for young girls in his poor parish because "no one speaks for girls." It was obvious to Father John McElroy, SJ, that the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur would fulfill his hope. In 1914 the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur extended their educational mission to include the teaching of boys. Sisters became known as outstanding "boy teachers" in the days when boys and girls were taught separately in school.

http://nm.essortment.com/drelizabethbl_rzud.htm
Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell: first woman medical doctor
Profile of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, a British immigrant, who became the first woman to receive a degree from a medical school in 1849.
Elizabeth Blackwell was born on February 3, 1821 near Bristol, England. Her parents were Samuel and Hannah Blackwell, who were wealthy owners of a sugar refinery. Elizabeth was educated at home because her family did not belong to the Church of England, which controlled the schools. When the familys sugar refining business burned down in 1832, the family moved to America. The family settled in New York City where Blackwells father became involved in the antislavery movement. After suffering financial losses in 1838, the family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Shortly after arriving in Ohio, Blackwells father died and her mother opened a boarding school to support the family. Blackwell taught at the school for four years. bodyOffer(23777) The turning point in Blackwells life came after a conversation she had with a friend who was dying of cancer. Her friend believed that women physicians would be better able to care for women patients. She encouraged Elizabeth to study medicine. Elizabeth was at first reluctant, but because of her belief in the education of women, she decided to pursue a career in medicine. In her autobiography, she wrote, The idea of winning a doctors degree gradually assumed the aspect of a great moral struggle, and the moral fight possessed immense attraction for me. Blackwell taught in North and South Carolina schools to pay for medical school. She studied privately with male physicians and began to apply to medical schools in 1847. After being rejected by major medical schools, she was accepted by the Geneva Medical College in New York State. When Blackwell was first admitted to the College, she was not taken seriously. However, as a result of her intelligence and determination, she became one of the most admired students in her class. In 1849, she graduated and became the first woman medical doctor.
