The Office of Indian Education Programs is constantly seeking resources and funding to build the capacity of schools to support the technological needs in their remote areas. OIEP and its schools have long been a leader in educational technology.
The journey began in 1987 when OIEP established the first electronic bulletin board system in the United States devoted to American Indian schools. The Educational Native American Network (ENAN) bulletin board was used by principals, teachers and students who shared information, conducted research, and took online classes.
Along the way and with some bumps in the road, OIEP was able to reach its goal of having all schools able to access the information super highway in August, 2001. now connects all 185 schools to each other and the world over a high speed network using both satellite and T-1 technologies.
The work is far from over and has only just begun as OIEP works to provide the best possible technologies to support student academic achievement, to provide professional development for teaching staff, and to strengthen American Indian communities.
The OIEP has recently drafted a new Technology Plan that to guide its efforts in providing technology services over the next five years. The new

    Introduction
In this lesson students will learn about the cultural and social importance of dolls. They will view and discuss a variety of dolls from the Alexander Girard Collection at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico and then make a doll of their own out of scrap fabric, newspaper, yarn and other assorted materials. This lesson will teach students about the variety of dolls made around the world and the cultural values they convey. This is a thematic multidisciplinary lesson primarily addressing the areas of art, social studies and language arts.
The Big Question for this lesson is "What do dolls communicate about the cultures from which they come?" Student Outcomes
After completing a lesson on dolls around the world, students will understand:
  • How dolls represent the cultures from which they come.
  • That dolls are made of a variety of different materials.
  • Dolls help to teach children and adults about the society in which they live.
  • Dolls are used for different reasons and in a variety of ways, i.e. social, ceremonial, educational, decorative.

Abstract: This World Wide Web (WWW) site, maintained by the education department of the Smithsonian Institution, presents Web based lesson plans for grades 3 to 8 that offer activities in science. The lesson plans cover a variety of science topics, including the basics of mineral science, how things fly, and how plant and animal partners interact to accomplish pollination, as well as an interdisciplinary marine science in link with social studies. Each topic contains three to six lesson plans and activities, and Smithsonian resources including teaching aids, books and teaching guides, and electronic resources. Each lesson plan begins with background information, statement of learning objectives, and list of required materials. These are followed by sections on procedures, student handouts and worksheets, and a list of additional resources, including connections to the online version of the current or former Smithsonian exhibits on related topics.
