The Bren School's mission is to play a leading role in researching environmental issues, training research scientists and environmental management professionals, and identifying and solving environmental problems. In the past, the diverse disciplines addressing environmental issues have developed independently. Now, research and teaching have reached the point where significant progress requires weaving together elements of formerly disparate disciplines and blurring traditional boundaries. The School brings together a range of natural and social scientists to research important environmental questions. Moreover, because environmental issues arise in legal, political, and business contexts, the School's faculty also brings together law and business professors who provide perspectives from professional arenas. The Bren School continues to engage in a campaign of faculty recruitment and will appoint several new faculty members over the next couple of years.

Oceanography in the Coast Guard
The scientific study of the oceans has been a part of Coast Guard operations for more than a century. It began when the first Revenue Cutter Service vessels visited Alaska after the territory was purchased from Russia in 1867. They added oceanographic survey work to the long list of their other duties.
The survey began slowly the summer of 1881, when CAPT Calvin Hooper of the RCS Corwin planned a "regular connected series" of Arctic current measurements in the Bering Strait. This research program was curtailed by the pace of the Corwin's other operations. Hooper then placed a smallboat crew ashore on West Diomede Island to take the measurements. When "boisterous weather" stopped the operation, Hooper contented himself with random current measurements in the strait, marking the Coast Guard's first oceanographic data collection.
When these Arctic cruises became a regular annual mission, known as the Bering Sea Patrol, precise oceanographic data covering the lightly charted coastline served to ensure the safety of maritime navigation, trade, and the Revenue Cutter Service's mission to aid and protect the native population.

George Brown Goode and the Technological
Development of the Fisheries
by Brian Payne In July 1879 Spencer F. Baird of the United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries approached George Brown Goode with a daunting task. Goode was to coordinate with General Francis A. Walker, Superintendent of the Tenth Census, to produce an extensive investigation of the American fisheries, including methods of production, the distribution of the fishing grounds, and the natural history of useful marine animals. George Brown Goode had recently been appointed as the Assistant Director of the United States Natural Museum at the Smithsonian Institution. Goode assembled a team of more than two dozens investigators and over the course of the next eight years he edited and published five massive volumes of text and two volumes of plates. The result was a collection of over four thousand pages documenting the history and current status of the American fishing industry from Maine to Alaska.
The volumes of The Fisheries and Fishery Industry of the United States were released to the public and the members of Congress as they were produced between 1884 and 1887. The information provided within the pages of this document can be extremely profitable to the historians of North Atlantic fisheries.

Links SCIENTIFIC-TECHNOLOGICAL POLICY IN CANTABRIA REGIONAL STRATEGY FOR TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION IN CANTABRIA While remaining aware that the innovation picture is wider than regional and national boundaries, it is also the case that the regional level is particularly favourable for promoting public policies for support for innovation, because of the proximity of regional authorities, sensitive to local culture and business needs for innovation, and the ability to unite and coordinate the efforts of businesses, support organisations and the regional authority itself to define public activity aimed at promoting innovation, entirely in line with the actual situation in each area. It is for this reason that the Cantabrian Government was motivated through SODERCAN to develop a Cantabrian "Regional Innovation Strategies - RIS" study with European Commission support, followed by formulation of the Regional Strategy for Innovation on the basis of the analysis and conclusions of the RIS. The Cantabrian Government uses this to pursue its ultimate aim of creating and consolidating employment and sustainable economic growth by improving the innovative capacities of the business sector in Cantabria.
