Professors Courses No undergraduate major is offered in the department though most courses in the department are open to enrollment for qualified undergraduate students with the consent of the instructor. The UCSD Earth Sciences Undergraduate Program offers an earth sciences major leading to a B.S. or a combined B.S./M.S. degree. The interdisciplinary nature of research in marine and earth sciences is emphasized; students are encouraged to take courses from various UCSD departments, and to consider interdisciplinary research projects.
The Curricular Programs
Applied Ocean Science is a multidisciplinary program focused on the application of advanced technology to ocean exploration and observation. AOS students perform research in marine acoustics, optics, electromagnetics, geophysics, ecology, sediment transport, coastal processes, physical oceanography, and air-sea interaction. The emphasis is on the resolution of key scientific issues through novel technological development. The science focus of the Scripps AOS program is complemented by parallel Applied Ocean Science programs in both the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) departments. Students have access to professors, courses, and research facilities across all three departments.

The Development of Oceanographic Science, Technology and Education In recent years China has made further efforts to promote the investigation and exploration of marine resources and the marine environment, search actively for new exploitable resources, study new techniques and methods of marine resources exploitation and protection, train technical personnel in marine development and protection, and spread oceanographic knowledge among the general public in order to rouse the whole nation to protect the marine environment. On the basis of a multidisciplinary oceanographic research setup, which consists of 109 research institutes and 13,000-some research personnel, China has many achievements to its credit in oceanographic survey and research, studies in basic oceanographic science, development and protection of ocean resources, marine monitoring technologies and manufacturing of oceanographic technical equipment. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 a large amount of work has been done in the field of oceanographic surveys and research, which started in offshore areas with surface observation of the sea and later expanded to deep-sea regions by means of aerospace remote sensing and underwater detection, as well as surface observation. As early as in the period 1958-1960 a national comprehensive survey of China's offshore waters was made; later, from 1980 to 1986, a comprehensive survey of coastal zones and shoals resources was conducted nationwide, along with the launching of a number of pilot projects on the comprehensive development and utilization of coastal zones; and from 1988 to 1995 a general investigation of the country's island resources and an experiment on their comprehensive development were carried out.

The Institute is a leader, serving as a resource to museums, school districts, teachers, and others who seek to enhance and strengthen an educational program. The curriculum crosses all traditional disciplines, but draws heavily from history and the sciences using content derived from the ocean.'
  • The Ocean Project - 'We are a new initiative that intends to create in people a lasting, measurable, top-of-mind awareness of the importance, value, and sensitivity of the oceans. We believe that the single greatest impediment to healthy and productive marine and coastal areas is the public's low level of ocean awareness. Through unprecedented collaboration among aquariums, zoos, science, technology, and natural history museums, and other educational institutions that together serve more than 100 million visitors each year, The Ocean Project aims to significantly increase the success of ocean conservation. We will also collaborate with local, regional, and national nonprofit conservation and environmental organizations to actively involve people in conservation activities in their communities and better connect them to the oceans.'

Introduction of Chinese
Society for Oceanography
Established according to the law, the Chinese Society for Oceanography is a national professional association for marine scientists and technologists, and a component part of the Chinese Society for Science and Technology. The abbreviation of the "Chinese Society for Oceanography" is COS. Its secretariat is located in the State Oceanic Administration, P. R. China. The COS was ratified by the Chinese Society for Science and Technology on Jan. 17, 1979, and was established on July 31 in Dalian. 1. The historical track recorders of the CSO Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the marine scientific and technological cause have made considerable progress and the activities of the non-governmental academic exchanges have increased gradually. In 1975, in the name of CSO, the domestic marine scientists were organized to visit Japan and United Kingdom for scientific exchange for 4 times. Under the guide of the policy of "reform and opening to the outside world" since the Third Plenary Session of the 11 th Party Congress, the national marine scientific and technological research works and external exchanges have seen the prosperous situation. In order to meet the demand of such a new situation, Wang Dezhao, Zhao Jinsheng, Yan Kai, Ren Mei'e, Liu Enlan, Luo Yuru, Fang Zongxi, Chen Jiyu, He Endian, Li Faxi, Zhang Zhikui, Guo Jinghui, Cong Ziming and some other people from the State Oceanic Administration, the Academy of Sciences of China, Higher Educational Department, Waterpower Ministry, Geological Ministry, Aquatic Products Bureau and Navy sponsored to found CSO and the founding ceremony was held in Dalian on July 29, 1979.
