'EXT REME DEEP: MISSION TO THE ABYSS' SUBMERGES VISITORS IN DEEP UNDERSEA WORLD
It's a world that, until a few years ago, no one knew existed. EXTREME DEEP: Mission to the Abyss sponsored by John Hancock Financial Services and Discovery Channel offers opportunities for hands-on exploration of life at the bottom of the sea. Presented by Clear Channel Exhibitions in collaboration with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), EXTREME DEEP is a blockbuster interactive exhibit that highlights the adventure of deep-sea exploration and discovery.
EXTREME DEEP depicts the mysteries of the ocean's greatest depths. Newly discovered life forms, thermal vents, close-up views of deep-sea research submersibles as well as shipwrecks including Titanic , are among the attractions in this deep-sea adventure. Museum visitors will observe firsthand the technology that only recently has allowed men and women to travel to the ocean floor.
"Observation is the cornerstone of science," says David Gallo, Ph.D. in marine geology and WHOI's director of special projects. "In the oceans, because of their great depth, observation requires sophisticated technology. Using new computer technologies, we can gather information from the seafloor faster than ever before."

DRAFT COMMITTEE ON SCIENCE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES SUBCOMMITTEE ON BASIC RESEARCH AND SUBCOMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT Hearing Charter The State of Ocean and Marine Science July 27, 2000 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. 2318 Rayburn House Office Building Purpose The purpose of this hearing is to review Federal support for the Ocean Sciences. Topics of the hearing will include ocean research activities supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Academic Fleet and the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS), and other issues of concern to the ocean research community. Background
NSF
While a number of federal agencies play a role in the ocean sciences, the four major sources of federal funding are NSF, the U.S. Navy, NOAA, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) – each with their own particular ocean science mission. Of these, NSF contributes the largest share. For FY2001, NSF requests $270.48 million for the Ocean Sciences division, an increase of 22.2 percent over the FY2000 current plan. NSF’s mission in supporting ocean science is “to improve knowledge of the physical, chemical and biological processes that characterize both coastal seas and deep ocean basins, and the geological and geophysical processes that shape the continental shelves and deep sea floor.” To this end, NSF supports 70 percent of the basic research in the ocean sciences performed in colleges and universities. Included in NSF’s FY2001 Budget Request is $153.70 million for Ocean Sciences Research Support, with priorities on enhancing support for individual investigator research projects, a greater emphasis on studies of marine biocomplexity, continued development of data assimilation and modeling, enhanced understanding of the earth’s carbon cycle, continued study of life in extreme environments, and enhanced long-term studies of deep ocean systems.

Eugene Cecil LaFond Biography
Kevin Hardy, December 12, 2002
Eugene Cecil LaFond at Ancient Mariners TG on Scripps Pier Sept. 27, 2002 Eugene Cecil LaFond was a quiet man, a scientist and statesman of science, who had a worldwide effect on the new field of oceanography. Born on December 4, 1909, Bridgeport, Washington, he died peacefully in his sleep at home Sunday, December 1, 2002, a few days shy of his 93rd birthday. His wife of 67 years, Katherine Gehring LaFond, his constant companion and scientific partner, and two sons, William and Robert, survive him. Though he traveled worldwide, Gene always considered San Diego his home. His family moved here in 1921, and he graduated from Sweetwater High School(1928) and San Diego State College (1932). He was awarded an honorary D.Sc from Andhra University, India in 1956. In the course of his remarkable career, Gene worked at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, contributed to the content of "The Oceans: Their Physics, Chemistry, and General Biology," the first modern textbook in oceanography, was a pioneer SCUBA diver, dove off California in the bathyscaphe Trieste and other deep-sea research submersibles, conducted experiments under Arctic ice in U.S. Navy submarines near the North Pole, led construction of an oceanographic tower off Mission Beach, lead segments of the two-year Scripps Naga Expedition to Thailand and Vietnam in 1960-62, participated in the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb tests, and under a Fulbright Grant, worked in India with its scientists to establish the first oceanographic institute in that nation.

Resolution Presently, scientists have additional methods to collect or observe the sea floor. Specially equipped ships like the Resolution can drill holes into the sea floor and retrieve cores of the ocean bottom. These ships also have sonar which can help them look at features in detail. Rocks and other data gathered by the ship have allowed marine scientists to develop a good understanding of the composition and history of the sea floor. Research submersibles like the Alvin, have been useful in studying the sea floor. These small submarines usually hold only a pilot and one scientist, but can record the ocean bottom through cameras.

Ocean Research Going Swimmingly
By David Snow Story location: http://www.wired.com/news/medtech/0,1286,61144,00.html 02:00 AM Nov. 25, 2003 PT Imagine a painkiller up to 1,000 times more powerful than morphine, but without an opiate's addictive properties or side effects. Such a drug is reportedly near the end of its decades-long journey from the oceans where it started life as a protein in cone snail venom to your pharmacy. Now imagine waves of new drugs becoming available in the coming decades, panaceas for everything from headaches to cancer. Experts say the cone snail painkiller, ziconotide, which the Irish firm Elan hopes to sell under the name Prialt after Phase III clinical trials are complete, is part of a vanguard of marine drug discoveries. If a boatload of high-profile reports currently circulating gets enough attention and funding, researchers expect a worldwide increase in ocean exploration, netting further drug discoveries and other benefits. "It's kind of like the perfect storm is happening right now, and it's a good storm because it's raising awareness," said Shirley A. Pomponi, vice president and director of research at

Much of this teaching is field based, using localities in the eastern part of the continent and in the Caribbean. He devotes much of his research to understanding the origin of carbonate rocks, principally by investigating modern environments of deposition and applying the concepts learned to the older rock record. This research is a combination of field study, sedimentology, marine geology, stratigraphy, petrography, paleontology and geochemistry. In the past he has worked principally on the paleoecology, sediment dynamics and early diagenesis of warm-water platform carbonates, especially reefs, throughout the geological record. He helped pioneer the use of research submersibles to study reefs and platform margins, established the importance of seafloor cementation, detailed the critical attributes of paleokarst, worked out early Paleozoic platform evolution in the northern Appalachians and documented many of the oldest metazoan reefs. He has authoured and co-edited five books on various aspects of carbonate sediments and the modelling of sedimentary deposits.
