1. COFS School Of Oceanography Research
Within the School of oceanography facilities are available research conducted by facultyand students in as well as manned and remotelyoperated submersibles.

The research program in the School of Oceanography presently is comprised of more than 170 projects covering a broad range of oceanographic investigations, ranging from one-person studies to multidisciplinary, multi-university projects. Annual direct expenditures exceed $11 million.
Well-equipped teaching and research laboratories are augmented by the 65-foot R/V "Clifford A. Barnes" and various small craft. In 1991, the 274-foot R/V "Thomas G. Thompson" joined the fleet.
Funds from federal agencies and from the state of Washington provide research support. Major sources of support during 1987-88 were the National Science Foundation (62%), the Office of Naval Research (22%), the State of Washington (4%), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (3%), the Department of Energy (2%), and other federal agencies such as NASA and EPA (5%). The remaining support was derived from various state and local governmental agencies and from private organizations.

There is potential for confusion between biological oceanography and other branches of science that use marine organisms as models for studies. Some lines of inquiry are distinguished easily from oceanography, such as medical research use of hemoglobins or toxins manufactured by marine organisms because of their relative simplicity, neurophysiological use of squids and tubeworms for their usually large and manipulable nerve cells, and embryological use of sea urchin eggs as easily obtainable models of animal development. Marine biology, which is often a focus of study at the undergraduate level, and a common baccalaureate degree for students entering biological oceanography graduate programs, is rarely a field for more specialized graduate study in oceanography. The title of marine biologist has given way to more specific labels such as toxicologist, developmental biologist, or neurophysiologist.

An Introduction
The Department of Oceanography is located on the University of Hawaii's largest campus (about 20,000 students), overlooking Waikiki and downtown Honolulu, the State Capitol and business and cultural center. As a designated "area of excellence", the marine and earth sciences enjoy strong support at the State and University levels. This has led to rapid expansion of faculty, facilities, and programs over the past decade, and the establishment of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) in 1988. SOEST integrates the Departments of Oceanography, Geology and Geophysics Meteorology , and Ocean Engineering , the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology , the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology , the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute , the Sea Grant and Space Grant Programs, the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory , the International Pacific Research Center , and the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research . Submarines, Part 1 The 'Trieste' at the deepest point of all oceans!
The research submersibles are the first, more peaceful part of the theme 'submarines'. The second part containing the military submarines will follow, see below.
The dream of mankind, to explore the dark depths of the oceans, surely is old as the dream of flying. Around the Mediterranian exists a wellknown legend of Alexander the Great: 'The great king sat for 70 days in his boat of glass and had a look at the wonders and the beasts of the deep. During that time he discovered a huge fish. The fish needed three days to pass by.' (stamp to the left)
To the right we can see the prototype of the first submarine of the great designer John Philip Holland, the 'Holland No. 1'. In 1878 the tests were completed successfully and he continued to built military submarines.
In 1897 the American shipbuilder Simon Lake built the 'Argonaut I'. The boat had a gasoline-driven engine to be able to drive above and below the water surface and real wheels to drive at the bottom of the sea. The crew got fresh air through long pipes leading up to the surface. The sub had an overall length of 36 feet and, in 1898, the boat conducted a succesful voyage from Norfolk to Sandy Hook.
The first people who entered the world of eternal darkness and returning alive were William Beebe and Otis Barton. They dived into the deep inside a ball of steel called 'Bathysphere', (Greek for 'deep ball'). The ball had a weight of 2250 kg, a diameter of 4.5ft and the sheets were 3.81cm pure steel. The ball hang from a steel cable, combined with rubber tubing for electricity and a telephone cable. In 1930 they dived down to 1416 feet, in 1932 to 2165 ft, in 1934 to 2979 ft. (When we speak about submersibles, the bathysphere simply is a 'must-tell'.)

  • Feb.: New species of deep-sea jelly discovered in the deep-sea by MBARI researchers (work done in 2003, published in 2004)
  • May: Asphalt in the Deep Hydrocarbon-seeps of asphalt reported in the deep Gulf of Mexico . Resembling paved roads, these unusual seeps were found near collapsed salt domes, where various tar was apparently squeezed out like lava. Various animals such as tubeworms, clams and mussels were found on or near the asphalt.
  • May: Undersea volcano reported near Antarctica. A young volcanic seamount, rising to within 275m of the surface, has been confirmed on the shelf off N. Antarctica. Its location on a shelf is unusual.

    An invited article was written for a recent issue of Oceanography Magazine, Vol. 15 No. 4/2002, describing NOAA's role in the discovery of a historic Japanese midget submarine in 1,300 feet of water outside the entrance to Pearl Harbor. On August 28, 2002, two research submersibles, the Pisces IV and V, from NOAA's Undersea Research Center at the University of Hawaii made this significant discovery while on a training dive. This 78-foot submarine was the first casualty of World War II Pacific Theater. On December 7, 1941, the midget submarine was sunk by the destroyer USS Ward one hour before the air attack on Pearl Harbor. The paper was entitled " The Search, Discovery and Survey of a World War II Japanese Type "A" Midget Submarine" , and dramatic photos of the submarine were featured on the front and back cover.     SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
    Deep ocean submersibles such as the Mirs and Nautile continue to be effective platforms for undersea work and research because of their extensive sensor, instrumentation, and manipulative capability. The Mir submersibles are considered by some scientists to be the best equipped and most capable research tools for deep sea (6,000 m) research. Although Russia and Ukraine have developed limited remote sensing capability for ocean studies using Lidar and acoustic Doppler current profilers, these designs are not unique and are within the current state of practice. Oceanographic instruments (CTDs, current meters, etc.) are being marketed by Russia and Ukraine. Their data quality is unknown, and intercalibrations should be conducted to determine measurement capabilities. Other factors, such as price, reliability, and maintainability, must also be addressed. Research-type ROVs and AUVs are being actively developed by several European countries outside of the FSU. Unmanned platforms for undersea and oceanographic research using enhanced sensors and samplers are being supported as major programs by the EEC. This is in marked contrast to the United States, where there is no major focused thrust for developing scientific AUVs.

    Dr. Peter Auster Fish Biologist, National Undersea Research Center (Read more about Dr. Auster) Dr. Peter Auster (Ph.D., National University of Ireland, Galway) is the science director of the National Undersea Research Center at the University of Connecticut. His research in fish habitat conservation has earned him national recognition. For example, NOAA named him an Environmental Hero for the Year 2000 for his ecologic research at the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.     Interview with Evan Forde: Mr. Evan Forde was born in Miami, Florida, and became a researcher in the Marine Geology and Geophysics laboratory for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 1973. Mr. Forde is a recognized authority on the formation, evolution and sedimentary processes of east coast U.S. submarine canyons. Among Mr. Forde's early career highlights are successful submersible dive expeditions in several submarine canyons. Additional scientific research has included studies of gravity-induced mass sediment movements on continental slopes, 3-dimensional mapping of hydrothermal plumes, and the study of ocean-atmosphere exchange of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. In 1998, Evan become a researcher in a NOAA Satellite Remote Sensing group, where the work has many potentially far-reaching applications, most notably in the early detection of forming hurricanes as well as improving hurricane intensity and track predictions models.

    Office of Naval Research Bathyscaph Arrives In San Diego for West Coast Oceanographic Diving The Bathyscaph Trieste has arrived in San Diego, California after a voyage from Castellamare, Italy via Norfolk, Virginia, for use in research of the ocean depths off the Southern California coast. The 70-ton diving craft, recently purchased by the Office of Naval Research from renowned Swiss scientists Auguste and Jacques Piccard, has been made available to west coast oceanographers to conduct basic scientific research involving acoustical and biological investigations of Pacific waters in the San Diego area. Long-range objectives of this program are to explore the ocean environment at great depths, and to evaluate the bathyscaph's potentialities both as a research tool and as a deep-diving submarine rescue vessel. Types of research to be conducted will be planned jointly by the Office of Naval Research and the Navy Electronics Laboratory, who will operate the bathyscaph. The first dives are expected to be made in late fall. Pilots at the Navy Electronics Laboratory will be trained to operate the bathyscaph during the coming year by Jacques Piccard, who assisted his father, Professor Auguste Piccard, in designing Trieste and building the Trieste. He is a veteran of 46 dives in the Trieste since she was first placed into service. Mr. Giusseppe Buono, of Italy, has also been engaged by U.S. National Research Council, as an expert in the mechanical aspects of operations.

    The graduate program in Oceanography is offered in a joint doctoral program with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Almost all areas of physical oceanography are covered by faculty and staff of the two institutions, including modeling, theory, observations of the ocean at sea and from space, and laboratory models. Only doctoral candidates are considered for admission in the Joint Program, and the degree is conferred together by the two institutions. WHOI, located about 70 miles south of Boston, is one of the world's leading oceanographic research centers and its facilities include a fleet of research ships and submersibles operating around the world, and extensive laboratory facilities. Students may reside and conduct research at either institution, and much effort has been made to render communication and travel between the institutions as easy as possible.     Presented by Clear Channel Exhibitions in collaboration with WHOI, EXTREME DEEP is a blockbuster interactive exhibit that highlights the adventure of deep-sea exploration and discovery.
    EXTREME DEEP depicts the mysteries of the ocean's greatest depths. Newly discovered life forms, thermal vents, close-up views of deep-sea research submersibles as well as shipwrecks including Titanic , are among the attractions in this deep-sea adventure. Museum visitors will observe firsthand the technology that only recently has allowed man to travel to the ocean floor.
