Research in physical oceanography
Our primary research interests are in describing the state of the global ocean in space and time and understanding the dynamic and thermodynamic processes that maintain this state. Ultimately, we are motivated to understand the ocean's role in Earth's climate and the physical analogies between the ocean and other planetary atmospheres.
Coupled ocean-atmosphere modelling
A variety of models are used for studying the interaction between the atmosphere and oceans. This interaction is strongest in the tropical regions, particularly over the Pacific ocean, where it gives rise to `El Nino' conditions and leads to climate variability on time-scales of a few months to a few years. The ultimate object of our work is to test the predictability of the tropical ocean-atmosphere system. Our models range from fully comprehensive models of the atmosphere and ocean to models of intermediate complexity that retain only the essential physics. In addition, models are being used to understand the nature of the decadal variability of the wind-driven and thermohaline circulations of the ocean and their climate manifestations. Much of the work is carried out in collaboration with other major modelling centres.
General circulation of the ocean
Understanding the key mechanisms controlling the rate at which the ocean interior is refreshed by surface water is a critical issue facing oceanographers interested in climate. A blend of methods is used to approach this problem, including numerical models of the oceanic circulation on parallel computers, observations of dissolved transient tracers (CFCs and radiosotopes) from research cruises and non-linear statistical techniques. The combination leads to improved knowledge of the general ciruculation of the ocean and exchange with the atmosphere and hence enhanced understanding of the ocean's role in shaping the Earth's climate.

I. Afanasyev D. Bourgault B. deYoung L. Zedel Located at the confluence of the cold, fresh Labrador Current coming from the north and the warm, saline Gulf Stream coming from the south, Newfoundland is one of the most exciting places in the world for the study of oceanography. It is located at a pivotal point in the world climate system, one of the most important regions for the exchange of heat between the tropical and polar regions. Newfoundland has a growing offshore oil industry operating in a region known for severe storms and frequented by icebergs. The once great Grand Banks fishery is now in a state of collapse. All of these factors make the understanding of the oceans around Newfoundland a matter of great economic and social importance. Ocean science studies have become a focus of research at Memorial University and activity is expected to accelerate over the coming years. The establishment of the Physical Oceanography Group in 1979 and its subsequent growth to a position of international standing demonstrates this commitment. The group offers programs leading to the M.Sc. and PhD degrees.

Walk along the seashore and look out over the water. You will see waves rolling in from the ocean, possibly building up into breakers, which, as they reach the shore, come crashing down into turbulent muddy foam. You will see boats fighting (or using) the wind and tide in their travels. Along the water's edge are pieces of driftwood, battered fishing gear, and maybe even a bottle with a message. Where did it come from? Where will it go to? And...why? People who have decided to spend their lives trying to find answers to this kinds of questions are called Physical Oceanographers. Basically, we try to understand why water goes from one place to another and how this happens. And not just water, but also the things that are in it - salt, heat, pollutants. These questions aren't academic either. What if instead of a bottle we had an oil spill? Or a sewage outflow? We catch fish in the ocean - where does their food come from? What happens if a storm blows, or temperatures rise? Is the answer different in summer than in winter? Understanding the physics of the ocean is a vital first step in understanding everything else about the ocean - and here in Canada we have a lot of ocean around us!

    Oceanography - And Your Career
What is oceanography? Oceanography is a multidisciplinary science concerned with knowledge of the oceans and improvements in technology based on such knowledge. It incorporates many scientific fields that can be applied to the marine environmentphysics, geology, chemistry, biology, meteorology, geography, and geodesy. What do oceanographers do? There are two types of oceanographers in the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command. The physical oceanographer studies the physical properties of the ocean and the relationship between the sea and the atmosphere. The geological oceanographer studies the topographic features, rocks, sediments, and physical composition of the ocean floor. The Command employs other types of marine scientists, such as geophysicists and physical science technicians who examine other aspects of the ocean environment. Where do oceanographers work? Because oceanography is the study of the ocean, most oceanographers spend a great deal of time at sea. The Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command operates eight Military Sealift Command ships, conducting oceanographic survey operations worldwide. Some oceanographers work in ocean research at other organizations.

    INTRODUCTION
The Maury Project is the American Meteorological Society's comprehensive national program of teacher enhancement based on studies of the physical foundations of oceanography. Major components of the program include: (a) the development of a cadre of master oceanographic education resource teachers who provide peer training opportunities for their colleagues throughout the country, and (b) the dissemination and implementation of scientifically accurate and pedagogically sound instructional resource materials directed towards teachers. The American Meteorological Society has a long-term interest in precollege ocean education. It serves the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences, and publishes several journals including the Journal of Physical Oceanography , the Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology , and the electronic journal Earth Interactions In recognition of the underrepresentation of certain groups in the Earth system sciences, the Maury Project incorporates a special AMS/NOAA initiative to promote minority participation in science through teacher enhancement. The goal is to train as many teachers as possible who are members of groups underrepresented in the sciences and/or teach (or will peer train teachers who teach) significant numbers of precollege students from underrepresented groups.

    Description
The ICES Journal of Marine Science publishes articles, short communications, and critical reviews that contribute to our scientific understanding of marine systems and the impact of human activities. The Journal serves as a foundation for scientific advice across the broad spectrum of management and conservation issues related to the marine environment. Oceanography, marine habitats, living resources, and related management topics constitute the key elements of papers eligible for publication. Integrated studies that bridge gaps between traditional disciplines are particularly welcome. The scope of the Journal has been broadened to include economic, social, and public administration studies to the extent that they are directly related to management of the seas and are of general interest to marine scientists. Proceedings of ICES-sponsored symposia constitute an integral part of the
