DMS Headline NSF Caribbean Tsunami Workshop March 30-31, 2004 San Juan Beach Hotel , San Juan, P.R Because of its climate and natural beauty, the Caribbean region coastal population is growing at a very fast pace. Everyone who lives in this region is fully aware of the hurricane threat and is, to a great extent, prepared for dealing with the hurricane hazard. On the contrary, most of the people living in this region are not informed of what has been very nicely described as "the forgotten hazard", which is the tsunami. According to Lander et al. (2002), since 1498 there have been twenty-seven verified true tsunamis and an additional nine as "very likely true tsunamis". In the past 136 years there have been three destructive tsunamis in the northeastern Caribbean, the last one being in 1946. In the Caribbean Sea region the potential sources for tsunami generation include earthquakes, sub-aerial and submarine landslides and underwater volcanic explosions. The landslide-tsunami threat in the Caribbean comes in part from the existence of the Puerto Rico Trench just north of the northeastern islands, along which, for example, there is evidence of a large slump with a potential volume of approximately 900-1500 km3 (Schwab et al., 1993; Grindlay, 1998), and many other smaller ones (ten Brink and Smith, 2003); smaller compared with the approximately 1000 km3 mentioned above, but still potentially large enough to cause extensive local damage. McAnn (2003) has identified potential submarine areas along the eastern Caribbean where slopes are sufficiently large so that the landslide hazard is considerable. There is also a landslide threat from the collapse of volcanic cones, especially along the eastern islands (Young, 2003). A good example is the Souffriere volcano in the island of Montserrat.

Advances
The primary mission of the Physical Oceanography Division (PhOD) of the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) is to provide and interpret oceanographic data by conducting research relevant to the following NOAA Strategic Goals:
  • Predict and Assess Decadal to Centennial Climate Change
  • Implement Seasonal to Interannual Climate Forecasts
  • Sustain Healthy Coastal Ecosystems Data are provided by scientific research cruises, large scale and regional observing systems, and satellites. Sea-going activity includes "blue water" research cruises conducted globally and coastal water research cruises conducted in U.S. waters. Ocean observing systems operated by NOAA's Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), housed in PhOD, provide data from research and merchant ships, surface drifters and profiling floats to meet forecast and stewardship needs. Satellite observations are also an important tool used by PhOD scientists and provide observations on the basin and global scale. The resulting data are interpreted using empirical and statistical methods and numerical models as tools to understand dynamical processes in the ocean/atmosphere coupled system and coastal areas. The PhOD Division has a staff of approximately 30 research scientists and technicians. The Staff is supplemented by Scientists and technicians through the

Officially entitled "Inventory Catalogue of Hawai`i's Coral Reefs" the Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative Computer Interactive Bibliography (HCRIB) is a project of the Hawai`i Wildlife Fund (Principal Investigators, Carl J. Berg and Hannah J. Barnard) in collaboration with AECOS , Inc. (Eric B. Guinther, Joann Fisher, and Hilary Maybaum). This project has been supported by a grant from NOAA / U. S. Coral Reef Initiative The HCRIB is an EndNote Plus bibliographic reference data base which provides reference listings of surveys, studies, technical reports, atlases, and the like on subjects ranging from physical oceanography, biology, taxonomy, water quality, ecology, and reef resources for the main Hawaiian Islands. In gathering references for inclusion, the editors have placed particular emphasis on technical reports (essentially unpublished reports) by corporations, consultants, students, organizations, and government agencies for the reason that these types of studies and surveys are most difficult to track through standard bibliographic data bases. Also, far greater numbers of field surveys and site specific observations are available from this "gray" literature than anywhere else. References listed in this database are limited to marine environments found around the main Hawaiian Islands from the shore out to a depth of about 60 feet. A similar data base for Hawai`i fresh and brackish waters is under development (see

    Graduate Studies in Physical Oceanography
The physical oceanography group at UConn's Department of Marine Sciences includes four faculty members: Frank Bohlen Dan Codiga Ed Monahan, and Jim O'Donnell
A common thread of their various research interests is an emphasis on understanding fluid dynamics in the coastal environment, but the collective expertise of the group touches on a wide range of physical oceanographic phenomena. As a result, M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in the department gain a broad exposure to the essential subdisciplines of physical oceanography in addition to their in-depth research training.
As well as continued sea-going observational work facilitated by the new R/V Connecticut , our research techniques include numerical circulation simulations, inverse modeling, analytical and theoretical studies, laboratory experiments, the development of in-situ instruments, and satellite data analysis.
Graduate study in physical oceanography at UConn combines quality teaching in the comfortable and personalized setting of the Avery Point campus together with opportunities for involvement in a variety of outstanding research projects. Our integration with the other strengths of the department in biological and chemical oceanography gives us a unique flavor among physical oceanography graduate programs.
In addition to regularly scheduled seminars and new courses that we tailor according to the demands of individual graduate student interests, courses we offer in physical oceanography include the following:
