SOUTHAMPTON OCEANOGRAPHY CENTRE
SOC commissions ground-breaking ROV
Southampton Oceanography Centre has commissioned the UK's first ROV dedicated to deep-sea exploration and research. Capable of carrying out research down to depths of 6,500 metres, the ROV will give scientists access to 98% of the world's oceans. Professor Paul Tyler of SOC, who leads the £4.5 million project, has been helping the BBC with the filming of their recent success 'Blue Planet'. His particular interest is the animals that inhabit hydrothermal vents at underwater volcanoes.
Prof Tyler is confident that the ROV will re-launch the UK's marine science community back to the forefront of deep-sea research. The ROV's TV cameras enable observation close-up of the habitats of the seafloor and the specially built manipulators are able to take samples of even the most delicate animals. Tyler believes that in addition to biologists, chemists, geographers, and geologists will also benefit from this technological resource. The customised ROV, based on the Jason II, will be built by the USA's Deep Submergence Group at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Woods Hole, Massachusetts). A team of UK engineers will help to build the vehicle, gaining first-hand experience of its construction. Based at SOC, the ROV will also be available for use by researchers from across the UK as part of the marine science technology pool.

SOUTHAMPTON OCEANOGRAPHY CENTRE
SOC measures deep Atlantic currents for first time
Southampton Oceanography Centre scientist Dr. John Gould has recently worked with scientists in the United States and Europe to map sub-surface water circulation in the north eastern North Atlantic. The results were published in the 10th October issue of ‘Nature’. This was their first measurement of the currents of the northern North Atlantic below the ocean surface. Circulation in this part of the Atlantic is important not only to the local climates of America and Europe but affects the global climate and climate change. Some 200 floats drifting with the currents took measurements at two depths, near 1km and 2km, their positions acoustically tracked by sound signals transmitted from moored sources. At depths of 1km, the ocean is influenced by water from the Mediterranean, at 2km by water from the Labrador Sea west of Greenland. A key finding was how the seafloor topography constrains circulation patterns well above the bottom, in particular the eastward flow from the Labrador Sea is confined to fracture zones, narrow gaps in the mid-Atlantic Ridge.
8 November 02 Autosub heads for Antarctica
In February this year Dr David Vaughn of the British Antarctica Survey will be using Southampton Oceanography Centre's Autosub to investigate under the cavity beneath Pine Island Glacier, one of the fastest Antarctic ice streams. Satellites show that the grounded portion of the glacier thinned by up to 1.6m per year from 1992 to 1999. A large iceberg, 42 by 17 kilometres, broke off the Pine Island Glacier in early November 2001.

In August 2000, seismometers on islands in the South Pacific began picking up unusual signals coming from regions even farther south. During the next 5 months, 13 separate groups of pressure waves traveled through the ocean depths for thousands of miles before they smacked into the islands and were converted into detectable ground motions. In most cases, the energy received by the instruments was concentrated at a few frequencies, says Emile A. Okal, a seismologist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. That suggests the source of the vibrations had a distinct shape. Sometimes the islands' shaking lasted no more than 2 minutes, but on other occasions it went on for hours. Scientists previously had detected similar vibrations from undersea volcanic activity, but these events displayed a puzzling characteristic: Unlike any volcano, the source of the pressure waves seemed to move across Antarctica's Ross Sea, heading northwest at a rate of several kilometers per day. Satellite observations of the Ross Sea during that time solved the puzzle handily. The data enabled researchers to precisely pin the source of most of the events to a large, drifting iceberg dubbed B-15B. The space images show that this 135-kilometer-by-40-km chunk, a piece of a megaberg that calved from the Ross Ice Shelf a few months earlier (SN: 5/12/01, p. 298), had been intermittently colliding with other large bergs as winds and currents propelled it across the ocean.

... This Week Oceanography in Kansas? Only in the Olathe District February 5, 2003
What can students learn about oceanography in land-locked Kansas? Plenty, according to Olathe District Schools science teacher Sarah Coddington, who teaches a pilot course in the subject at Olathe North High School. The pilot course is a small-scale version of a lab- and field-based oceanography course that she will teach next fall. The course is one of several newly developed courses included in the district's Earth Science Frontiers Program that will be housed at Olathe North. The school's science wing is being renovated to include the addition of a marine science lab, where students can study marine and aquatic life hands-on through various salt and freshwater tanks. In the marine lab, students will study microorganisms, like plankton. "Plankton make up the base of the food chain and are the energy source of the ocean," Coddington said. "Students will be conducting research on the physical properties of water. For example, if we change the salinity (saltiness) of the water, what effect does that have on plankton?"

U.S. oceanography vessel visits Havana port
H AVANA, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Cubans living near the port of Havana woke up on Friday to the unusual sight of a large oceangoing ship flying the U.S. flag moored right in front of Cuban navy headquarters. The ship was the R/V Seward Johnson, an oceanography exploration vessel equipped with a minisubmarine and registered in Fort Pierce, Florida. A crew member told Reuters the vessel, operated by the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution Inc., had been involved in filming underwater coral reefs on Cuba's southern coast with a television crew from the U.S. network Discovery Channel. A long-standing trade embargo imposed against Communist-ruled Cuba by the United States restricts travel to the Caribbean island by U.S. ships, but licenses to visit are sometimes granted by U.S. authorities for special reasons such as scientific research. Small U.S. yachts and pleasure craft often visit Cuban coastal marinas, many ignoring the U.S. embargo. But Havana residents said they could not remember the last time a large oceangoing U.S. vessel was seen moored in Havana port, which only a few years ago was more accustomed to welcoming Soviet warships and freighters. The U.S. vessel later headed for the mouth of Havana Bay, within sight of the historic Morro Castle and Lighthouse. The crew member said the crew would be carrying out diving operations there during the day. REUTERS
