Ocean science combines direct observation of this environment with a systematic approach for understanding the processes that control it. Oceanographers are explorers as well as scientists, and many of the world's oceans are yet to be explored.
Students who have already developed a special interest in biology, chemistry, geology or physics, can choose marine biology or applied marine biology, marine chemistry, geological oceanography, etc. Students who have a strong interest in biology can combine this with chemical or physical oceanography in marine biology or oceanography, while those who are more interested in physical science can choose ocean science, which offers a wide choice of courses across the full range of disciplines. First of all, however, you need a B Sc degree in one of the above sciences. Do not make the mistake of getting a B Sc in oceanography right off the bat. This is like trying to go to a medical college without first learning basic biology or zoology. After that you will need an advanced degree, either M Sc or PhD

Oceanography in the News
This is a selection of stories, subject to the following rules. First, I don't guarantee close daily coverage of everything that happens (because I have a job to do apart from maintaining this Web page). Second, the site has to be generally accessible. (Many journals make their pages accessible only to people who have paid a subscription to the written version.) Third, I try to choose sources that tend to keep their pages accessible for more than two weeks over those that do not. For example, I've had to give up on the New York Times . It is a fine paper, but its new policy is to take off its stories within DAYS and then charge for access to them. Similar pages on the Geology Department web site are

June 2001 Background. The National Science Foundation (NSF), through its Office of Polar Programs (OPP), supports basic research in a wide range of scientific disciplines in both the Arctic and the Antarctic. Due to the harsh conditions and remoteness of these locations, logistical support for science in the field is a complex undertaking and involves partnerships with other nations, with the private sector, with academic institutions and with the U.S. military. NSF is an independent federal agency and is the only federal agency whose mission covers research in all fields of science and engineering. The 109th Airlift Wing, N.Y. Air National Guard.

Lita Proctor arrived in March as a visiting scientist (Associate Program Director) in Biological Oceanography. Lita comes from the Department of Oceanography at Florida State University and is also a Visiting Scientist with the National Research Program, U.S. Geological Survey in Reston. She took her Ph.D. at SUNY Stony Brook. Her current research interests are in microbial ecology, including the diversity and function of communities in marine sediments, biofilms and zooplankton microflora. She has broad experience working both in the water column and in sediments, and on research that spans from marine virus ecology to molecular characterization of microorganisms in the N cycle.
    Reviewer Workload
Many of you may have noticed a recent increase in the number of proposal review requests that you receive, especially during the Spring months. With an increase in the number of special funding initiatives relevant to biological oceanography (particularly at NSF), with Bio OCE getting actively involved with virtually all of these initiatives, and with projects submitted to other regular core programs, our community is being tapped for an ever-increasing number of reviews.

NASA takes control of new oceanography spacecraft
    NASA/JPL NEWS RELEASE

    Posted: April 28, 2002
Jason 1's oceanography mission to monitor global climate interactions between the sea and atmosphere reached another major milestone this past week with the successful handover of day-to-day operations from the French Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. With the handover, JPL is now responsible for around-the-clock real-time monitoring of Jason 1's health and status, and for generating and uploading weekly stored command sequences to the spacecraft. These sequences contain data for mission planning, payload commanding, navigation, ground station acquisition and routine maintenance functions. The French Space Agency's Satellite Control Center in Toulouse, France, will continue to perform spacecraft engineering and navigation tasks. Both organizations will be jointly responsible for processing mission science data. "Jason's measurement performance to date has been excellent," said Dr. Lee-Lueng Fu, Jason project scientist at JPL. "The early mission phases have been very smooth. This success is due in large part to the hard work and outstanding cooperation between the U.S. and French teams, who continue to work together to leverage experience and efficiencies gleaned from a decade of joint Topex/Poseidon operations. We look forward to continuing to work with the French to establish routine mission operations." Much like its Topex/Poseidon predecessor, the Jason program's shared operations management approach is designed to maximize efficiencies and make the most of the two space agencies' differing program roles and expertise. The French Space Agency managed Jason 1 satellite development, engineering and delivery from the French aerospace company Alcatel, so the program's early post-launch checkout phases were conducted by the French. NASA, by contrast, is responsible for two of the mission's three ground tracking stations in Wallops Island, Va., and Poker Flats, Alaska, (the other is in Aussaguel, France), so JPL has responsibility for oversight of day-to-day routine mission operations.

The joint NASA/French Space Agency oceanography satellite Jason 1 has reached its operational orbit and begun six months of instrument calibrations with its sister spacecraft, Topex/Poseidon. Mission flight controllers at France's Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales' (CNES) Satellite Control Center, Toulouse, France, and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., last week commanded Jason 1 to fire its thrusters and lower itself into its operational orbit of 1,337 kilometers (830 miles). Jason 1 is now approximately one minute (approximately 370 kilometers or 230 miles) ahead of the Topex/Poseidon satellite, on an identical ground track. Launched December 7, 2001 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., Jason 1 was initially inserted into a 1,327 kilometer (823 mile) orbit 10 kilometers (6 miles) below Topex/Poseidon. A series of thruster maneuvers over the past five weeks gradually placed Jason 1 into its current orbit. Checkout of the spacecraft and its instrument payload is now complete. All instrument and spacecraft functions and the operations systems at the French space agency and JPL are functioning nominally.

How to advertise South Nyack woman honored as oceanography pioneer By JANE LERNER THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: July 18, 2001) In the days when it was universally believed that the ocean floor was flat, Tharp proved otherwise. And when she discovered proof of the controversial idea that all of the continents were once connected, her thinking about continental drift was dismissed as "girl talk." Time proved her right again and again. Tharp's lifelong ability to break barriers and explain the unexplainable was recognized yesterday when the 80-year-old South Nyack resident was named first recipient of the Lamont-Doherty Heritage Award. The award honors her as a pioneer of oceanography and of women's contributions to the sciences.

100 years later, Scripps first name in oceanography By DAVE SCHWAB Scripps Institution of Oceanography's first year in its second century is going to be a challenging one. But despite having to cope with state budget cuts, Scripps' mission - to teach and to communicate scientific understanding of the oceans, atmosphere, earth and other planets for the benefit of society and the environment - remains unchanged. Scripps Institution of Oceanography is a branch of UCSD. In existence since 1913, Scripps predates the university's establishment by many years. Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, Tom Collins, the institute's deputy director for administrative affairs, said that Scripps will be forced to pare many programs to hold the financial line. "This year, the state imposed an additional 10-percent reduction in funding for all the places in the UC system that have research money," said Collins. "What that translates into for us is about $1.05 million, and that's on top of last year's $1.34 million in cuts. In all, we're going to have to come up with about $1.3 million this year in cuts. Collins said that the good news is they won't have any more cutting to do this year, since they did so much last year. "The bad news is we may be required in the future to come up with additional cuts in our programs. And that could be very serious, because we are at the wall now."

Editor's note: This article on the University of Miami's Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Center (UM MFBS) is the fifth in a series that appears intermittently in NIEHS News. The series highlights the activities of Environmental Health Sciences and Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Centers. The first article in the series appeared in volume 101, number 7. Stationed on the white sands of Virginia Key overlooking Biscayne Bay, the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences is home to the University of Miami's Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Center. The center is jointly funded by the NIEHS and the University of Miami, and serves as a focal point for marine-related health issues for the temperate United States, Central and South America, and the Caribbean basin. The center plays a leading role in research on natural seafood toxins, and with the advent of seafood safety legislation in early 1995, research at the center is critical in providing a science-based approach to seafood safety. The Rosenstiel School has been involved in research related to the tropical and subtropical oceans and atmosphere, its flora and fauna, since its creation in 1943; it is the third largest oceanographic institution in the United States. The UM MFBS Center has funded programs to investigate the use of marine species as models of human diseases, molecular mechanisms and orphan receptors relating to marine toxins, neurophysiology, metabolism, and immunology. The UM MFBS is the newest of five marine centers and is directed by Daniel G. Baden. Associate directors are Patrick Walsh and David Adams. The center fosters collaboration among eight investigators from four university departments, with ten scientists carrying out pilot projects. Four center postdoctoral fellows provide additional expertise in selected research areas. The collaborations resulting from center activities extend to all campuses of the University of Miami and to colleagues elsewhere in the United States and abroad.

Credit: NASA - click to enlarge. University of Arizona After a 7-year interplanetary voyage, NASA's Cassini spacecraft will reach Saturn this July and begin what promises to be one of the most exciting missions in planetary exploration history. After years of work, scientists have just completed plans for Cassini's observations of Saturn's largest moon, Titan. "Of course, no battle plan survives contact with the enemy," said Ralph Lorenz, an assistant research scientist at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory in Tucson. The spacecraft will deploy the European Space Agency's Huygens probe to Titan for a January 2005 landing. Nearly half the size of Earth, frigid Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a thick atmosphere. Smog has prevented scientists from getting more than a tantalizing hint of what may be on the moon's amazing surface. "Titan is a completely new world to us, and what we learn early on will likely make us want to adjust our plans. But we have 44 flybys of Titan in only four years, so we have to have a basic plan to work to."
