: Oceanography Summary : Students will construct functional replicas of oceanographic tools and demonstrate and explain their use. Key Words and Concepts Covered : oceanographic equipment, sampling Introduction : How do we study the oceans? Traditional oceanography techniques included observation and lowering nets, scoops, and buckets to sample the water and bottom sediments. Modern oceanography employs sophisticated versions of these tools but also increasingly uses electronic probes, sound waves, and real time samplers with live links to computers as well as remotely operated vehicles and satellites. What to Expect : Many students have some knowledge of submersibles such as ALVIN and Jason which were used to explore wrecks, but students may be less familiar with equipment used to sample the physical, chemical, biological, and geological aspects of the oceans. In this activity, students should use print and online sources of information. The hardest part may be to find an example of a project where the instrument was used. Try PUNA Ridge LEO-15 , and Oceanus Magazine for starters.

Teaching Activity
For Atlantic Canada : Cultural Scavenger Hunt
Break the students into groups. Give them one week to collect as many stories, songs and other artistic pieces from the region that use the ocean as inspiration. They must then create a poster or bulletin board display to showcase their findings, and to explain the importance of the ocean in the Atlantic region. With older students you may want to discuss how this region would be different if various aspects of people's interactions with the ocean changed (i.e., fishing was banned, water transportation was banned, etc.) For Other Regions: Interview
Have your students interview students in an Atlantic Canadian school via email. The purpose of the interview should be to gain an understanding of how the ocean has impacted the lives of Atlantic Canadians . With older students you may want to discuss how this region would be different if various aspects of people's interactions with the ocean changed (i.e., fishing was banned, water transportation was banned, etc.) Prior to beginning this activity, the teacher should find potential schools on the Internet (type into a search engine "Nova Scotia", "

Ocean Topography and Zonation Activity Introduction
During days one and two of this lesson, we filled in unlabeled diagrams of the following during a class discussion:
  • Equatorial view of the oceans and continents (Fig. 1.8) Top-view and side-view of large scale features of the seafloor (Fig. 1.9) Marine climactic zones (Fig. 1.18) Classification of marine environment zonation (Fig. 1.30)
(Sumich, 1992) During the labeling process, we discussed why there are large-scale features (plate tectonics), climactic zones (planet tilt and heating), and environmental zones (water depth, substrate/no substrate, light availability). Now after dividing into four different groups, (one for each diagram), you will construct scale 3-D models of your group’s assigned diagram, and will be evaluated according to a teacher- made grading scale. When you are done, your model will be presented to the class. Materials Any arts and crafts materials that you or the teacher provides Procedure
  • Organize into groups and find out which diagram you are to do.

    CLASSROOM LESSON PLANS
Dr Robert A. Hatch - University of Florida
T he following Lesson Plans, written entirely by Middle and High School teachers, represent the final product of the collaborative project, 'History of Science in the Secondary School Curriculum.' The Project was funded by a major two-year grant from the National Science Foundation in cooperation with the National History Teaching Alliance. The Program was structured around a series of collaborations between university faculty and selected participants from secondary schools in Florida and Virginia. Each year thirty teachers (one History and one Science teacher from fifteen schools) attended a three-week Summer Seminar and a series of follow-up meetings throughout the year.
A lthough several goals were established for the Program, the primary objectives were, first, to heighten concern in public schools for science literacy and an understanding of science and culture by means of sustained discussion among school and university teachers on the status of education in science, mathematics, and technology; second, to establish an on-going History of Science Resource Center in order to enhance teacher preparation, develop tested teaching strategies, and to disseminate resulting materials nationally.
O ne substantial result of the latter object are the Lesson Plans below. They were written by participants in the Program and are now made fully available (for non-commercial use) either by downloading the files or by linking to this site. The Lesson Plans have a two-fold purpose. First, to help teachers incorporate Science into the History classroom; second, to encourage the use of History of Science in Science classrooms. The following Lesson Plans contain new and useful ideas on how to present traditional concepts in a fresh and creative way. While they vary in application, each unit was classroom tested by as many as three evaluators at various educational levels. They are well-organized and appropriate for the grade level and subject indicated in the 'Note to the Teacher' at the beginning of each unit.
