  • Energy in the earth system (9-12)
  • Geochemical cycles (9-12) To ride its waves, dive its depths, sample its contents, and measure its movements, the ocean invites them all - chemists, biologists, physicists, geologists. To comprehend the system as a whole, scientists must cross the boundaries of disciplines. This month we are focusing on a unique resource which has gone beyond the typical boundaries of both science and education. On the Classroom BATS web site, you will find both data and lesson plans presented in a groundbreaking way. The creators of Classroom BATS are obviously accustomed to thinking in a holistic manner. Classroom BATS takes its name from the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study, a long-term program of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research (BBSR). Scientists in this program set sail every month to study the chemical, physical, and biological properties of the ocean near Bermuda, with a focus on the ocean's role in global environmental change. The data collected by BATS scientists represent the world's longest continuous time series of open-ocean measurements. The goal of Classroom BATS is to create an on-line learning environment that allows science teachers to use real ocean data to conduct inquiry-based learning in their grade 6-12 classrooms. The lesson plans are all correlated to

Overview: Oceanography is an interdisciplinary science that involves the study of the entire ocean, from the shallow coastal areas to the deepest trenches. It involves geology, biology, chemistry, and physics. Students will learn about some of the important discoveries that oceanographers have made and some areas that they are still investigating. They'll use two Web sites to gather this information, including National Geographic's Blue Frontier site. They will conclude by making posters explaining how oceanography is used and why it's important.

Because there is so much to learn and know, oceanographers generally specialize in specific subdisciplines of oceanography. Students will learn about the five primary subdisciplines of oceanography and will think of questions that each type of oceanographer might ask when conducting research in his or her field. They will then examine Web sites to learn about oceanographic research and determine which types of oceanographer would be the most involved and interested in these research projects. The Physics of Ocean Science is proud to present: The Trials and Tribulations of Being a Drop of Water By: Marc Swanson
This unit is focusing upon properties of water. The unit has been designed so that the middle school student will understand how marine organisms deal with some environmental factors associated with living in an ocean water habitat.
Unit Rationale: This unit has been created around the parameters of Physical Oceanography however it should not be considered 'content driven.' The content merely provides the theme for students to use the process skills of science. These process skills-Observing Classifying Measuring Evaluating Applying- should be the root of elementary and intermediate science instruction. Once a student becomes comfortable with these skills, then the doors to scientific discovery (no matter the discipline) become opened wider. (Use visual "Umbrellas" here if possible)
    Unit Framework:
    Teacher Purpose:
Refinement and Reinforcement of Process Skills.

    Student Purpose/Motivation/Focus:
Ocean Biology: Reexamining how marine plants and animals cope with their ocean environment. Students will begin unit by choosing a 'favorite' marine animal. They will pre -assess how they think this animal is specifically adapted to marine environment. This will provide the anticipatory set and create future possible dissonance in their understanding as unit is presented.

Teachers, please use our JLMS Lesson Plan Template to write your lesson plan. It's on our server in the Teacher Folder/LINKS2/Transgrade Policies. If you're creating a web page to direct students to sites, please use the Web Page Templates in the LINKS2 folder/2000-01 Templates.
