Abrupt Climate Change
Common Misconceptions about Abrupt Climate Change

Several decades of scientific research have yielded significant advances in understanding the ocean's role in regulating Earth's climate. This summary covers some of the major points about abrupt climate change that are often misunderstood. Testimony to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation
OCCI Director, William Curry, describes changes in the ocean that have been detected in only the last two years and discusses possible ocean and climate changes that may occur in the future if the planet continues to warm. Rate of Ocean Circulation Directly Linked to Abrupt Climate Change in North Atlantic Region
A new study strengthens evidence that the oceans and climate are linked in an intricate dance, and that rapid climate change may be related to how vigorously ocean currents transport heat from low to high latitudes. Salt Levels Changing in the Oceans
Saltier tropical oceans and fresher ocean waters near the poles are further signs of global warming's impacts on the planet.

A formal graduate degree program, the highly acclaimed MIT/WHOI Joint Program in graduate studies founded in 1968, has an enrollment of 120 to 130. The Postdoctoral Program and the summer programs for undergraduates have offered excellent learning opportunities for four decades. Objectives of Flow Cytometry Work in Marine Planktology Synechococcus ) and small eukaryotic algae in different oceanic provinces such as the Baltic Sea, the North Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea, the Indian Ocean and in Antarctic waters. In addition to abundance estimates, flow cytometry allows to quantify changes in cellular pigmentation (chlorophyll and phycoerythrin concentrations) of different distinguished phytoplankton sub-populations in response to the light or nutrient regime, either along a depth profile or in incubation experiments. Thus, information on the physiological status or response upon different treatments (changes in light conditions, nutrient additions) can be easily assessed by flow cytometry. In addition to abundance estimates, flow cytometry was used to study ecophysiological aspects of pico- and nanophytoplankton by application of specific fluorescent dyes and/or fluorogenic substrates:

    • Ocean Institute - The Ocean Institute is the organization through which we go on our floating lab trips. Located in Dana Pt., 'the Ocean Institute is a laboratory for the creation, testing, and dissemination of new ideas, strategies, and technologies for teaching and learning. The Institute is a leader, serving as a resource to museums, school districts, teachers, and others who seek to enhance and strengthen an educational program. The curriculum crosses all traditional disciplines, but draws heavily from history and the sciences using content derived from the ocean.'
    • The Ocean Project - 'We are a new initiative that intends to create in people a lasting, measurable, top-of-mind awareness of the importance, value, and sensitivity of the oceans. We believe that the single greatest impediment to healthy and productive marine and coastal areas is the public's low level of ocean awareness. Through unprecedented collaboration among aquariums, zoos, science, technology, and natural history museums, and other educational institutions that together serve more than 100 million visitors each year, The Ocean Project aims to significantly increase the success of ocean conservation. We will also collaborate with local, regional, and national nonprofit conservation and environmental organizations to actively involve people in conservation activities in their communities and better connect them to the oceans.'

The ICES Working Group on Marine Data Management (WGMDM) provides a forum for the exchange of expertise and ideas for those involved in marine data management in ICES Member Countries, and the provision of advice to the ICES Secretariat, in particular to the Oceanography Secretary. The WGMDM has designed a series of Data Type Guidelines to describe the elements of data and metadata important to the ocean research community. These guidelines are targeted toward physical-chemical-biological data types collected on oceanographic research vessel cruises. Each guideline addresses the data and metadata requirements of a specific data type.

Resources Library ... Information Technology The Skidaway Institute of Oceanography was founded in 1968 when Robert C. Roebling donated his Modena Plantation on the northern tip of Skidaway Island near Savannah to the State of Georgia for the establishment of a marine research institution. The Institute staff today numbers around eighty, including scientists with terminal degrees in a wide variety of fields.
The research focus at Skidaway Institute includes not only the deep ocean but also the continental shelves and estuaries, two regions where humans interact most intimately with the sea. The Institute maintains several unique facilities for enhancing marine research and is located on the bank of the Skidaway River, a pristine saltwater, tidally-dominated channel with access to a diverse range of estuarine and coastal habitats.
