SIO Reference Number 98-16 In the 100th anniversary issue of Sunset Magazine, published May 1998, the "ongoing timeline of major events" says that in 1952 UC Berkeley physicist Hugh Bradner invented the wet suit. This single fact summarizes a more complex story. In the spring of 1951, Bradner decided to spend some "weekend time" improving the equipment for the navy frogmen. Soon thereafter, he sent ideas and concepts of the wet suit to UC Berkeley physicist, Lauriston C. "Larry" Marshall, who was involved in a U.S. Navy/National Research Council Panel on Underwater Swimmers. In the fall of 1951 the effort to actively develop the wet suit began when colleagues at the Berkeley Radiation Lab joined Bradner in the fabrication and testing of various materials. Bradner already held patents for a number of inventions and clearly had the skills and knowledge to help underwater swimmers and swimmers in general. His goal was straightforward, design a wet suit for the military underwater swimmer. In a letter to Larry Marshall dated June 21, 1951, Bradner wrote that suits do not need to be watertight if thermal insulation is obtained by air entrapped in the material of the suit. The diver does not have to be dry to stay warm. He began testing the wet suit models in the fall of 1951.

Definitions - Fields of Science and Engineering
Fields of science and engineering in this survey consist of eight broad field categories, each consisting of a number of detailed fields. The broad fields are life sciences; psychology; physical sciences; environmental sciences; mathematics and computer sciences; engineering; social sciences; and other sciences, not elsewhere classified. The term "not elsewhere classified" (n.e.c.) is used for multidisciplinary projects within a broad field and for single-discipline projects for which a separate field has not been assigned. The following list presents the detailed fields grouped under each of the broad fields, together with illustrative disciplines of detailed fields. The illustrative disciplines are intended to be guidelines, not sharp definitions; they represent examples of disciplines generally classified under each detailed field. A discipline under one detailed field may be classified under another detailed field when the major emphasis is elsewhere. Research in biochemistry, for example, might be reported as biological, agricultural, or medical, depending on the orientation of the project. Human biochemistry would be classified under biological, but animal biochemistry or plant biochemistry would fall under agricultural. In no case is the research reported under more than one field. No double counting is intended or allowed.
  • Life sciences consist of five detailed fields: biological (excluding environmental); environmental biology; agricultural; medical; and life sciences, n.e.c. Examples of the disciplines under each of these fields are as follows:

A direct comparison between the historical record of lake level and the O signal in carbonate sediments from Lake Turkana, Kenya
Ricketts, Richard D., and Robert F. Anderson
Limnol. Oceangr. 43:811-822 We compared oxygen isotopic profiles from authigenic calcite in nine freeze cores from Lake Turkana, Kenya, with the historical record of lake levels for the past 105 years. 210Pb dating of the cores indicates that sediment in two of the cores spans the complete historical record. We observed spatial variability in O and C values between cores and an offset from expected isotopic equilibrium values in several of the cores. Both of these characteristics can be explained by proximity to river input. In model calculations of lake level, we muted the spatial variability of the S1*O dataset by using a normalized and stacked record. There is good agreement between the lake level history modeled using the normalized and stacked record and the historical record of lake level. The lake level record derived from the O data indicates that lake level fluctuated by 15 m during the last century. Our model calculations indicate that

Undergraduate Program (additional information below) Career opportunities are available to professional geologists in industry (especially related to resource exploration and environmental concerns), education, urban planning, state and federal geological surveys, and government resource and research organizations. The master's degree is regarded by most hiring agencies as the working degree in geology. However, an undergraduate degree is fully satisfactory in certain teaching, federal, and industrial situations. Many of the University of Iowa's geoscience graduates find employment with resource companies, environmental corporations, and educational institutions. Others continue in graduate school or take jobs with government or conservation agencies. Some intend to enter law, business, or fields such as urban planning, environmental studies, engineering, archaeology, science education, or oceanography as advanced areas. Geoscience is good preparation for all of these. Each year more than 700 students enroll in 012:003 Earth History and Resources and 012:008 Introduction to Environmental Science, laboratory-lecture courses approved by the College of Liberal Arts for General Education in natural sciences.
