The Four Major Areas of Oceanography
Physics (Physical Oceanography) Oceanographers understand that the physics of the ocean is what controls the rest of the conditions in Earth's oceans, the chemical, biological and geological processes. Because they are so important, we will be looking at the water movements and other physical aspects of the oceans, especially waves, tides and the major ocean currents. Chemistry (Chemical Oceanography) We will be looking at the chemicals that fill the ocean basins...especially the water (where the mouse comes in), the salts and the gases, explore where they came from and how they play roles in marine organism and human activities.
Geology (Marine Geology) This portion looks at the oceanic container and especially what it is made up of, how it was and is being formed and how that has caused big changes on Earth over geologic time.
Biology (Marine Biology) This image of a Noctiluca (a dinoflagellate that in swarms of millions and causes a reddish color and a "glowing" of the sea) illustrates how our look at the biology of the oceans in this class will be confined to discussions of how life relates to the chemistry, geology and physics of the oceans; or vice-versa... This Noctiluca was "captured" from a mysterious red mass observed on a voyage of the Univ. of Washington's

Submit your questions for General Oceanography (Geol 109)
Note the change! The points will remain the same. For this routine assignment, you are to submit: ask and answer one short answer type of question about the most significant thing that you believe the other students should be able to answer from this classroom session.
The second question remains to be one that addresses a question that you still have, are confused about, or are missing something in your notes about a topic discussed during this class session.
Make sure that you indicate the date of the class and that you have submitted it before the beginning of the next class session.
(late submissions stamped with a mail server receipt after the start of the next class session will not be accepted) Name:(required but remains anonymous on the listing) Email:(required) Date of class: Question: Your answer to the question above: Your unanswered question:

The complete program announcement can be accessed on the Internet at http://www.epa.gov/ncerqa , under ``announcements.'' AWARDS: Final selection of awardees by the participating agencies will be determined on the basis of peer and panel recommendations, applicability of the proposed effort to the interests and objectives of an agency, and the availability of funds. It is anticipated that each award will be made and be administered by a single agency; however, several agencies may participate in providing assistance to individual components of multi-institutional projects. Applicants recommended for funding will be requested to resubmit their applications and may be asked to modify their budgets and/or work plans to comply with special requirements of the particular agency supporting their awards. Awards will be subject to the terms and conditions of the sponsoring agency. Oceanography Class Quilt
Art - Grades (all)
Teachers: This is an activity that each student can work on independently and still have their artwork become part of a whole culminating art project about the ocean life learned in class. In addition, by having each student create a quilt square, it breaks the monotony of regular art drawings of animals/environments studied in class. The completed quilt can become a permanent display. Objective : Students will create and observe a collage of oceanography topics that will be placed on quilt tiles in a culmination art project to represent information learned. Materials:
  • fabric squares (1 ft. x 1 ft.) fabric markers crayons (may be ironed in to make image permanent) tempera paint sewing needles and thread buttons, fabric, fringe scissors construction paper squares (1 ft. x 1 ft.) colored pencils
Activity:
  • The teacher must decided what medium of art the students will be working with.
    • a. Cutting and sewing images. c. Creating images with crayon and melted into the fabric with an iron. d. Use of construction paper instead of fabric and gluing images.

Hampton University, the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), and the National Science Foundation offer special opportunities for under-represented minority students (undergraduate and graduate) interested in aquatic sciences (oceanography, limnology, stream ecology, marine biology, fisheries, etc.). Minority students are provided full support (travel, housing, food, and registration) to participate in the annual meetings of ASLO. Students will gain valuable learning experiences and exposures to the most recent developments in the aquatic sciences. Participants make important professional contacts that will help them achieve academic and career objectives. Students will also receive a free membership in ASLO, including a subscription to the journal Limnology and Oceanography.
