Oceanography 1 General Information
Oceanography 1 is a survey of the materials, processes, and systems that affect the world ocean. Part 1 The Ocean Floor and Plate Tectonics The first portion of the course covers the relationship between Earth's interior structure and Earth's surface; the differences between continents and ocean basins (including why ocean basins are lower than continents); major features of the ocean floor; and the theory of plate tectonics. Part 2 Ocean Sediment and Ocean Chemistry The second major portion of the course deals with ocean sediments and ocean chemistry and the close relationships which exist between these topics. The effects that the atmosphere, land, and the ocean crust have on the chemistry of seawater are examined (which also involves a discussion of why the ocean is salty). The relationship between seawater chemistry and life is discussed, involving the effects that life in the ocean has on seawater chemistry, as well as the effects that ocean chemistry have on marine life. Part 3 How the Sun Affects the Ocean (Including Ocean Circulation) The third major part of the course is an examination of how the sun affects the ocean how solar radiation affects ocean temperature, salinity, seawater density, and the behavior of sound in the water. The effect that seawater has on the transmission of sunlight is also discussed. The relationships between atmospheric heating (the ocean is a major supplier of heat to the atmosphere), atmospheric circulation, and wind-driven ocean circulation are examined (including El Nino and La Nina), as is the relationship between surface climate and the deep water circulation of the ocean (thermohaline circulation).

LONG LIST
Interesting Sites in the U.S. Northeast:
Tools available to help you locate oceanographic data on the WWW are described below:
  • Global Change MASTER DIRECTORY (MD) provided by NASA.
MD is a search tool for finding oceanographic datasets available worldwide. While its focus is on datasets related to global change, this includes a great many datasets of general oceanographic interest. MD accesses information on the holdings of many data centers, which makes it a logical place to start before exploring individual data centers.
Note to students at URI GSO Bay Campus:
GSO Technical Report No. 95-1, entitled "Drinking from the Firehose: Global Change Datasets Available through Internet" provides guidance on the use of Master Directory.
  • The Oceanographic Society is developing a Distributed Ocean Data System, (DODS) to aid in the identification and sharing of oceanographic data, and which will be integrated with Master Directory.

SO231 General Oceanography Fall 2000 Temperature, Salinity, and Density in the Pacific Ocean If you need help with the computer programs, note that there is help available and that it has an index which you can S earch. You should understand the following after this lab: a. Variation in surface water temperature with latitude. b. East-west variation in surface water temperature in the major ocean basins. c. The variation in salinity and temperature in the deep isothermal layer throughout the Pacific. d. Latitudinal trends in the thickness of the mixed surface layer and thermocline, and in the depth to the sound channel. e. Latitudinal variation in the water column on a T-S diagram. This lab is a precursor to two that will deal with geostrophic currents, probably the hardest concept in this course. Insure that you understand what we are doing in this lab or you will be in trouble later. MCSST Map Use the SST-CZCS program to look at a map of MCSST (multi-channel sea surface temperature) for the month on August. This map comes from the AVHRR instrument on NOAA's polar orbiting satellites.

SO231 General Oceanography 1 Fall 2000 TIDES LAB We will use the TIDES computer program for this lab. After completing this lab, you should be able to interpret graphs of tidal records and understand the following: Relationship of the moon phase and declination to tropical, equatorial, spring and neap tides. Tidal range and diurnal inequality. Diurnal, mixed, and semi-diurnal tides. The time between successive tides. Storm surges. Partial tides. Open the program and select Moon animation, Both. You can control the animation (Pause, Stop, and vary the Time Step) using the Moon animation menu choice. a. Look at the top view. What is the effect of the moon phase on the observed tide? b. Next look at the side view. What is the effect of the moon’s declination on the tide? c. Are these two processes in phase with each other? (You could use the Jump option to move to a particular day to see if every month looks the same.) The F ratio (K +O ) / (M +S ) determines the type of tide at a station. Herodotus map of world,

modified from Singer, 1921 About this time, however, observations of natural phenomena related to the seas and oceans began to be written down. Herodotus, around 450 BC, wrote of the regular tides in the Persian Gulf, the deposition of silt in the Nile Delta, and uses the term "Atlantic" for the first time to describe the western seas. In the fourth century, the Phocaean colonists of Massila (Marseilles), sent the Greek astronomer Pytheas on a voyage out of the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar), where he traveled to Britain, Germany, and the Baltic Sea. He describes conditions in a distant far northern sea, which may have been in the Arctic (he describes it as having a 24 hour day at the summer solstice), as thick and gelatinous like a jellyfish (these waters are at times thick with gelatinous organisms of various kinds). " I found no basis prepared; no models to copy... Mine is the first step, and therefore a small one, though worked out with much thought and hard labor. It must be looked at as a first step and judged with indulgence."
