Atlas of the Ocean: The Deep Frontier

If you are looking for a coffee book with excellent illustrations I would definately recommend this book. Should you wish to read it I would hesitate on recommending it. The text is disjointed and the main topic of a paragraph is often confused with numerous (tentatively linked) topics. Issues are readdressed time and time again, which leads me to think the book is more a series of strung together papers rather than a well thought out book. However, if you don't mind that, the book does intr... more...

World Data Center (WDC) for Oceanography is one component of a global network of discipline subcenters that facilitate international exchange of scientific data. Originally established during the International Geophysical Year of 1957-58, the World Data Center System functions under the guidance of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). WDC for Oceanography, Silver Spring, is collocated with, and operated by, the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC). In accordance with principles set forth by ICSU, WDC for Oceanography acquires, catalogues, and archives data, publications, and data inventory forms and makes them available to requesters in the international scientific community. To improve user access, the WDC provides copies of data it receives to its counterparts, World Data Center for Oceanography (Obninsk, Russia) and World Data Center for Oceanography (Tianjin, China). Oceanographic data contributed to the WDC become automatically available to scientific investigators in any country. Thus, there can be no restrictions or limitations placed on data exchanged through the WDC system. However, for certain types of data, the exchange of inventories of available data in a WDC subcenter may be considered acceptable in lieu of the transfer of the actual data sets.

How deep is the ocean? Where can I get bathymetry data and bathymetric maps?
The depth of the ocean is remarkably variable, from the surf zones at the world's beaches to the deep ocean trenches. The deepest point in the ocean is generally believed to be in the Marianas Trench in the Western Pacific Ocean at approximately 36,160 feet [11,021 m], according to the Rand McNally Atlas of the Oceans (1977). A bathymetric map depicts the topography of the ocean floor. Bathymetric maps - as well as the digital bathymetry data from which they are produced - are distributed by the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center's

San Diego State University provides preparation for ocean-oriented careers by offering marine-related coursework and oceanographic experience within regular degree programs in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Geography, Geological Sciences, Natural Science, and Physics. Master's degrees with specialization in marine problems may also be earned in these departments. The Ph.D. degree is offered in biology, chemistry, and ecology, jointly with the University of California. Degrees in general oceanography or marine studies are not offered by the University. The Coastal and Marine Institute coordinates work in the area of marine studies and provides special supporting services to the faculty, staff and students, including student advising, assistance in research and publication, operation of the University's marine laboratory at Mission Bay, and a boat operations program. Courses in general oceanography are offered by faculty from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Geological Sciences. Advanced coursework and research in geological and physical oceanography are conducted in the Geological Sciences Department. An option in marine geology is offered as part of the undergraduate major in geological sciences, and the Chemistry Department offers work in chemical oceanography. Advanced courses and research in biological oceanography, marine biology, marine botany, and marine zoology are conducted in the Department of Biology. Similar marine-related coursework and research are offered in the Departments of Economics and Geography and in the College of Engineering. Students who require advising in these areas should inquire at the Coastal and Marine Institute. (See section of this catalog on Academic Organization, College of Sciences Research Centers.)

    http://oceanography.palomar.edu/links/Careers.html
Careers in Oceanography Many people associate careers in oceanography as consisting of swimming with marine animals at a marine life park or snorkeling in crystal-clear tropical waters studying coral reefs. In reality, these kinds of jobs are extremely rare and there is intense competition for the few jobs that do exist. Most oceanographers work in fields that use science to solve a particular problem in the ocean. Some examples include:
    • What is the role of the ocean in limiting the greenhouse effect? What kinds of pharmaceuticals can be found naturally in marine organisms? How does sea-floor spreading relate to the movement of tectonic plates? What economic deposits are there on the sea floor? Can rogue waves be predicted? What is the role of longshore transport in the distribution of sand on the beach? How does a particular pollutant affect organisms in the marine environment?
Preparation for a Career in Oceanography
Preparing yourself for a career in oceanography is probably one of the most interesting and rewarding (yet difficult) paths to travel. The study of oceanography is typically divided into different academic disciplines (or sub-fields) of study. The four main disciplines of oceanography are:
    • Geological oceanography is the study of the structure of the sea floor and how the sea floor has changed through time; the creation of sea floor features; and the history of sediments deposited on it.

Its programs include the Marine Mammal Research Program (MMRP), the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TMMSN), and the Sea Turtle Biology and Fisheries Ecology Research Programs. Dr. Bernd Wursig leads MMRP which studies cetaceans and sirenians that populate the Gulf of Mexico and the world's oceans. The program integrates behavioral, physiological, and population data from live-animal studies with toxicological information obtained from dead mammals in order to understand environmental effects on marine mammal health. Wursig works with students in the COASTCET branch of MMRP to identify and track bottlenose dolphins along Texas shores. The three-year GULFCET program led by Dr. Randall Davis, sponsored by the Minerals Management Service, surveys dolphin and whale populations in the Gulf of Mexico. Oceanographic data from satellites and hydrographic surveys help identify habitats while researchers in planes and boats track cetaceans.

    Who We Are
The Department of Oceanography is a research-oriented, graduate-only department within the School of Arts and Sciences. We are located in the Oceanography-Statistics building on the main FSU campus in Tallahassee, Florida. Our 18 faculty members offer specialized graduate courses and more general undergraduate courses in oceanography. They also guide the research of our students while conducting their own. The department is of a size that it forms a cohesive group, with an important sense of camaraderie amongst graduate students and faculty. The interdisciplinary nature of oceanography leads to intra- and interdepartmental approaches to research and instruction.
    What We Do
    What is Oceanography?
Oceanography is in some sense a misnomer. The word itself tempts one into thinking that oceanography represents a single well-defined discipline, with traditions and methods that stand apart from those of the more classical sciences. In reality, oceanography consists of the application of the basic disciplines of biology, chemistry, geology, math, and physics to the seas. For example
