To establish the theories and system for sustainable and effective use of fisheries resources, our institute promotes the subjects to crarify the marine production system and fisheries resources biology, the technique for stock assessment and fisheries management, and the technology on multifaceted and highly utilize of fisheries organisms. We also promotes the subject to develope local fisheries industries. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES F Elucidation of the ecology and stock assessment on the pelagic fishes such as sardine and mackerel, evaluation and establishment of the management system on fisheries.

Populations of Peruvian Seabirds Plummeted Due to Increased Fishing Activity, Study Says

Authors show guano birds declined because food source was depleted by 85 percent
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the tens of millions of marine birds living in the "Bird Islands of Peru" became famous around the world. This was due to their appeal as a visual spectacle and because they became economically important as high producers of guano, droppings that the country mined and exported around the world for fertilizer. Research in physical oceanography
Our primary research interests are in describing the state of the global ocean in space and time and understanding the dynamic and thermodynamic processes that maintain this state. Ultimately, we are motivated to understand the ocean's role in Earth's climate and the physical analogies between the ocean and other planetary atmospheres.
Coupled ocean-atmosphere modelling
A variety of models are used for studying the interaction between the atmosphere and oceans. This interaction is strongest in the tropical regions, particularly over the Pacific ocean, where it gives rise to `El Nino' conditions and leads to climate variability on time-scales of a few months to a few years. The ultimate object of our work is to test the predictability of the tropical ocean-atmosphere system. Our models range from fully comprehensive models of the atmosphere and ocean to models of intermediate complexity that retain only the essential physics. In addition, models are being used to understand the nature of the decadal variability of the wind-driven and thermohaline circulations of the ocean and their climate manifestations. Much of the work is carried out in collaboration with other major modelling centres.
General circulation of the ocean
Understanding the key mechanisms controlling the rate at which the ocean interior is refreshed by surface water is a critical issue facing oceanographers interested in climate. A blend of methods is used to approach this problem, including numerical models of the oceanic circulation on parallel computers, observations of dissolved transient tracers (CFCs and radiosotopes) from research cruises and non-linear statistical techniques. The combination leads to improved knowledge of the general ciruculation of the ocean and exchange with the atmosphere and hence enhanced understanding of the ocean's role in shaping the Earth's climate.

The OCCAM global ocean model
The OCCAM project has developed several high resolution models of the World Ocean - including the Arctic Ocean and marginal seas such as the Mediterranean. Some early results from our highest resolution (1/12th degree) global model are available in poster form . The information on this page refers chiefly to our earlier, 1/4 and 1/8th degree global models. The project is being carried out by researchers at the Southampton Oceanography Centre in collaboration with colleagues from the Universities of East Anglia and Edinburgh. A selection of animation sequences from the model are available for viewing (using quicktime and mpeg formats). Two 4 Mb Quicktime movies which show the global ocean surface temperature field can be downloaded. More detailed mpeg sequences, each covering a smaller area, may be selected via the OCCAM area selector . Features of special interest are :
  • Eddies in the Agulhas retroflection and Mozambique Channel region
  • Loop current eddies in the Gulf of Mexico
  • Regular eddies in the Celebes Sea/Mindanao region
Data from the OCCAM model can be requested using the OCCAM data selector . This runs a JAVA applet which allows the user to request data from an area of interest. People using the facility should ensure that the current internet browser they are running will display JAVA applets. The system is currently under development so only a limited amount of data is available via this route.
