CAS Standard Abbreviations and Acronyms
Introduction
In both printed CA Issues and Indexes and computer-readable services, certain abbreviations and acronyms are automatically generated for terms in the abstract text, the keyword phrases, and the text modifying phrases for index entries. Most of these abbreviations have been used prior to 1982. Users of computer-readable services need to know these standard abbreviations and acronyms in order to be able to use them in search profiles and identify them in text. In this document, automatically generated abbreviations and acronyms in CAS publications and services are arranged in three lists. To guide users to abbreviations they need to include in their search profiles, Listing A is arranged in the alphabetical order of the full terms which are abbreviated. Do not use periods when searching CAS abbreviations or acronyms online. To provide explanation of abbreviations encountered in text, Listing B is arranged in the alphabetical order of abbreviations and acronyms.

INTRODUCTION More than two centuries ago Ohio was carved out of the wilderness of the Old Northwest Territory. As we now prepare to celebrate Ohio's Statehood Bicentennial, it is fitting that The Ohio Academy of Science look back over these past 200 years to reflect on Ohio's contribution to science and technology. These contributions manifest themselves in at least four ways: (1) natural features or events of scientific interest that have helped us understand principles and processes, (2)

THE PRESIDENT'S FORUM
THE DREAM, THE REALITY, THE FUTURE
On the other hand, pessimists can take this as evidence of a poor selection of person to replace the immediate Past President, Dale Buckley, one of the founders of our young organization, but I suspect that's a myopic way of looking at things. It seems to me that Dale's decision to look outside of the existing Executive for his replacement was a good one, looking for fresh input from the general membership. Obviously, it's far too early to determine the worth of that approach. Instead, let me offer some thoughts based upon my observations of almost three years as a regular member of the BIO-OA and the past nine months as a member of its executive body. The start for me, personally, was applause for the concept and initiation of a 'BIO-Oceans Association'. What an incredible idea! Does a more worthy tribute exist to honour the Institute and its original founders than this? I think not, particularly when reviewing the grand role that BIO has played in the development of the ocean sciences, both nationally and internationally, and its contribution worldwide. But equally significant, is the opportunity that BIO provided to each and every one of us during our tenure, past and present, to participate and excel as workers in our various roles. In fact, the time has come to jump forward with both feet to further identify what we can do to repay the Institute for what it has given to us over the years and what it represents to Canadians everywhere. A 'jump' that can be enjoyable as well as self-satisfying.

THE PRESIDENT'S FORUM
It is difficult to comprehend that two years have passed since I assumed the presidency of BIO-OA. My perspective is that this is the end of the second chapter in a long and enjoyable book. A review of this chapter reveals that we have made considerable progress in developing our character and plotting our course. Over the past two years we have made some considerable progress in raising interest in preserving historical aspects of BIO. We now have the beginnings of a paper archive in the library, thanks in large part to Carole Broome and other library staff. The library now has an Archivist/ Librarian, Marilynn Rudi. We also have a desk and "office" that can be used for reviewing and cataloguing photographs that are of historical interest to BIO. Under Mike Gorveatt's supervision, an equipment or hardware archive storage area has been established and will be maintained by Bruce Wile (NRCan). On the social calendar we note that we had some great success in having a number of members participate in the canal boat tour in England (2000), and we have found that a good number of members enjoy our summer picnic gatherings. We also note that our lectures with wine and cheese at BIO during the winter have been well attended. Establishment of the Beluga Recognition Award, and presentation of the first award to Roger Belanger in 2001 was a highlight. Stay tuned: there are more to come. We are most pleased that many of our members and the current staff of BIO have very positively endorsed this award and the criteria for selection of the recipients.

[geonet] letter to: AGU, fr: 3 @ Scripps Inst Oceanography, re: DOI citation
25 April 2002 To: Marcia McNutt, AGU President From: Ralph Keeling, Jeff Severinghaus, Peter Brueggeman CC: AGU Executive Committee, AGU Publications Committee Dear Marcia, It has recently come to our attention that, in its move towards online publishing, AGU has done away with sequential page numbering of journal articles as of January 2002. Instead, AGU is requiring articles to be cited based on a 20-digit character string (e.g. 10.1029/2001JA001490), known as a digital object identifier (DOI), and disallowing current scientific practice wherein articles are cited by volume, issue, and page numbers. The cited benefits of AGU's new system include the ability to improve online access, the flexibility to submit videos or other multi-media materials as part of an article, and the ability to provide electronic links to other articles or pieces.
