news Oceanographer has been busy with secret plotting in a dark underground room since February (when the band got into a practice space). Now the first live appearances in eight months are lined up for April: Friday the 9th at Pete's Candy Story in Brooklyn (free) and Wednesday the 28th at the Knitting Factory Also to look forward to: the ever-delayed release of the upcoming LP, rumors of another EP to be released shortly before or after that, and the Twenty String EP in stores near you. Happy New Year to everyone, hope your holidays were great. Thanks to KDGE's Josh Venable and the Adventure Club for giving Oceanographer the #6 slot on his year-end countdown Everyone's finally in Brooklyn, searching for jobs and getting used to the city. It will be awhile before they'll play any shows, practice spaces are hard to come by up here. If you know of any let us know Oceanographer is probably playing on the radio near you, check out the list of stations to see where you can hear the band in your area. Give 'em a call and put in a request while you're waiting for everyone to get out and play again.

Data Explorer Tutorials
Data Explorer (DX) is a software package for the visualization of data. Put simply, it turns those thousands of numbers in a data set into an image thus allowing an easier understanding of the information. NOTE : At the time of writing, this package was available within Dalhousie Physical Oceanography only on our IBM RISC System/6000 machines. Although Data Explorer is an easy package to learn to use, tutorials have been created that let you quickly learn some of the basics. Although this tutorial was designed for users at Dalhousie Physical Oceanography, it was be useful to other DX users as well. Videos on Creating Visual Programs and Data Importing and Module Writing are available. The IBM Visualization Data Explorer manuals ( User's Guide User's Reference , and Programmer's Reference ) are also available. Data Explorer has a extensive on-line help facility, which is basically a copy of the User's Reference . This can be accesses by pressing the middle mouse button on a module or any window. NERC science has key role in ground-breaking NASA mission
$812m Aura satellite's unprecedented study of Earth's atmosphere NERC scientists will play a key role in a new NASA mission to provide the most detailed examination yet of the Earth's atmosphere and ozone layer. Colin Hicks, Director General of the British National Space Centre, said today:
"This is an important mission which will provide an insight into health hazards caused by deteriorating air quality in towns and cities across the globe. It will enable scientists to get the clearest understanding yet of climate change and an insight into its causes. "Information derived by HIRDLS will be used to assess the impact of a range of natural and man-made activities, including air travel, volcanic eruptions and the movement and concentration of greenhouse gases on a daily basis. "Through HIRDLS, the UK is contributing ground-breaking science and engineering to this mission. It is a tribute to our traditional strengths in the field of remote sensing using space satellites."
