What is Oceanography
Who are Oceanographers?

Oceanographers study all aspects of the seas. That's a big topic, too much for one person! There are subgroups of oceanographers - four main ones in all. Some focus on the ocean's physical processes such as currents or interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere. Some study the chemistry of seawater, analyzing its components and properties. Others study the ocean's biology, and how oceanic conditions control the distribution and abundance of marine organisms. Still others focus on the geology of the ocean floor from the coastline to the abyssal plains.

Oceanographic research ships are as varied as the types of research conducted from them. In a shallow estuary, researchers can jump over the side of a small speed boat to collect sediment samples. In polar waters, larger ships with hulls reinforced against ice are a very good idea!
The Colours of the Ocean
The "color" of the ocean is determined by the interactions of incident light with substances or particles present in the water. The most significant constituents are free-floating photosynthetic organisms (phytoplankton) and inorganic particulates. Phytoplankton contain chlorophyll, which absorbs light at blue and red wavelengths and transmits in the green. Particulate matter can reflect and absorb light, which reduces the clarity (light transmission) of the water. Substances dissolved in water can also affect its color.

Last modified: Wed Jan 28 13:56:35 2004 Howdy. This is a journal of sorts about how I am adapting my Mac OS X machine to work with the GNU and Unixy tools which I consider standard for earth sciences. All of this stuff works natively under Linux, and therefore should be portable to Darwin systems. Please email me with comments, suggestions, tirades.

AUXILIARIST ASSISTS NAVAL OCEANOGRAPHERS
Burnie Radosh on Watch
Throughout the better part of the month of January, Auxiliarist Burnie Radosh, Flotilla 36, D7, performed an unheralded service for the US Navy. On a daily basis, Bernie took 4 US Naval Officers and 1 British Naval Officer, all oceanographers, out on his vessel, the Auxiliary Operational Facility Nerissa . While aboard, the oceanographers performed various and sundry studies of the near-shore, coastal waters of Florida. Up front it should be noted that the Nerissa is a 41' sailing catamaran Lt. Cdr. Don Ventura, British Royal Navy, said, "Each day is a different study. Depending on the weather, the study could last up to two weeks." As an example, one day was spent running parallel tracks close to the shoreline while the Navy deployed a drogue equipped with side scan sonar to map the bottom.
Split Screen Display Auxiliarist Hal Leahy, Flotilla 51, D7, acted as a crewmember on one of the patrols. "We ran our patrol for over 10 hours that day and I found out, after it was over, that it was one of the shortest Burnie had run," he said. "Back and forth, back and forth we ran. The patrol displaced any doubts I may have had about sailboats and their use as operational facilities. If I can, I want to go out again on patrol with Burnie," said Hal. The Commanding Officer (C.O.) of Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale provided a major assist to both the CG Auxiliary and the Navy by allowing Burnie to berth his vessel at their docks during the operation. The off shore activity required a crew of two plus the coxswain and the CG Station C.O. offered, if needed, active duty personnel to fill in as crew.

Great Resource for Careers in Science This book is not my usual genre to spend time on, however, I felt immediately drawn into the adventure and mystery of the ocean. Trupp talks about science being remote from citizens and therefore the need exists for scientists to communicate more effectively with the public. This he demonstrates in his book, taking the reader on a wild ride populated by extaordinary characters and exotic settings. As a teacher, I found this book very helpful because it broadened my knowledge of adventurous jobs that await students of biology and science. I was able to use some of the vignettes in Trupp's work to transmit a bit of the romance involved in being in the scientific world, something I've not found easy to do in the past. Read and enjoy the rapture of the deep! provides a window on what makes ocean explorers tick We often read about discoveries, but little about those who put in the hard work. Sea of Dreamers offers a view of the discoverers and what motivates them. A man with his own undersea castle, a "shark lady," a woman submarine pilot...these are fascinating people with fascinating ideas. I am also impressed by the politics of ocean science and the controversy surrounding the proposal to bury nuclear and chemical wastes in the sea. This is the first time this subject has been dealt with from the insider's point-of-view. It is amazing that late in our own century this subject has become politically incorrect, that we won't even allow free discussion and debate. Science is supposed to be apolitical; this book reveals the opposite. In all, the title provides visions on many levels and should be read by anyone with an interest in the oceans, what we know (which is apparently very little) and what remains to be found in this hidden world which emcompasses most of our planet.

Position Announcements
Oceanographers
The Washington State Department of Ecology is soliciting applications for two positions as Oceanographers in the Environmental Assessment Program, Olympia, WA. The program provides monitoring and analysis of marine water properties in Puget Sound and coastal estuaries of Washington.
The primary responsibilities of one position include analysis and interpretation of basic oceanographic data and it's relation to marine water quality issues. The candidate will also provide a leadership role in the design of monitoring networks (both in-water and satellite remote sensing) and execution of focused field projects. Responsibilities of the other position are to assist with a multi-year grant regarding modeling, database maintenance, and data analysis for physical, chemical, and biological data, as well as focused field work using moored instruments. Applicants should possess a MS or PhD degree in oceanography or related environmental science.
Applicants for both positions should have experience working with and maintaining large data sets, conducting statistical analyses of environmental data and evaluating spatial and temporal trends, and producing technical reports and scientific manuscripts. Proficiency with standard PC applications including MS Excel and Access is required, and the ability to use common scientific software (e.g. Matlab, IDL, ArcView) is highly preferred. Additional skills should include extensive familiarity with the use (maintenance, calibration, deployment) of common oceanographic equipment (e.g. CTDs, ADCPs), basic water sampling protocols, and standard laboratory analyses. Experience working with radioactive tracers and conducting primary production assays and knowledge of ocean optics/remote sensing are highly desirable.

US Navy Press Releases

In the fictional novel and movie "The Hunt for Red October," the search for the Soviet warhead-packed submarine required information provided by Navy oceanographic ships. For the last 50 years, Navy oceanographers have filled huge databases with information bottom bathymetry, deep ocean current patterns, biology tows, temperature and salinity profiles to find submarines in the world's vast deep oceans. These days, the fresh salt air Navy oceanographers breath is a little closer to shore because Navy oceanographic ships are changing course and turning toward land. Increasingly mindful that the likely focus of naval operations are now unpredictable adversaries operating in shallow waters near shorelines and not in the world's deep waters, Chief of Naval Operations ADM Mike Boorda signed a new policy directing Navy oceanographers to start looking more closely at the complex marine science of near-shore areas. This is the first such revision in naval oceanography policy in 10 years. There is a renewed concentration on the complicated problems that make up the science of the littoral, or near-shore areas: tidal pulses, beach profiles, reefs, bars, shallows, shoals, channels, sediment transport, fine-scale hydrography, turbidity, land cover and terrain, dust, traffic, rain rates, river run-off, sub-bottom terrain and the complex weather patterns of coastal areas.
