http://www.glacier.rice.edu/oceans/4_meetoceanographer.html
Oceanographers study all aspects of the seas. That's a big topic, too much for one person! There are subgroups of oceanographers - four main ones in all. Some focus on the ocean's physical processes such as currents or interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere. Some study the chemistry of seawater, analyzing its components and properties. Others study the ocean's biology, and how oceanic conditions control the distribution and abundance of marine organisms. Still others focus on the geology of the ocean floor from the coastline to the abyssal plains.
Does the above list do a good job of describing all the possible types of oceanographers? No! Oceanographers need to be conversant a wide variety of scientific disciplines. Researchers concentrating on one part of ocean science must be aware of its other aspects - otherwise, they won't be able to correctly interpret their data or to work well with other oceanographers. A dizzying array of descriptors is used to describe crosslinkages between fields. For example, a biogeochemical oceanographer might be primarily a geologist who also knows a lot of biology and chemistry. Such a person might study how the metabolic processes of organisms living in the sediment affect the sediment and control the return of certain chemical constituents to the overlying seawater.
So now we see that oceanographers are a diverse group. How they gather information from the ocean is just as diverse and depends on what types of questions are being asked by which type of researcher. Let's take a quick look at what these various sorts of people might be up to!

New map of Earth's gravity field from Grace data
Image details

The joint NASA-German Aerospace Center Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (Grace) mission has released its first science product, the most accurate map yet of Earth’s gravity field. Grace is the newest tool for scientists working to unlock secrets of ocean circulation and its effects on climate. Created from 111 days of selected Grace data to help calibrate and validate the mission’s instruments, this preliminary model improves knowledge of the gravity field so much it is being released to oceanographers now, months in advance of the scheduled start of routine Grace science operations. The data are expected to significantly improve our ability to understand ocean circulation, which strongly influences weather and climate. Dr. Byron Tapley, Grace principal investigator at the University of Texas’ Center for Space Research, called the new model a feast for oceanographers. “This initial model represents a major advancement in our knowledge of Earth’s gravity field,” Tapley said. “Pre-Grace models contained such large errors many important features were obscured. Grace brings the true state of the oceans into much sharper focus, so we can better see ocean phenomenon that have a strong impact on atmospheric weather patterns, fisheries and global climate change.”

12 August 2003 Oceanographers converge on Monterey Bay
MOSS LANDING—Oceanographers from more than a dozen prestigious research institutions have converged on Monterey Bay this month to examine the bay as never before, collaborating in a unique research experiment. They have come together as part of the Autonomous Ocean Sampling Network (AOSN) program, funded by the Office of Naval Research. This multidisciplinary project is being coordinated and hosted by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in Moss Landing. The AOSN 2003 Monterey Field Experiment brings together physical oceanographers, marine biologists, computer modeling experts, and engineers who design robots for undersea research. This diverse group is studying the bay using cutting-edge computer models and high-tech observational tools such as satellites, airplanes, ships, drifters, buoys, autonomous underwater vehicles, and an entire fleet of undersea gliders. The researchers are using these tools to observe and predict the upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water that occurs off Monterey Bay during the summer months. These upwelling events create blooms of marine plankton that support the abundant fisheries and other wildlife in and around the bay. The Autonomous Ocean Sampling Network (AOSN) Monterey 2003 Field Experiment involves several ships and dozens of floating, diving, and flying oceanographic instruments operating simultaneously. Their goal is to observe and model water movement, temperature, and other upwelling-related processes in Monterey Bay over a 4-week period during August, 2003. In this image of the Monterey Bay study area, the color of the ocean surface indicates water temperaturecold upwelling water is shown in blue and warmer water in yellow and red.

    60. Biological Oceanographers Examine ’regime Shifts’ In Complex Marine Ecosystems

"Regime shifts" are infrequent, large changes in oceanic conditions that spread through the food web. Depending on dynamics of the ecosystem, the response of a biological organism to some external forcing can be smooth, abrupt, or discontinuous.
In a paper published in the current issue of Progress in Oceanography, Dr. Jeremy Collie, University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, Dr. Katherine Richardson, University of Arhus, Denmark, and Dr. John Steele, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, examine the mechanisms that can cause regime shifts in ecosystems and use oceanographic and ecological theory to shed light on the relationships between forcing and response variables.
The focus of the paper is to establish a theoretical basis for the occurrence of regime shifts in the ocean. Our understanding of regime shifts relies on observations of organisms and their marine environment taken on times scales of years and decades. Given the size, scope and interrelatedness of marine ecosystems, experimental manipulation is infeasible. Ecological theory and mathematical models are therefore essential tools for developing this understanding.
Regime shifts can occur, for example, when changes in ocean conditions, such as warming, affect plankton production, an event that easily propagates up the food chain. Changes in ocean conditions can also affect migration patterns, growth rates, and mortality of fish species.
