External Links What do Oceanographers do? Oceanographers are scientists who apply physics, chemistry, biology and geology to the study of the world ocean - its currents, tides and circulation; the creatures which live in the oceans; the rocks that lie underneath the ocean; and the places where the ocean meets the atmosphere and the coast.
Understanding these things helps governments to look after the oceans properly - for example by controlling pollution, ensuring that fishing boats don't catch all of the young fish before they have a chance to grow, and making sure that the beaches you visit on your holidays are clean and safe to use. A very important job for oceanographers is climate research. The ocean has a great effect on the world's climate because the sea stores so much heat - oceanographers can help to predict future changes in the temperature of the planet, and also to give warning of sea level changes.
The main types of oceanographers are physical oceanographers , who look at temperature, density, saltiness, tides, currents and waves;

Oceanographers
Job Description:
Oceanographers study the world’s oceans and coastal waters. They study the motion and circulation of the ocean waters and their physical and chemical properties, and how these properties affect coastal areas, climate, and weather. The work of an oceanographer involves conducting studies on samples collected from seas, planning sea trips, and teaching. However, much of it depends upon the area of specialisation that one chooses. Being essentially a research–oriented profession, long periods are spent at the sea with all its challenges and hazards. Oceanographers work in several fields, such as, Geological Oceanography and Physical Oceanography. Chemical Oceanography deals with the composition and quality of water. They study the effects of pollutants on oceans and work on projects for treatment of industrial solid and sewage waste. Their work is of special relevance today in view of the growing level of pollution. Geological Oceanography deals with the geological study of the ocean floor and sedimentations. Such studies help in deciding location for marine structures as well as in exploitation of mineral resources of the ocean.

University of Rhode Island
Biological oceanographers examine 'regime shifts' in complex marine ecosystems
"Regime shifts" are infrequent, large changes in oceanic conditions that spread through the food web. Depending on dynamics of the ecosystem, the response of a biological organism to some external forcing can be smooth, abrupt, or discontinuous. In a paper published in the current issue of Progress in Oceanography, Dr. Jeremy Collie, University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, Dr. Katherine Richardson, University of Arhus, Denmark, and Dr. John Steele, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, examine the mechanisms that can cause regime shifts in ecosystems and use oceanographic and ecological theory to shed light on the relationships between forcing and response variables. The focus of the paper is to establish a theoretical basis for the occurrence of regime shifts in the ocean. Our understanding of regime shifts relies on observations of organisms and their marine environment taken on times scales of years and decades. Given the size, scope and interrelatedness of marine ecosystems, experimental manipulation is infeasible. Ecological theory and mathematical models are therefore essential tools for developing this understanding. Regime shifts can occur, for example, when changes in ocean conditions, such as warming, affect plankton production, an event that easily propagates up the food chain. Changes in ocean conditions can also affect migration patterns, growth rates, and mortality of fish species.

URI oceanographers investigate link between last Ice Age and Indonesian volcanic eruptions
Approximately 75,000 years ago, a massive explosive eruption from a volcano in western Indonesia (Toba caldera) coincided with the onset of the Earth's last Ice Age. In the current issue of Geology, University of Rhode Island geological oceanographers Meng-Yang Lee and Steven Carey; Chang-Hwa Chen and Yoshiyuki Iizuka of the Academia Sinica in Taiwan; and Kuo-Yen Wei of National Taiwan University describe their investigation into the possibility that eruptions from the Toba caldera on the island of Sumatra caused a severe "volcanic winter" and the initiation of a glacial period. The magnitude of the oldest Toba eruptions had not previously been documented due to the difficulty in recognizing their widespread erupted products in marine sediments. Lee and the team of scientists present new data on the distribution of volcanic ash from the oldest Toba eruption in Ocean Drilling Program cores and piston cores in the South China Sea and Indian Ocean. By using high-resolution litho-, magneto-, and oxygen isotope stratigraphic records, the geologists were able to clarify the correlation between distribution patterns in the cores, refine the age of the layers, and reestimate the eruptive volume of the early eruption of Toba. The results of their analysis indicate that the glass shards from the first Toba eruption 788,000 years ago were dispersed more than 2000 miles from the source. Fallout from the eruption was deposited from clouds that drifted over both the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, producing an extensive ash blanket that may have been comparable in size to that of the last Toba eruption 75,000 years ago.

Nature of the Work About this section Top Geologists, geophysicists, and oceanographers use their knowledge of the physical makeup and history of the Earth to locate water, mineral, and energy resources; protect the environment; predict future geologic hazards; and offer advice on construction and land use projects. By using sophisticated instruments and analyses of the Earth and water, geological scientists, also known as geoscientists Geology, geophysics, and oceanography are closely related fields; but there are major differences. Geologists study the composition, processes, and history of the Earth. They try to find out how rocks were formed and what has happened to them since formation. They also study the evolution of life by analyzing plant and animal fossils. Geophysicists Oceanographers Many geologists, geophysicists and oceanographers are involved in the search for oil and gas, but other geological scientists play an important role in preserving and cleaning up the environment. Activities include designing and monitoring waste disposal sites, preserving water supplies, and reclaiming contaminated land and water to comply with Federal environmental regulations.

Juvenile winter flounder and sand shrimp
Oceanographers study the predator-prey relationship
While the stock of winter flounder as a whole is recovering from overexploitation, the populations in Narragansett Bay and in the Niantic River remain depleted. Elevated water temperature seems to be the culprit, elevating the metabolism and consumption rate of predators that feast on the juvenile flounder. One predator that seems to be having a negative impact on the survival of flounder is the sand shrimp. URI Oceanography Professor Jeremy Collie has received a $40,000 grant from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration to study the effects of water temperature on predator-prey interaction in Narragansett Bay and the Niantic River and determine why the stock of winter flounder continues to decline. The common sand shrimp lives in the Atlantic waters from Newfoundland to Florida and is an important component of estuarine systems, serving as both predator and prey. Elevated winter water temperature may increase the number of sand shrimp simply because warmer temperatures allow greater numbers to survive the winter.

Oceanographers studying the effects of algal blooms on Narragansett Bay ecology
Graduate School of Oceanography biological oceanographers Ted Smayda and David Borkman have received a $131,800 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to analyze the dynamics, variability, and patterns of harmful algal blooms and red tides in Narragansett Bay. The study will include analysis of data from weekly measurements in lower Narragansett Bay conducted between 1959 and 1996, as well as field observations, laboratory analysis, and detailed information on key species. The incidence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) is on the rise. They are now appearing in regions previously free from such events, and toxic outbreaks of species once considered benign are threatening marine life, shellfish, and humans. Research on algal blooms is difficult to conduct because the blooms are unpredictable and swift, often disappearing so fast that meaningful field studies are impossible.
