International Year of the Ocean

The Ocean is vital to life on earth. From the life-giving rain that nourishes crops, to life-saving medicines; from the fish that come from the ocean floor, to the goods that are transported on the sea's surface - the ocean plays a role in your life in some way every day. In recognition of the importance of the marine environment, the United Nations has declared 1998 the International Year of the Ocean (YOTO). This designation provides individual organizations and governments with an important opportunity to raise public awareness and understanding of the ocean and related issues.

A large number of educational materials have either been developed specifically for the Ocean Planet Exhibition, or have been developed for other purposes but are a good complement to the materials presented in the Exhibition. If the materials are available in electronic form, you can retrieve them for use in your classroom. We will continue to add new materials as they become available. How deep is the ocean? Where can I get bathymetry data and bathymetric maps?
The depth of the ocean is remarkably variable, from the surf zones at the world's beaches to the deep ocean trenches. The deepest point in the ocean is generally believed to be in the Marianas Trench in the Western Pacific Ocean at approximately 36,160 feet [11,021 m], according to the Rand McNally Atlas of the Oceans (1977). A bathymetric map depicts the topography of the ocean floor. Bathymetric maps - as well as the digital bathymetry data from which they are produced - are distributed by the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center's

Teaching Ocean Life in Elementary Schools Fiorella Rosillo Introduction I teach in the Santa Ana Unified School District, which is 98-99% Latino. I teach a group of twenty first-grade students in a Structured English Immersion (SEI) classroom, which means that the students are considered Limited English Speaking and teachers are allowed, for a small percentage of the time, to use the students' native language for instruction. The students' mastery over the English language varies considerably. Of the students that were born in the United States, some are very limited in English while others are very fluent. Also, we receive many students that have just come from another country and do not speak or understand any English. Since many of our students have an English language deficit, teachers need to focus a large portion of their time on Reading, Writing, and English Language Development (ELD). Currently, much of a student's academic progress is monitored and evaluated by standardized tests. All teachers try to prepare their students as best they can.

    Meet Dr. Richard Reina
Dr. Richard Reina was one of the biologists on site at Las Baulas National Park. In the fall 1998, students interviewed Dr. Richard Reina, the biologist studying sea turtles at Las Baulas National Park in Costa Rica. In this interview, Dr. Reina discusses his efforts to help save the leatherback sea turtle. Here are his answers to students' questions. Question: How many leatherbacks are there?
Reina: We believe that the population of leatherbacks in the national parks in which we work is a couple of thousand. And around the world, well, it's difficult to estimate the population, but it's probably less than 100 thousand. Question: How many turtles do you see every night?
Reina: At this time of year, we are seeing between 7 and 14 turtles per night. This is close to the peak part of the season. We see them on the beach laying eggs. Question: Are you optimistic about the growth of the sea turtle population?
Reina: I'm optimistic, provided we can resolve problems that are currently occurring. I think that leatherbacks can recover if we take effective action, particularly the problems of turtles getting caught by fishing boats.

Information about tsunamis that may SAVE YOUR LIFE The following material is excerpted from Tsunami! The Great Waves In general, if you think a tsunami may be coming, the ground shakes under your feet or you hear there is a warning, tell your relatives and friends, and move quickly to higher ground.
To learn more about how you can protect yourself from tsunamis, review the following sections:
Important Facts to Know about Tsunamis
    • Tsunamis that strike coastal locations in the Pacific Ocean Basin are most always caused by earthquakes. These earthquakes might occur far away or near where you live.
    • Some tsunamis can be very large. In coastal areas their height can be as great as 30 feet or more (100 feet in extreme cases), and they can move inland several hundred feet.
    • All low-lying coastal areas can be struck by tsunamis.
    • A tsunami consists of a series of waves. Often the first wave may not be the largest. The danger from a tsunami can last for several hours after the arrival of the first wave.
    • Tsunamis can move faster than a person can run.

The Ocean Life Institute (OLI) has identified 3 Themes to broadly guide its activities for the next 2 to 3 years. There are areas of interconnection among these themes, and research in any one could support goals of another.
    • Biodiversity in the Ocean encompasses discovery and characterization of genomes and species, as well as research on their origins, relationships, ecological functions and interactions with their physical/chemical environment. The Health of Marine Ecosystems includes identification of indicators or proxies for ecosystem health and sustainability, and new theoretical and analytical methods to assess them. The regional focus for this theme is the New England coastal waters, including the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank. New Tools for Ocean Biology is the Technology theme, which aims to further the development of new sensors, instruments and investigative techniques for biological properties and processes, both in the laboratory and field.

  • Let's use the links that I have sent to explore our animal
    • How big is it? How fast is it? What does it eat? How does it get it's food? How does it defend itself? How does it treat it's young? Are the actions of humans harming this animal? What can we do to help?
We'll then have to each draw a picture of our animal in action.
