Objectivism: Assorted Commentary Rand’s philosophy, Objectivism, purports to offer at least the outlines of a complete philosophical system. In my view, its importance is more social and cultural than philosophical. However, I have been interested in it for its philosophical content and, over the last several years, have written a number of pieces, usually for one Objectivist forum or another, on the ideas and arguments Rand and those influenced by her have presented. Here is a selection (some may be of interest even without reference to Objectivism): An Inconsistent Triad Confusions About Sacrifice Defining Self-Interest Deriving 'Existence Exists' ... True, False, Arbitrary: ARIanese vs. English – This is directed at one of the characteristic positions of the most cultish of Objectivist groups – those associated with the Ayn Rand Institute. Objectivism Objectivism is an ethical theory invented by philosopher and novelist Ayn Rand.
The basic principles of objectivism are that human beings ought to be "selfish," to look out for their own well-being and interests before the well-being and interests of others. This freedom to seek one's own interest is tempered by an obligation not to prevent other people from doing the same - slavery or violence against other people are unethical and unacceptable means of seeking one's own benefit.
Hand in hand with this ethic is a belief in the economic system of laissez-faire capitalism, in a society structured so that people compete against one another for profit.
Objectivism values reason, competence, self-sufficiency, integrity, and self-respect as some of the key virtues that should characterize a human being.
For objectivists, to be selfless and altruistic is to lack self-respect, to consider other human beings more worthy of life and happiness than oneself. This is inherently unhealthy and unnatural. Objectivists claim that the ideal of altruism denies the inherent worth of an individual human being - it makes a human being something that can be sacrificed for the good of society.

What Art Is : The Esthetic Theory of Ayn Rand by Louise Torres Michelle Marder Kamhi Cultural icon Ayn Rand (1905-1982) was known as much for her philosophy as for her fiction. Her original theory of esthetics, which attacks many "masterpieces" of modernist art, is as combative and controversial as any of her work, but until now has received little serious scrutiny. In What Art Is , the authors demonstrate that Rand's ideas are supported by evidence from other academic fields. What is art? The arts establishment has a simple answer: anything is art if a reputed artist or expert says it is. Though many people are skeptical about the alleged new art forms that have proliferated since the early twentieth century, today's critics claim that all such work, however incomprehensible, is art. A groundbreaking alternative to this view is provided by philosopher-novelist Ayn Rand (1905 1982). Best known as the author of

Ayn Rand's Philosophy of Objectivism
by Dr. Edward Younkins
Professor of Accountancy and Business Administration at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia and author of Capitalism and Commerce
Ayn Rand (1905-1982), a best selling novelist and world-renowned philosopher, deductively developed a unique philosophical system called Objectivism which has affected many lives over the last half century. This article represents an introduction to her systematic vision by presenting her essential ideas in a logical, accessible manner. This should contribute toward the appreciation of Rand's profoundly original philosophical system.
The specific purpose of this article is to introduce, logically rearrange, and clarify through rewording the ideas scattered throughout her essays, lectures, and novels, especially Atlas Shrugged (1957), her masterwork of logic that most completely expounds her exhaustive, fully-integrated, philosophy. Written from the viewpoint of a generalist in economics, philosophy, and the social sciences, I mean to provide a background for readers who wish to study specialized aspects of Rand's philosophy in greater detail.
The Essence of Objectivism
Capitalism, the resulting economic system, is based on the recognition of individual rights, including property rights, in which all property is privately owned.

The Essence of Objectivism
A is A: Deriving the "Ought" from the "Is"

Rand's defense of the above positions begins with the premise that existence exists – A is A. Her philosophy, Objectivism, contends that the universe has existed eternally and repudiates the idea of its creation by a rational, omnipotent God.

Objectivism in Philosophy and Teaching Methodology
The following article has the aim to deal more practically with what constructivism criticizes. In this context, terms such as objectivistic and objectivism are often heard.
The Philosophy of Objectivism
The only thing that the philosophies of objectivism and constructivism have in common is the conviction that there is a reality apart from the individual. Yet, they offer incompatible answers to the question of epistemology on the human capacity for understanding.
Variations of objectivism are, for example, the symbol-theoretical copy theory, naive realism and the Philosophy of Common Sense. They are all based on the existence of an objective reality that is to be perceived - and not, as constructivists claim, created.
The Russian-American writer and philosopher Ayn Rand holds the same conviction. She seems to be the only one to call herself an objectivist. She was the founder of the Philosophy of Objectivism, which is based on fundamental statements on metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and politics. The following of her statements are useful for our purposes:
Traditional Teaching Methods and Objectivist Approaches to Didactics
From an epistemological or philosophical point of view, constructivism can be seen as a counterpart to objectivism. However, when didactics is concerned, constructivism does not only dissociate itself from the methods of knowledge transfer consciously referring to objectivism, but also from the traditional teaching method. Although frequently used as a negative example by constructivists, the traditional method cannot simply be attributed to conscious objectivistic approaches. Teaching methods may have been developed on a basis of a constructivist epistemology and employed with conviction. Nevertheless, the traditional teaching method is normally not chosen due to objectivistic conviction but simply because it is the method most common.

Special thanks to Cliff Walker for correcting this quotation!. Philosophy is how you decide what kind of future you want and need. It's also how you decide what you think about the way things are now, and about how things got that way. You have a philosophy. I have a philosophy. Almost everybody has a philosophy. Most people, in fact, have a philosophy and don't even know it. Yet a person's philosophy is the most important thing about them. You'd think people would make a lot of effort to arrive at a philosophy that works, wouldn't you. Yet most people don't seem to know philosophy from a hole in the ground. I've had people tell me this was because there's a vast conspiracy to keep everybody ignorant and functionally-stupid so they can be ruled easier. Other people have said most people are stupid, and there's nothing that can be done about that. A few people one of them's me say most people could just rise up and take control of their lives if they would just wake up and do it. Most people probably don't think they're asleep. Yet, they probably are. Pity, eh?

Ayn Rand named her philosophy Objectivism
By Peggy Goetz
The Irvine World News Ayn Rand (Ayn rhymes with "mine") named her philosophy Objectivism after people started calling themselves Randists. She said she was too conceited to allow such a use of her name.
Objectivism is based on the philosophy of Aristotle. It defines the abstract principles by which Rand thought man must think and act to live the life of a proper man.
Born Alisa Rosenbaum in Russia in 1905, Rand defined her philosophy along four philosophical paths. Her novels, including "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged," were depictions of the ideal man, according to her philosophy. Metaphysics: objective reality. "Reality, the external world, exists independent of man's consciousness, independent of any observer's knowledge, beliefs, feelings, desires and fears. This means that A is A, that facts are facts, that things are what they are and that the task of man's consciousness is to perceive reality, not create or invent it," she said.
Thus Objectivism rejects any belief in the supernatural or higher power.

Customer Reviews Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand (The Ayn Rand Library, Volume 6) A philosophical tour de force
Ayn Rand's philosophy is spread across many books, audio's, lectures and so forth. What Peikoff has done, masterfully, is integrate all of her identifications into one succinct whole, thus we have Objectivism the Philosophy of Ayn Rand. This is a fully integrated treatise on how to live by one's nature, qua man. The question to ask about any philosophy is ' "does it work in the real world?" I can only answer from my own personal experience... and the answer is a loud YES! Most books on philosophy are full of contradictions... this is perhaps the first integrated philosophy, integrated with what? Integrated with reality and mans nature as part of that reality. Thus, it is possibly the first book on philosophy that does not contradict itself... Ayn Rand still doesn't get the attention she deserves, in my personal opinion she is the greatest philosopher that ever lived.
