Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand

by Leonard Peikoff Ayn's philosophy recognizes and places the thinking mind of Man - reason, consciousness, logic - in the topmost position of importance in the life of every person. She discusses what thought is, how it relates to the things of the world around us, and establishes a clear system enabling one to create their own values and meaning. The only flaw in Ayn's approach is her assumption that thinking people will only consider their "selves" as the most important factor - and her resultant over-emphasis on "selfishness" and what critics incorrectly call "ego-gratification". This is a minor flaw though compared to the usefulness of the rest of her philosophy. Anyone desiring to "learn how to think" should get this book. Values are important. In fact they are necessary to a successful life. Without values one travels through the course of life without a guide, without direction, and without meaning. Ayn clearly shows how every person makes their own meaning. If you read this book and applied it you would be a different and better person.

Objective reality
Reality is what it is, independent of our beliefs or desires. No two facts of reality can contradict each other- this is an important test of truth . Everything that exists has a specific identity and a specific nature that determines how it acts. Nature is to be explained in terms of nature, without reference to the supernatural
Reason
The mind apprehends reality through a process of reasoning based on sensory observation. Reasoning is the art of building from perceptions to concepts and propositions. In this way, conclusions are built up from the evidence . Reasoning, or logic , follows certain, non-arbitrary rules which must be adhered to if we wish to reach valid conclusions. These rules include non-contradictory identification and grouping by essentials. By applying the rules of logic consistently, we can achieve objectively valid knowledge about reality. (Compare:

Objectivism starts at the beginningwith reality. It is based on the fundamental principle that reality is ob jective, not
    sub
jective, that the things man experiences are real, that his mind can learn about the world, can grasp what's real, only by using his reasoning mind. Thus Objectivism opposes faith, religion and every form of mysticism.
Ethically, Objectivism differs from most other philosophic systems because it holds that each individual has a moral right to exist for his or her own sake, and opposes any notion that morality consists of selfless service, whether to a neighbor down the street or to a spirit in the sky.

Updated: January 29, 2004 05:43 PM ET " To know one's own desires, their meaning and their costs requires the highest human virtue: rationality ." - Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982) What is Objectivism? The two main themes of the philosophy of Objectivism is the belief in individualism over collectivism, and selfishness over altruism.
Below is an outline of the philosophy:
    - Reality exists independent of man's consciousness. It is an objective absolute.
    - A is A (facts are facts - "man's consciousness is to pervceive reality, not to create or invent it." [1]
    - Through reason man can know the facts of reality.
    - There is a focus on free-will.
    - Reason is man's only means of knowledge and his basic needs of survival. Man is a rational being.
    - "Reason is man's only proper judge of values and his only proper guide to action." [2]
    - "Man...is an end in himself, not a means to the ends of others; he must live for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself." [3]

We are not speaking now of the essential difference between modern life and the life of ancient times, which is obviously enormous. We are looking only at one very specific factor in which the two sets of circumstances differ. Ancient Greek thinking circa 5th century BC In Greece it was philosophy that invented knowledge as a form of precise thinking which compels men to see that things must be as they are, and not otherwise. It discovered necessary thought. In so doing it was fully aware of the radical difference between its own way of thinking and others existing around it. What other forms of mental attitude toward Reality were in sight? Religion, mythology, poetry, and the Orphic "theologies." In all these "disciplines," thinking consists of thinking plausible things, which perhaps are, which would appear to be; but not dependent on our recognition of them, but which, once comprehended, impose themselves inescapably on our minds. This first-born philosophy regarded all those other intellectual attitudes toward the world with utter disdain. Philosophy as thinking in terms of necessity was the knowledge, was

Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand
    What is Objectivism?
The greatest philosopher of the 20th century, and perhaps of all western civilization since Aristotle, was Ayn Rand (1905-1982). Beginning as a novelist, she wrote the classics The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged . In the course of writing these, she honed and developed her personal philosophy, which found its strongest expression in the lengthy speech by John Galt in Atlas Shrugged . Following the publication of Atlas Shrugged , which Rand regarded as her magnum opus, she turned to non-fiction and wrote volumes of essays further defining her philosophy, which she named: Objectivism When asked once to define Objectivism "on one foot," Rand responded:
    • Metaphysics: Existence exists
    • Epistemology: Reason
    • Ethics: Egoism
    • Politics: Capitalism
    • Aesthetics: Romantic Realism
This is a very brief and very unauthoritative (but fairly user-friendly) explanation of what she meant:
    Metaphysics: Existence exists
Metaphysics is simply the branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of reality. Existence exists means that things are what they are, and not what we might wish them to be. We can change things, but only within objective rules. "Nature, in order to be ruled, must be obeyed." Existence exists seems simplistic, but you'd be amazed at the number of people who don't accept it. From extreme examples, such as loony-toon philosophers who claim that there is no reality, only our perceptions, to the more prosaic example of people who want to increase government funded projects, while at the same time demanding lower taxes.

Ayn Rands philosophy is spread across many books, audios, lectures and so forth. What Peikoff has done, masterfully, is integrate all of her identifications into one succinct whole, thus we have Objectivism the Philosophy of Ayn Rand. This is a fully integrated treatise on how to live by ones nature, qua man. The question to ask about any philosophy is "does it work in the real world?" I can only answer from my own personal experience... and the answer is a loud YES!

Objectivism (capitalized) is the name chosen by Ayn Rand for her philosophy. She described Objectivism as a philosophy for living on earth, which is to mean, a philosophy grounded in reality with the purpose of enabling its adherents to better deal with the natural world, as perceived by objectivist theory. Like Aristotle, Rand centered her philosophy mainly on practical questions. Objectivism rejects the existence of the supernatural. Objectivism also holds in high regard the individual human person, to the point of exalting the "virtue of selfishness". Inhaltsverzeichnis 1 Objectivist tenets

Utdrag fra 'vaskeseddelen': Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand is based on a lecture course given by Leonard Peikoff in 1976, entitled "The Philosophy of Objectivism." The lectures were attended by Ayn Rand, who helped prepare them and also joined Peikoff in answering questions. Ayn Rand said of these lectures: "Until or unless I write a comprehensive treatise on my philosophy, Dr. Peikoff's course is the only authorized presentation of the entire theoretical structure of Objectivism that is, the only one that I know of my own knowledge to be fully accurate."
