Short essay by Erlang programmer critiques objectoriented programming from the perspective of functional programming, mostly.
http://www.bluetail.com/~joe/vol1/v1_oo.html
Why OO Sucks When I was first introduced to the idea of OOP I was skeptical but didn't know why - it just felt "wrong". After its introduction OOP became very popular (I will explain why later) and criticising OOP was rather like "swearing in church". OOness became something that every respectable language just had to have. As Erlang became popular we were often asked "Is Erlang OO" - well, of course the true answer was "No of course not" - but we didn't to say this out loud - so we invented a serious of ingenious ways of answering the question that were designed to give the impression that Erlang was (sort of) OO (If you waved your hands a lot) but not really (If you listened to what we actually said, and read the small print carefully At this point I am reminded of the keynote speech of the then boss of IBM in France who addressed the audience at the 7th IEEE Logic programming conference in Paris. IBM prolog had added a lot of OO extensions, when asked why he replied: Our customers wanted OO prolog so we made OO prolog I remember thinking "how simple, no qualms of conscience, no soul-searching, no asking "Is this the right thing to do" ...

To move forward to the next generation of artificial intelligence programs, new languages will have to be developed that meet the demanding requirements of these applications. Artificial intelligence software will require unprecedented flexibility, including the ability to support multiple representations of objects, and the ability to incrementally and transparently replace objects with new, upward-compatible versions. As advances in computer architecture and changing economics make feasible machines with large-scale parallelism, artificial intelligence will require new ways of thinking about computation that can exploit parallelism effectively. futures create concurrency, by dynamically allocating processing resources. Serializers restrict concurrency by constraining the order in which events take place, and have changeable local state. The actor philosophy is illustrated by a description of our prototype actor interpreter Act 1.
  • Actors meet the requirements for organizing programs as societies
  • What capabilities are needed in a computational model to construct models of intelligent processes as a society of cooperating individuals?

    The Object-Oriented Page
by Ricardo Devis Last updated: June 20, 1997 Because OO info is increasingly populating the web and several excellent OO search engines and compilation pages have recently appeared, I feel today is more necessary than ever to offer an accurate set of commented links representing the core of every OO segment (languages, methods, etc.) from a critic point of view. So I decided to reexamine by hand all the links in this page, modify the comments, delete some entries, add several new links and revise the page structure. Because this is hard work (I have to read several hundred of web pages!) I'll be incorporating the changes during 1997 in order to get the new OOPage at August-97 (yes, I've changed dates again, but I'm not finding how can I add more hours to a single day), but I'll post the intermediate results. Of course your help (about new links or extinct ones) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading this page.
You will find here a lot of links to object-oriented info, as well as comments on object-oriented books, products, object databases, articles, etc. If looking for FAQs or any kind of usenet info not cited in this page, you should try the Usenet Searching Tools list. The index follows:

When classes were introduced to the code base of what was to become PHP 3.0, they were added as syntactic sugar for accessing collections. PHP already had the notion of associative array collections, and the new classes were nothing but a neat new way of accessing them. However, as time has proven, this new syntax proved to have a much more far-reaching effect on PHP than was originally intended.
Another thing that most people don't know is that by the time PHP 3.0 was officially released in mid 1998, it was gaining momentum at a staggering rate (see

I am a hacker in the early 80s sense of the word: a guy who goes as deep as possible into the mysteries of computing. Not happy with the ways things are, I created the Merlin Project in 1984 inspired by the work of the Smalltalk group at the Xerox Palo Alto Research center. Neat developments like Linux, the Mac and Windows have brought information technology to the 70s level. Isn't it time we moved on beyond that? I got a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Escola Politecnica of the University of Sao Paulo in 1990, with a specialization in "Microelectronics" (integrated circuit design). Interests include object oriented programming, distributed operating systems, computer graphics, IC design, kart racing and scuba diving.

Examples are drawn from several different languages, including (among others) C++, C#, Java, CLOS, Delphi, Eiffel, Objective-C and Smalltalk. By examining many languages, the reader is better able to appreciate the general principles that lie beyond the syntax of the individual languages. Pearson Education Legal Notice Permissions

Spreading the OO Fun (Series Introduction) By Jason Steffler
    Abstract
When I wrote the first Making Smalltalk with the Penguin article back in March of 2000 [LL] , my target audience was experienced programmers who didn't have much exposure to OO
The target audience for this series are people new to OO or new to programming altogether. The intent is to not only introduce OO programming, but to also spread the fun of Smalltalking. Why do this format/effort when there's lots of good tutorials out there ? Two reasons really: 1) Tutorials are great, but can be static and dated pretty quickly. 2) An ongoing series tends to be more engaging and digestible.
To help address the second reason above, my intent is to keep the articles concise so they can be digested in under an hour . Hopefully, as newbies follow along, they can refer back to the original article and make more sense of it. I plan on having a touch of advanced stuff once in a while to add flavour and as before, the articles are going to be written for read-along or code-along people.
Something new I'm going to try is to make the ongoing series viewable in a contiguous fashion and downloadable in one chunk for people who want to browse the series locally. To do this, click on TOC grapic to right. The articles are going to have 2 sets of links: one set for www links, another set for local links, indicated as:
