Study Shows Depth of Obesity Stigma
Associated Press : " While it is no surprise that people often have a low opinion of the overweight, a new study finds that just standing next to a large person can be bad for one's image. The experiment, conducted in England, demonstrates the depths of stigmatization endured by heavy people: It even rubs off on their friends." Link from Susan of Says Me

AP : "Taxpayers foot the doctor's bill for more than half of obesity-related medical costs, which reached a total of $75 billion in 2003, according to a new study. The public pays about $39 billion a year - or about $175 per person - for obesity through Medicare and Medicaid programs, which cover sicknesses caused by obesity including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, several types of cancer and gallbladder disease." via DB's Medical Rants

Beyond Dieting "Your alternative to weight preoccupation"
For the vast majority of people, diets simply do not work over the long term. Beyond Dieting® explores this issue. For a comprehensive scientific review of this area the NIH 1992 Paper on Voluntary Weight Loss is clearly the current definitive reference. If you are a person who has struggled with dieting and weight control, Beyond Dieting® may help you in making peace with food and the bathroom scale. Beyond Dieting ® focuses on the experience of repeat dieting and resultant weight preoccupation. Increased awareness and discussion will help individuals come to terms with their own dieting issues. This is NOT a diet or weight loss program! Healthy lifestyle choices are discussed and encouraged.

    Causes
Obesity is the result of an imbalance between food eaten and energy expended, but the underlying cause usually is quite complex and difficult to diagnose and treat. Those who are obese are more likely to experience kidney trouble , heart disease, diabetes high blood pressure , complications of pregnancy, and psychological problems. Liver damage is also common in overweight people. Some of the causes of obesity are glandular malfunctions, malnutrition, emotional tension, boredom, habit, and love of food. Obesity has been linked to food sensitivity or food allergy. Changing your eating habits is important in loosing weight. When there is an inadequate intake of all the essential nutrients, fat is not easily or adequately burned.

New variations on stomach stapling
November 17, 1999 Web posted at: 11:23 a.m. EST (1623 GMT) From Medical Correspondent Linda Ciampa (CNN) It used to be called stomach stapling, but today there are several variations on the gastric bypass. Doctors have improved this surgery for the obese dramatically over the past few years. But it is not without risks. Since the late 1970s, Los Angeles Dr. Mathias Fobi has operated on more than 6,000 obese patients who were not successful with diet or exercise and whose excess weight put them at high risk for heart disease, diabetes and stroke. In recent years, many performers have had the procedure, including Roseanne Barr and Jo Marie Payton, who played Harriette Winslow on the TV series "Family Matters."

Poverty and obesity
Coverage of obesity in the British press has doubled in the past year and threatens to become an 'epidemic' in its own right. It is almost impossible to pick up a daily or Sunday paper without being exposed to headlines featuring words such as 'time-bomb' and ill-founded assertions that the present generation of children will die before their parents. The sounds of wringing hands and admonishments to eat 'properly' have become almost deafening. Food Standards Agency , for example, has announced a plan to 'overhaul food promotion to children' despite the fact that in its own evidence just 2 months ago to the Commons Select Health Committee regarding advertising of food to children it conceded that: "The conclusions that the researchers drew was that the evidence is not there to draw any conclusions on the magnitude of the effect." In what we take to be proper science-based approaches, if the magnitude of an effect cannot be measured then it cannot be said to exist at all. Rational and evidence-based thinking clearly no longer stands in the way of appeasing the growing clamour for action on obesity, even when there is no evidence that the proposed measures will have the slightest impact. The 'let's be seen to be something, no matter how misguided' philosophy has long been a familiar response of agencies that have run out of proper ideas. Amidst this disoriented casting around for culprits and simple solutions, driven hard by media hype, it was refreshing to read in the

Gaining 5 pounds can greatly affect daily life
December 7, 1999 Web posted at: 5:50 p.m. EST (2250 GMT) (CNN) It has long been known that obesity can lead to a wide range of physical ailments. But a new study has shown that a weight gain of as little as five pounds can have immediate effects on routine aspects of daily life. After studying 40,000 female nurses, age 46 to 71, for four years, researchers have determined that those who gained from five to 20 pounds had great difficulty doing things most take for granted like getting dressed or taking a bath. The study included both normal-weight and overweight women. MESSAGE BOARD Diet and Fitness VIDEO CNN's Linda Ciampa reports on the problems a few pounds can cause.

Advice on low-fat diets for obesity (Cochrane Review)
Pirozzo S, Summerbell C, Cameron C, Glasziou P ABSTRACT Order full review View and/or submit comments What's new in this issue Search abstracts ... Browse by Review Group A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 25 February 2002. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Overweight and obesity are global health problems contributing to an ever increasing noncommunicable disease burden. Calorie restriction can achieve short-term weight loss but the weight loss has not been shown to be sustainable in the long-term. An alternative approach to calorie restriction is to lower the fat content of the diet. However, the long-term effects of fat-restricted diets on weight loss have not been established. Objectives: To assess the effects of advice on low-fat diets as a means of achieving sustained weight loss, using all available randomised clinical trials. This review focused primarily on participants who were overweight or clinically obese and were dieting for the purpose of weight reduction. Since we were particularly interested in the ability of participants to sustain weight loss over a longer period of time, we focused on studies of 'free living' men and women who were given dietary advice rather than provision of food or money to purchase food. Search strategy: We searched the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (Cochrane Library Issue 2, 2001), MEDLINE (up to February 2002), and EMBASE (up to February 2002). We also searched the Science Citation Index (up to January 2001) and bibliographies of studies identified. Date of latest search: February 2002.

The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) presents this position statement on the use of diet to prevent and control obesity, insulin resistance, and type II diabetes. ACPM recognizes that factors other than diet, including but not limited to physical activity, genetics, environmental exposures, and public policies influence these conditions. This statement is limited to consideration of dietary pattern, specifically in response to the promotion and popularity of unconventional dietary regimens for weight control. The College position is intended to lend guidance and clarity to practitioners and the public alike. The position espoused is subject to change as new scientific evidence accrues.

Rebirth of CARA
The Get Outdoors Act and its Senate companion, the American Outdoors Act from Sens. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Lamar Alexander (R-TN) are a reincarnation of CARA, cleverly packaged as a public health measure to fight obesity.
Get Outdoors Act Increases Spending
The federal government spent more than 2.3 trillion dollars last year, and yet Congress continues to spend more. Each of the last three budgets has increased spending by more than 7 percent, a rate almost four times inflation. The Get Outdoors Act would compound the problem by adding $3.125 billion every year to the federal budget.
Get Outdoors Act Creates a New Mandatory Program
More troublingly, the Get Outdoors Act would create a new mandatory spending program. Mandatory spending programs run on autopilot and are not annually appropriated or reviewed in the congressional budgeting process. In this manner, Congress has already declared 60 percent of the federal budget off-limits to prioritization, and the proportion of spending subject to annual appropriation shrinks every year.Compounding the problem is the fact that over the last 40 years mandatory spending has increased six times faster than discretionary spending (see

Obesity
Over one-half of all Americans (about 97 million) are overweight or obese. If you are overweight or obese, carrying this extra weight puts you at risk for developing many diseases, especially heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Losing this weight helps to prevent and control these diseases. Obesity is a condition of excess body fat. It is the most common form of malnutrition in the Western world. It is important to note that no "diet or weight loss formula" works independently of an eating plan based on the Dietary Guidelines given by the mainstream nutrition and health institutes. So if you are obese throw away all those "special formulas", supplements, and pills, stop eating more calories than you need, become more physically active and adopt a healthy eating plan. Severe overweight increases the risk for high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes and, hence, for diseases for which these conditions are risk factors (diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, neurologic disorders, cancers, and kidney diseases). Obesity thus contributes to premature mortality. Of all obesity-related diseases, noninsulin dependent diabetes is most clearly and strongly associated with obesity. Obesity is associated with too many adipose cells (hyperplastic obesity), adipose cells that are too large (hypertrophic obesity), or both. While changes in the size of adipose cells may occur at any age, the number of adult cells are fixed and determined by weight gain during certain periods of childhood development; fat cell numbers are established by late adolescence and, once established, does not decline.

Osteoarthritis, the most common form, develops as cartilage that cushions the joints wears away, leaving the ends of the bones rubbing against each other. The Arthritis Foundation says X-rays can find signs of osteoarthritis in most people over 60. The condition commonly begins to show up between ages 40 and 60, so most boomers are "right smack in the target," said Bill Roberts, an associate professor of family medicine at the University of Minnesota and president-elect of the American College of Sports Medicine. Extra weight on the cartilage brings extra risk of the joint disease. "The simple explanation is, you're putting more biomechanical stress on the joints," said Kevin Fontaine, an assistant professor of rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
