Study finds first evidence of long-term success in a weight loss program
TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) An unusually disciplined, long-term weight loss program helped participants following it lose nearly one-fifth their original weight and keep it off five years, researchers found. The Trevose Behavior Modification Program, serving about 1,200 people in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida, is the first weight loss program in the country proven to work long term, according to researchers at Rutgers University and University of Pennsylvania. Their study appears in July's International Journal of Obesity.

But just how many years will the fat take from you? A new study shows for the first time how much life expectancy is shortened for those who are overweight or obese at 40. For smokers, the statistics are even worse. "If you're overweight, you basically live three years less ... and if you're obese, you live approximately six to seven years less," says Dr. Robert Eckel with the American Heart Association.

Obesity drugs alone won't do it
By Christy Oglesby CNN ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) The pitch is all in the verbs: Absorb. Block. Burn. Metabolize. The names and promises of obesity drugs make it sound as if the pills will do all the work consuming, searing and routing fat right out of a body. Hardly. "I know of no drugs that absorb fat. It would be nice to say there's this drug that's a sponge that will suck it up, but it won't," said Dr. Arthur Frank, medical director of the weight management program at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. And the obesity drugs that do increase metabolism or block the absorption of fat also require work and diet modification. None of the obesity drugs on the market is particularly potent, experts said. And they won't work without a decrease in food and fat consumption coupled with an increase in physical activity. VIDEO Some have been let down by new diet drugs. Why Is Obesity A Growing Problem in America?
Joslin Diabetes Center's New Obesity Section Head Sheds Light on Expanding Problem
[Boston, MA, August 2001] — The statistics have been reported in all the major news magazines, on the nightly news and in newspapers from coast to coast. Overall, adult men and women are about 8 pounds heavier, on average, than they were 15 years ago. According to the National Institutes of Health, over 100 million Americans — or about 60 percent of the adult population — are overweight. As many as a third are considered "obese," a term that in general is applied when a person is 20 percent or more above their ideal body weight. According to Joslin Diabetes Center's new chief of the Section on Obesity, Eleftheria (Terry) Maratos-Flier, M.D., there is much for scientists to learn about the underlying role of genetics and environment in obesity and other factors to explain why we as a nation are gaining so much weight now. "In the last five years there have been tremendous changes in how scientists view obesity. The long held view that obesity is caused simply by overeating and weak willpower has begun to change as we have learned about other factors that control weight," says Dr. Maratos-Flier. "We now understand more about the role of the brain, in particular the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that seems to regulate in part how much we eat."

Latest data shows rapid rise in obesity
Story Tools (AP) Some facts and figures about obesity in the United States from the recent health studies: The number of obese adults is soaring, up to nearly 59 million people, or almost a third of all adults and doubling over the past two decades. Fifteen percent of youths ages 6 to 19 were seriously overweight, the term experts use as a rough equivalent to obesity in children. That is nearly 9 million youths and triple the number in a similar assessment from 1980. Obesity can sharply reduce life expectancy. Studies released this year showed that being obese at age 20 can take 20 years off a person's life; being obese at age 40 can reduce life expectancy by seven years. The percentage of extremely obese people at least 100 pounds overweight is growing even faster, one study found. From the 1980s to 2000, extremely obese adults quadrupled to about 4 million, or about 1 in every 50 adults. Medical care for the obese averaged $732 per year more per person than for people of normal weight, one study found. Nationwide, that would mean $92.6 billion more in 2002, with half the cost picked up by government-funded Medicare and Medicaid programs.

The shape of a healthy diet (CNN) Jose Jimenez used to weigh 350 pounds. Then last year, at the age of 16, he turned to a drastic measure to lose weight bariatric surgery, or what is sometimes known as stomach stapling. "I wanted something that would work for me and I knew that the surgery would do that," Jose said. With childhood obesity rates soaring, some teenagers are turning to the once adult-only surgery, a procedure that closes off parts of the stomach and, sometimes, intestines. This restricts the amount of food a person can eat and creates a fuller feeling with a much smaller portion. In the seven months after his surgery, Jose lost 100 pounds and says he is still dropping weight.

New research shows a reduced-glycemic-load diet that emphasizes foods with a low to moderate glycemic index and allows children to eat until they're full was more effective than a traditional low-fat, calorie-restricted diet in helping obese children shed pounds and slow the progression of insulin resistance, a risk factor for diabetes. Foods with a high glycemic index include simple carbohydrates, such as white bread, white rice, sweet cereals, and sugary foods. Researchers say these foods cause blood sugar levels to surge after eating, which places additional stress on the cells in the pancreas that produce the insulin needed to process sugar in the body.

The government soon may try to change that by requiring or encouraging restaurants to display calories on their menus alongside the salads, entrees and desserts. The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that labeling menus is among several proposals it is considering to help people watch what they eat. Food companies already are required to put nutrition information on the backs of food packages, and nutrition advocates have been pressuring the government and the industry to impose similar requirements on the restaurant industry.
